Jerry Jones indicates Tony Romo will stay on the active roster

The Cowboys considered placing quarterback Tony Romo on injured reserve with a broken bone in his back, which would give him the opportunity to return later in the year. They apparently have decided not to do that.

Owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that there’s no other position sufficiently valuable to justify removing Romo from the roster, via David Helman of the team’s official website.

Via multiple reports from people who don’t work for the team, Jones compared the process of deciding whether to place Romo on IR to “circumcising a mosquito.”

Here’s the added benefit of keeping Romo on the active roster: Each and every week, the Cowboys can try to create the impression that Romo is ready to come back. At some point, there will be a real question as to whether Romo will be ready, and it will cause a team to prepare for seeing Romo. Maybe, at some point, a team won’t be sufficiently ready for Dak Prescott. Maybe, at some point, a team will be completely unprepared for Romo.

Already, coach Jason Garrett has declined to rule Romo out for Week One. That will continue, week in and week out, until Romo is listed as questionable and he doesn’t appear on the list of inactive players submitted 90 minutes before kickoffs and, from the Cowboys perspective, a team hopefully faces Romo when it didn’t expect to do so.

And then he’ll get injured again five plays later.

  1. Well, by my math, it’s been almost 2 weeks of rehab. Even with the 6-10 weeks, which is the longest projection, that puts him back MAYBE in Week 4. But if you put him on Short Term IR, he’s done until week 9.

A roll of the dice to be sure, but if he’s healthy, you roll with him. If Dak is lighting it up for some reason, you have an out to keep him as QB2. But somehow I don’t see that happening. He’ll be in as soon as he says, “I’m ready” which I really don’t know if it’s that wise.

  2. It’s a bit overdone that Romo will just enter a game and SURPRISE the other team. You don’t prepare for one player, you prepare for the Cowboys. Romo needs practice time and everyone will know he is ready to play.

  3. Does anyone seriously believe that Romo is someone that opponents should fear at this point? Even if he plays, he can’t stay healthy, and he will be tentative and rusty, fearing getting hurt again.

  4. Dr. Jones strikes again. How stupid must Garrett feel for trying to convince people, with a straight face, that a man with a broken back might play this week?

There’s gamesmanship … and then there is the cowboys.

  5. LOL, Stephen actually sounded rational about Romo’s future a little while back but it’s great (for fans of the other 31 teams) to know that Jerry still has the final word. Thank you Jerry for continuing to make me laugh without ever intentionally trying to be funny.

  6. Geezus, Dr. Jones, will you not learn from past mistakes? How did rushing Romo back early work out last year? And now he’s another year older (36) with another major back injury and that same thrice broken collarbone to boot! You know he’s tougher than dirt so he’ll trot out as soon as the bubblegum sets on the Popsicle sticks holding him together but why put this added pressure on him to come back ASAP? Will you feel the slightest bit of remorse when he’s crippled for life? Yeah, he’s ultimately responsible for his own health, but you’re NOT doing him any favors putting unreasonable expectations on him given his age and injury history. But then you’d have to point the finger at the GM for failing to secure a decent veteran backup not nicknamed Buttfumble, wouldn’t you? Can’t have that!

wtf jerry, you remember he got hurt last year when you tried rushing him back
    ————
To be fair, he rushed himself back. His team had lost multiple games in a row. He said that he felt he had to go in and help them try to get a win.

The “Most mediocre franchise in sports”…

The moment I saw this, there were 8 upvotes and 8 downvotes. Absolutely perfect.

  9. Tony, you have enough cash.
Walk away while you can still walk.
A torn ACL or a broken collar bone is one thing, things breaking in your back are another.

All you should have to do is to look at former QB’s that played a long time and watch they way they walk now.

  10. Mark it down as said here first by me. When Romo retires (forced or not) with-in that first year he will sue the NFL and the Cowboys for “making” him play while injured and state that the team did not care about the severity of his injuries.

This is the biggest joke around. Romo should no play until he is healthy. If he is not healthy he should refuse to play.

  11. The Dallas Cowboys really bought in to Obama’s Hope and Faith speech. Romo and Obama both will be gone after this year. Maybe they will take Jerruh and Hillary with them

  12. Fans of every other NFC East team are chipping in to find a way to keep Jerrah alive forever.

You don’t seem to know much about Romo. He will want to play sooner than the Cowboys will want him to. He’d play right now if the Cowboys would let him. I do think the Cowboys should do more to protect him from himself, but there is no chance of a lawsuit in this situation.

  14. Huge Cowboys fan. I believe Romo will be back and playing strong again but this comment really made me LOL from firecracker87.

“Not sure what he’s talking about. It’ll take at least 9 weeks to build a wheel chair capable of scrambling out of the pocket.”.

  15. I almost feel sorry for Dallas Rump Rider fans.

While even the Little Napoleon Snyder in Washington has managed to do the right thing by hiring real football people to manage his operation, the Rump
Riders are managed by the Cybil of the NFL. This jerk wears so many hats and heads and obviously knows nothing about personnel that the rest of the NFL should hope that Jerruh Jones lives to be 150 so that the Rump Riders will never be competitive again.

Perhaps when Tony assumes room temperature you can put him in a chair and pretend it is a Weekend at Jerruh’s.

  16. I’m confused. I thought it was a back issue. Trying to put his helmet on backwards is a sure sign he’s concussed.

  17. “And then he’ll get injured again five plays later.”

Whoah, slow down. Lets not get too optimistic here.

  18. Trotting Romo out there last year after the first collar bone was a good call, why not with a broken vertebrae as well? What could go wrong?

  19. I understand the don’t rush it crowd, especially if there is a serviceable backup putting up W’s. I think I understand Romo and Jerry even a little better. Jerry thinks Romo is his best chance at a “gloryhole” and Romo doesn’t want that closing window to circumcise his mosquito.

  20. Circumcising a mosquito?

Well, it’s good to know Jones has a real hobby that doesn’t involve pretending he’s an NFL General Manager.

If the Cowboys are mediocre, what does that make the Eagles?

Cowboys need to copy the Pats again and put a giant pic of Romo in their stadium like Pats did with Brady.

    ***************************
Maybe Pats need to copy Saints again like with “Do Your Job”

  23. @bobthebillsfan

We all know the story, Parcells stole it from the Raiders, Belichick stole it from the Giants and now that the Cowboys add it anywhere and now it’s a big hate thing. It wasn’t this big of an issue when the Saints did it. SMH

  24. Aren’t there rules in place to prevent teams from saying, “The guy with the broken back might play this week”?

Isn’t that the entire point of the injury report?
