Curran: Tom Brady didn’t know about missing NFL logo on helmet

Getty Images

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady played two preseason games without an NFL logo on his helmet, a subtle two-word, seven-letter message to the league that has suspended him four games. But the potency of the message is diluted by the twist applied to the tale by Tom Curran of CSN New England.

Appearing on Monday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Curran said that, as Curran understand it, Brady would say he didn’t know the logo was missing.

Absent eyewitness testimony from someone who saw Brady remove the sticker or an electronic paper trail (from, you know, Brady’s cellphone) that proves he knew about it and/or did it, there’s no way to disprove the claim that he didn’t know the logo was missing. But does anyone really believe that the absence of the logo was accidental?

Every NFL helmet displays the league’s logo sticker. Every one. If proof emerges that, from time to time, the logo sticker simply isn’t there, Brady’s claim becomes plausible, although the absence of the logo sticker from his own helmet would be at best a very convenient coincidence.

Then again, why wouldn’t Brady just admit that he deliberately removed the logo or directed someone to do it? Maybe he didn’t want to get in trouble again with the league office. Maybe he thinks it’s beneath him to care about such trivialities. Or maybe he was trying to make an ironic point regarding the ability of the team’s equipment staff to do (or fail to do) something without him knowing it.

As Gantt pointed out this morning, maybe the Patriots also have a helmet guy who calls himself the “Peeler” because he likes oranges.

Regardless, with Brady now out of pocket for four weeks, it’s highly unlikely that the issue will still matter by the time he returns — unless during a Week Five visit to Cleveland his helmet once again lacks the NFL logo.

  1. Lies again… Surprise surprise. That’s so out of character.

This would only have meant something if he owned up to it and took the heat for it. But, not surprised he turned around and ran the other way and lied when it came back to him. Weak.

  2. Of all the players in the league, Brady is the only one who didn’t have the sticker on his helmet, and was unaware of it?

    Yeah, right.

  3. Through obvious, incessant, bald faced, lying Brady and the entire Patriots organization have given up any right to the benefit of the doubt.

That’s just the way it is.

  4. He was generally aware there are NFL stickers on helmets. He’ll get docked more games, possible the rest of the season as a repeat offender of the rules.

  5. ….or maybe it’s because Brady’s mantra is “deny ’till you die,” just like in Deflategate, even when all the evidence is to the contrary….

  6. This man can’t admit to anything, or lie well. I wonder if he left scissor marks. Sheesh, he could have just said that the edge had peeled a bit, so he took it off until the equipment people got him a new one. I dunnno is what my 8yro grand kid says. Man up…Nancy boy!!

  7. Tom Brady is doing an amazing job of making Colin Kapernick more like able than himself. What a baby. Drop it dude, you got in trouble after years of having the league get your back. It took them a decade to get rid of the tuck rule, created a rule about QBs legs after yours were taken out and now because you were naughty, you pout like a child. Your mannish wife has bigger ones than you.

  8. there’s no denying that he’s a great qb.

but this guy is such a closet case man lover that his whole life has become a lie. everything that comes out of his mouth will be questioned forever, that’s just the price you pay for living a lie.

  9. I am a huge Brady fan and believe he’s upset at the league and did this. In fact, the cut to his right hand which kept him out of the second preseason game probably was with the scissors he mentioned but it was removing the NFL decal.

  10. I hope Brady puts the sticker back with the logo on upside down or with a ghostbusters style line through it 🙂

  11. I do not believe the scissors had anything to do with it.

Why? Because there are pictures online showing a logo-less Brady helmet all the way back to OTA’s in May.

    Sure he does 🙂

He owns up to wrecking the Legion of Bums all by himself in the Super Bowl 🙂 Greatest 4th are comeback in Super Bowl history and the 2012’s have to live with it.

    🙂

  13. He has more equipment malfunctions than the superbowl halftime show and he knows nothing about it. Maybe he should get a super sized one for the return game vs Browns.

Or maybe left shark did it.

  14. Shady Brady is at it again. Just wow.

Pretty clear by now that his next career will be in politics. He’s already learning all the tricks and will do spectacularly.

  15. @pastabelly

That was not only funny, but for once most Patriots fans see it for what it is . He did remove the decal, it is really no big deal, but if you are taking a stand…have the “character” to go along with your conviction and admit it. I hate what Kaepernick did, but I respect his right to do it.

Cant say I blame him there. Also think it’s funny he claims he didnt know. Only question now is if the clown shoe outfit we call the NFL is going to investigate this one

Might be time to take a hard look at your life when you find yourself getting this excited about a sticker.

    A sticker.

  19. The NFL front office has also made it against league rules for players to remove tags from their pillows. Because that indicates a defiant attitude and directly affects the integrity of the game.

  20. Reading the above comments, despite my humility, as a Patriot fan it’s impossible not to feel intellectually superior to fans of the other 31 NFL teams

Peyton Manning admits he had HGH delivered to his house – but it was for his pregnant wife who apparently was engaged in some genetic experiments with their unborn twins – and these fans take that hook line and sinker

Meanwhile scientists confirm that the NFL’s PSI readings are consistent with what the Laws of Physics say they should be – i.e. (that means – “that is”) the footballs were never deflated.

Yet fans believe Goodell who openly lied to them for 6 months that “11 of 12 footballs were deflated”

Whether Brady or his equipment guys took the decal off, they’re all justified in protesting a corrupt NFL

The real problem with this sport is that that most fans ACTUALLY think “Brady is such a cheat, he breaks the Laws of Physics”

The proof of that is in the above comments – and nothing can change the collective low IQ of most jealous football fans

  21. Helmet condition and all applicable stickers is the teams responsibility not to he players. He just wore what was provided for him. Don’t thin the NFL will mess with slapping them with an equipment violation and Brady knows that

Enlightened take from a Steelers fan right there folks.

  24. The helmet stickers are not the responsibility of the players and as much as you idiots seem to think so, he doesn’t have eyes in the back of his head or the ability to see through/around to the back of his own helmet. He also has his helmet handed to him after they run on the field pre-game, after that he pays attention to where he puts it and picks it up from there. All any player would really do is check the number on the back, not examine it under a microscope.

I hear what goes around comes around

Tom is history in the NFL

    Book it

    ——————

This is one of those guys who’s been talking about why THIS is the year the Pats will fall from the top of the AFC East every fall for 10 years.

    Book it

  29. I don’t know he knew or didn’t, but I’m really hoping this was intentional. The guy doesn’t owe this league anything anymore, they should be Public Enemy No. 1 to him. As if they’ve been so transparent with him throughout this whole ordeal. NFL is an absolute joke, and I hope he mocks and disrespects the shield in every game he plays til he retires.

  30. Brady should be flipping every sucmbag owner, GM and slimeball cheating coach on the Comp. Committee and in Goodell’s pocket, the bird, double barreled, everytime he sees these people.

Their entire focus is on convincving Goodell to lie to frame and to try to distract the Pats.

The Pats are so good at wiping out natural distractions, Goodell is now enabling orchestrated disatractions from league level.

Goodell is colluding to cheat the Pats and has been since 2006.

Well documented. From rule changes, to made up scandals, to ignoring punishing other teams who actually cheat.

    Fact.

  31. Curran thinks he’s being cute applying what Brady said during deflategate to this situation. None of Brady’s people wouldn’t talk to Tom Curran about anything. Keep believing in the BS and hating.

  32. Wow, a lot of hate over a sticker! Of course Brady removed it and of course he’s gonna deny it – the very denial adds to his giving the finger to the NFL, and stops them from having easy proof that he did it (not that the NFL ever needed proof). I hope he keeps doing stuff like this and I love the salty lynch mob getting so worked up about it – a tiny sticker! LOL.

  33. Let me guess…
This gave him an unfair advantage and he will be suspended for life, and the Patriots will stripped of all their draft picks for the next decade. Haters keep hating, winners keep winning!

  34. I think Kraft did it…
    Or maybe BB….
Then again it could have bee Garoppolo….
Wish it had of been me that did it….

    Whomever it was….AWESOME JOB!!!

  35. If you look at the picture, the sticker clearly was never there in the first place. Have you ever removed a sticker from something? Unless you care enough to clean the surface afterwards with some sort of “Goo-gone” product, it is obvious there was something there before. The picture of the sticker-free helmet shows no such residue.

  42. Might be interesting to see whether league acts on this “equipment violation” in standard manner with fine.

Brady may be setting up an additional “Arbitrary and Capricious” argument against league for its decision to punish him for Deflategate “equipment violation” with non-standard suspension that it justified under a different category of rules. Maybe this foreshadows a coming Civil Motion by Team Brady before statute of limitations up on current league actions against the QB for the entire ordeal he might claim regarding Deflategate investigation, hearing, and disciplinary actions?

    Clearly Tom Brady is lying……again.

    —————

    Clearly.

The PSI data the NFL collected in 2015 and subsequently released to the public prove he lied.

    Oh wait…um…never mind.

  50. where were the uniform police they tell players about violations during pregame so if said player doesn’t want to be fined change, socks, shoes, stickers, etc.

  51. I’m a Jet fan who hates the Patriots, and I really hope Brady is just denying this because he finds it amusing. I definitely find it amusing. At this point, what does he have to lose? Might as well have a few laughs at Goodell’s expense.

  52. There may be no NFL shield on Brady’s helmet but it is in high demand as a toilet paper design for anyone that really cares about the game. Second only to Goodell’s image.

  53. As soon as the NFL publically releases the PSI information that was collected during the 2015 season the NFL should get to work on a new rule requiring that the stickers be on the helmets.

The penalty for not having the sticker should be a one dollar fine for each game that its missing.

  54. I may vehemently disagree with Colin Kaepernick’s decision to protest the national anthem.
But at least he’s got the guts to be a man about it.
He’s not hiding in the tunnel before game time, keeping it a secret or lying about it.

Which is the equivalent of what Brady is doing, again.
I used to have a lot of respect for him as a person and as a player.
But, with all of the cheating, that we know of, and the constant denials have made me lose faith in anything he says or stands for.
    Truly sad and disappointing.

  55. I know posting fact-based arguments on PFT rarely results in solidarity, but if brady turned down every opportunity to let loose on goodell/inquiry… what makes you think he cares about a sticker on his helmet? there’s nfl logos on every other piece of clothing he wears. I don’t see why he’d bother with that versus you know, say working out with his new receivers to get better.

Of course there’s a lot of people on PFT who don’t expect their team to get better this year. I don’t quite understand, but maybe if you anticipate complaining all year this is sort of training camp to get those lungs ready for 17 weeks of whining and crying. Every team not doing this loves that you’re expending the energy.

  56. Poor poor Patriot Hater. They still think their team belongs on the field with US.

    Such delusion is laughable. 🙂

  74. Hilarious. And Brady didn’t know his gf was preggers wheN he started cheating on her with Gelze. He didon’t know his wife would be mad when he fooled around with Affleck’s nanny on Affleck’s private jet. Social media pics were posted. He didn’t know his balls were under under inflated despite have a zillion texts with a ball boy named Deflator. Tom just simply doesnt know and is being framed by Roger. Totally hilarious.

  75. So, nearly 100 comments can be pretty summed up as …

Idiots: Brady lies. Throw him out of the league for good.

    NE fans: Whatever.

  76. Tee hee 🙂 Patriot Hater is so salty this topic smells like the ocean! 🙂

All the more reason to get literally right in their grill and laugh at them even more!

    🙂

  77. So haters are all worried that there was a missing sticker from a helmet for a couple of preseason games?…

    OK

  78. so many here blatantly and constantly make up their own facts(aka “lying””) but they bash/hate Brady because they assume he’s lying

    cant make this stuff up
    —————————–

I think Harry’s head “wound” was a lobotomy

  79. Brady didn’t injure himself removing the sticker before the 2nd preseason game. Paul Lukas (on the uni-watch website) posted photos which show that the sticker has been missing from Brady’s helmet for a few months, at least as far back as Patriots mini-camp in early June. If this was intended as a protest, it’s got to be one of the least effective ever. Missing all summer and nobody even noticed.

  80. Somehow Article 46 will be applied claiming a sticker somehow affects the integrity of the game. Not that anybody would be surprised at this point.

  81. My gosh TD and LyinRog(stoolP) 25% of the posts….there is having N opinion then there are psychopants….as those 2 are

That about sums up a Pats homer. Nothing better to do in boring ol NE so they have to call out everyone a hater who doesn’t say the Patriots are the best thing since penicillin.

Don’t worry, they go away once Brady and Belicheat retire. They soon discover outside.

  82. What kind of reporting is this?
As Curran “understand it” (sic), Brady “would say” he didn’t know the logo was missing.

What precisely did Curran understand or misunderstand? Did he read Tom Brady’s mind?
Tom Brady is already censured and condemned for “being generally aware” of something — that someone else — allegedly did. Now — without talking to him — individuals can state what he “would say?” Is it any wonder he destroyed his cell phone? I would, too…

  83. Tee hee 🙂 Patriot Hater demonstrates every day precisely why it’s so much fun to slap them up, down and around on this message board! 🙂

On behalf of the 4 time World Champions and the GOAT QB Tom Brady I think I’ll keep doing just that. 🙂

    Why?

    Because I CAN silly!

    🙂

Nobody said Patriot Hater was very bright 🙂

They sure are a bunch of wussies though. 🙂 From enabling their wussy team who isn’t man enough to put in the work and effort to try and beat the Patriots on the field, to complaining when they get a lot of thumbs down to their posts, to accusing Patriot Fans of padding thumbs up/down stats on these posts to their incessant saltiness on this board.

Tee hee 🙂 I know they are mad that I chime in but it’s nothing personal. It is my duty and obligation to slap them around 🙂 Just like the bully beats up the weakling just for being a weakling. That is the way it is. 🙂

  85. everyone a hater who doesn’t say the Patriots are the best thing since penicillin.

But they ARE the best thing since penicillin, hater. 🙂 Just because you don’t like facts doesn’t make them any less factual.

Actually, you could make a case that the Patriots really are the best “NFL team” since penicillin.

There are a couple teams with more titles but nobody has had the consistent and sustained level of excellence like the Patriots have had over the last 15 years.

I’d say they’re “probably” the best NFL team since penicillin and if they win another title in the next few years….BOOM…case closed…best team since penicillin!

It took them a decade to get rid of the tuck rule, created a rule about QBs legs after yours were taken out and now because you were naughty, you pout like a child. Your mannish wife has bigger ones than you.

    ——————————

The tuck rule was there before Brady played and was called correctly for and against the patriots during the 2001 season. The rule on hitting the QB was actually was created and called “the carson palmer rule” after he got injured. Looks like you’re the one who sounds like a child.

That may look like the sun out there but I actually think it is actually the glow from those 4 RADIANT GLEAMIMG BEAMING SHINY LUMINOUS SPARKLING SPECTACULAR Lombardi trophies all the way from Foxboro Mass!

    🙂

  97. Brady should take full responsibility for defaming the flag. If he wants to make a statement, sit during the national anthem to protest his unfair treatment by the league rather than take a weasel way out. At least he’s consistent.

“Defaming the flag?” Do you mean “desecrating” the flag?

BTW – you know the sticker wasn’t the US flag right? It was the NFL logo. Nobody “pledges allegiance” to it or anything.

What if this was done on purpose but Brady truly did not know any thing about it? Isn’t possible that Brady was perhaps being set up?

Thank you for finally and accurately summing up Framegate (aka Deflategte).

I’ve always had an open door for the notion that JJ and/or JM went rogue, but there’s no real proof of any of it.

I find it interesting that a common thread between Brady Haters and Michael Brown supporters is that they believe beyond doubt that Brady cheated but aren’t quite sure that Brown broke any laws or tried to take a cops gun.

    Wonder why that is????

  101. Once again Tom is caught in the middle of his equipment managers blunders. If I didn’t know better I would say the equipment staff is out to get him.

Tom, one of these days you will find out more people will be behind you if you tell the truth. Nobody cares you don’t have the logo in fact some of us think it was funny/needed. But the lies just keep coming.

    Tom’s Legacy

  102. Orange and Blue, Brady’s lawyer did in fact tell Judge Berman that if the ball boys did deflate the footballs that they did it on their own to help Brady. I think Judge Berman asked the question. However, Brady was not set up and he was an active in the scheme to deflate the balls. The ball boys testiomey and texts pretty much cement this. There is no question a scheme was in place. In my opinion, there is no question Brady knew and approved of this. Brady’s biggest downfall was introducing the AEI Report, his denial of knowing JM and what his job was and JM recanting that he told NFL security that Tom personally told him to tell the ref he wanted the balls at 12.5

  103. Hey Trolls,

Make sure to tune in to see the Patriots execute another deep playoff run with TB12 this season.

    Bah,hahahahahahahaha!

    ———————–

    The tuck rule? Really?

They created the Carson Palmer rule 2 years before Brady went down for the season, yet the rule was created because of Brady?
