Bills fire offensive coordinator Greg Roman after two games

AP

Rex Ryan’s seat in Buffalo might not have been the hottest after all.

Two games into the season, the Bills have fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Bills are 0-2 and starting down a part of the schedule which isn’t conducive to turning things around quickly, with games against the Cardinals and Patriots on the horizon.

The Bills scored 31 of their 38 points last night against the Jets, but finished 12th in scoring offense and 13th in total yards last season.

  1. Sign your promising QB to a $92-million extension, fire his coordinator after two games. Smart.

  2. But yet the guy who consistently brings bad defense with him to whatever team he goes to stays. Is there a worse defensive coordinator than Rob Ryan?

  3. But Rob Ryan keeps his job… It’s amazing to me how these two buffoons have fooled NFL owners for so long…

  4. They scored 31 pts last night. The offense wasn’t the problem!

Guess Rex is unwilling to admit his brother is the problem. Which, in turn, makes Rex the problem. Look for both of them to hit the bricks real soon.

  5. PS sever on those pts were the Defense and 7 of them came with about 1 minute left… beyond that 7 of them came after a crazy scramble that had Taylor finding Salas on a broken play… That is 21 of the 31 having nothing to do with Roman.. tired of seeing his horizontal offense..

  6. That’s hilarious. They fired the one competent guy on their staff… This train wreck is going to be hard to take our eyes off of.

  7. Wow!! Ryan Fitzpatrick carved up that swiss cheese defense and the OC gets fired?!?!?!?!? Jets scored on 7 of 10 drives last night and Fitzpatrick looked like Drew Brees. I guess you can’t fire yourself and your brother.

  8. Well, his rushing offense has been horrendous this season and outside of 84 and 71 yard TDs the team was once again bad in the passing game.

I cant say I agree with it, but the defense has been stronger than offense so far and the defense hasnt exactly been stellar

Um, they fired the WRONG coordinator!

    Couldn’t agree more…

Offense did enough to win game last night in limited time they had. D did nothing and couldn’t get off the field on third downs all night.

  10. “The Bills scored 31 of their 38 points last night against the Jets”

Then what team scored the other 7 points for the Bills?????????????????

The Claranettes will be anxious to have him back!!!

Says the troll from the team that put up 12 points at home last week.

  12. THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH: I am not Buffalo fan, but from I observed, the first one to go was the Defensive Coordinator! His brother! Look at the score board!

  13. Ryans are inept and hire inept coaches. After watching Romans vanilla offense in SF flop, it’s no surprise. The Bills scored garbage points..

The true flops are the Ryans. How they have jobs in the NFL flabbergasts me..and Drew Brees

  14. Owner: Rex, you have to fire one of your coordinators.
Coach Tootsie: OK, I know who goes– the guy who almost pulled out the game.

  15. How do you fire you’re OC two games into the season? If you had that little confidence in his abilities how did you not replace him before the summer? If I’m ownership I would let Rex do what he wants because if things are poor come week 10 he’s gone and I give his Bro the job just to throw salt in his wounds, then clear house at the end of the yr….

He’s combining the scores from their first two games. 7 points in week 1 and 31 points in week 2.

  17. That’s the sort of BS move that will lose the players on him. You just can’t respect that.

  18. As a Jets fan I’m sad they did this.
I don’t want Rex fired, I want him to stay in Buffalo and ruin them the way he did the Jets.

Firing Roman will solidify Rex getting fired.

The Bills got a couple of nice TDs on bombs, plus other points, so they did fine.

If you watched the game, you saw Fitzpatrick making many passes to wide open Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

The Bills may improve once the clean out Rex.

  19. Of course they fired the wrong coordinator (the talk of Rob Ryan as a good DC is a joke, he was horrid with the Raiders for all those years) but guys please stop screaming “the offense scored 31 points last night” because they didn’t. 7 points came from a defensive TD, 2 TDs came from complete defensive breakdowns (2 plays combined for 160 yards, that’s just horrible D/fluke) and another came late in the game when the Jets were in prevent D.

  20. “The Bills scored 31 of their 38 points last night against the Jets”

    raider fans lol

    allow me to explain:

the Bills scored 31 points last night (against the Jets), and 7 in the previous game, totaling 38.

    need I say more?

  22. Why stop with him? Hate to say it but this team is garbage. I will never forgive Rex for what he did to our defense, which was one of the best in the league before he arrived and blew it up so that he could make it “his” defense. He’s an arrogant and loud mouthed fool who makes me feel embarrassed to be a Bills fan every time he opens his mouth.

I had high hopes after last season that an off-season of cohesion and development would allow this team to take the next step and at least begin contending for a wild card with a certain degree of reliability or maybe even challenge an aging Brady for the division but that does not appear to be the case.

Whatever. It’s the Bills. We will get a high draft pick next year, and get a boost from having our first and second picks from this year come back from injury. Hopefully Rex will be gone by that point and someone competent can start building a team out of this once promising roster that isn’t so maddening to follow. Maybe someday things will be different, but for now, it’s the same old Bills as far as I’m concerned.

  23. Ryan is on a roll. He should fire the guy that stirs the Gatorade powder into the sideline cooler because he too is responsible for the Bills giving up 37 points last night.

  24. At this rate if the Bills defense gives up 40 next week Tyrod Taylor is going get benched.

Obviously Greg Roman and Rob Ryan must have had a beef so you know who would win that one.

Rob Ryan has completely ruined 3 good defenses now. Amazing.
    ________________________________

Rob is only the assistant, not the DC. And our defense wasn’t good when he got here anyways. It was amazing in 2014 but pretty awful in 2015, meaning the honors for ruining our defense goes to Rex. Rob merely helped finish shoveling the dirt in on top of the grave.

Shouldn’t have even had to say that much.

  27. Roman deserved to be fired. The points scored last night weren’t a product of his play calling. They were fluke plays where Tyrod scrambled and made a play down field. He deserved to be fired just for calling a QB sneak on 3rd and 1 and then lining up in a heavy set on 4th and 1 against arguably the best Dline in the NFL. No creativity, multiple tight end sets with no one running down the seam a 9 million $ TE that he uses for dump offs and edge blocking.
Hopefully this is only the first domino and we fire Whaley and Rex and his fat sister.

    ————-
I’m not sure this is fair to Rob. Rex took the #4 defense and turned it into the #24 defense last year.

  29. So they fired their offensive coordinator for putting up 31 points and almost 400 yards, but not the defensive coordinator for allowing 37 points. Right…

  30. Wow, the Bills are in trouble. If you are firing an OC two games into the season, after they put up 31 points, then that just reeks of desperation.

If your team gets 31 points against a Jets defense, and yet gives up 38 points, it’s not the OC that should be getting the heat and being fired.

It’s true they’ve scored 38 points in 2 games. Their defense though, has given up 51 points in 2 games.

Well it looks like the Ryan’s will be out of work again this offseason.

Now how will their replacement OC find a way to outscore AZ in week 3?

  31. Hey Rex, it’s YOUR DEFENSE that’s the problem. This defense has regressed every year you have been there. Aren’t you a defensive guru? I guess you couldn’t blame the lack of success on Mario Williams this time.

I will say this though. I’m a Niners fan and I HATED Greg Roman when he was our offensive coordinator.

  32. This is why bad teams stay bad. Overreaction.

Despite all the Ryan jokes, the Jets and Bills are almost even in terms of overall talent and potential. But one is a neurotic train wreck and the other is just plodding ahead methodically.

Is Rex right for this team? Who knows. But mature teams build things, they don’t just tear them apart again and again and again. When you fire your OC after 2 games, it means the people who hired the OC have failed.

  33. For the remainder of this season I will be diverting the majority of my attention to my fantasy team and the Steelers, two activities that are actually fun. I will go to the game I have tickets for and watch the rest of the Bills games because it’s hard to look away from a train wreck, but man, it is getting really difficult to muster any enthusiasm for this team. Year after year of disappointment.

Football teams are just logos on the sides of helmets in the modern era where entire rosters churn every 3-5 years save for a handful of players so it’s just getting statistically unreasonable at this point for them to still be this bad. I’m a grown man and the Bills haven’t been relevant since I was a young child. Sigh. Oh well.

  34. Should have moved Rob Ryan to O Coordinator. The guy has a great track record of making offenses look great.

  35. Every time I tune into a Bills nationally televised game…..Taylor makes one big throw, a bunch that are off, and seems to get dinged up. How can you feel good about that as your future??

When did the Jets stop being a train wreck and begin plodding ahead methodically? When they fired their last idiot coach, who coincidentally is the head of the currently flailing Bills. I take your point about overreaction, but some people just aren’t cut out for the job. And when they make that painfully obvious for you in real time, you would be a fool to ignore that.

Fired for putting up 31 points vs the jets?? Talk about taken one for the team. Cold World!
    ————————————

Pay closer attention. Roman was awful in a multitude of areas, play calling among them. Greg never adjusted, he never had plays in the huddle on time and was awful in situational scenarios.

He is 1 cog in this machine that One Bills Drive needs to purge. Rob needs to go next!

  38. Buffalo ownership, who hired the Ryan brothers, is at fault here. Their head coach underachieves, no matter what team he is coaching. His defensive coordinator, in dire need of a haircut, has no clue on how to stop opposing offenses, no matter what team he is coaching.

  39. What’s amazing is that there are still, I’m pretty sure, some people in Baltimore that wish Rex had been hired as Head Coach, and many more that hope he will return as DC.

  40. Besides the occasional big play, Buffalo’s Offense couldn’t move the ball up the field. That is why Greg Roman was fired. Lets not forget that his game plan is quite lackluster… He was running screen plays with Charles Clay! You have an all around weapon in Sammy Watkins, who’s not getting the ball… a great possession receiver in Robert Woods and you are not using him for his ability to move the sticks?… A split back in Reggie Bush that is known for making plays in open space and you run him up the gut?… A star RB in LeSean McCoy, who could dice up a defense running and pass catching, so you use him sparingly? A bruising backup RB in Mike Gillislee that can wear the defense down, but you have him sitting most of the game? A tough, tall and athletic TE in Clay and you have him catching passes behind the line instead of deep plays and redzone shots?
That is the reason Greg Roman was fired.

  41. I think that a line from Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle in “Major League” is the best way to describe this move:

“Well, obviously they’re thinking…. actually I have no idea what they’re thinking!”

  42. The Bills organization is just stupid as a whole. Doug Marrone shouldn’t have been fired for Rex and I’m a Jets fan. Buffalo was doomed the moment Rob became the DC.

  43. Just like the Bills, lots of kneejerk reactions in the comments. What you idiots don’t realize is that offense has been bad the past 2 games. Yes they put up 31 pts against the Jets D but 14 of those were off blown coverages, another 7 on a fumble and another 7 from garbage time. Defense was bad but when the offense was only on the field for 20 minutes of the entire game yyour offense sucks. The defense was so winded by half time they didn’t have it in them for the rest of the game.

  44. The Peguals werent happy enough ruining our hockey team alone, so the decided to destroy the football team awell…..#Schmuckcoach…..

  45. People saying the offense wasn’t the problem clearly haven’t watched the last two games.

Our offense is ugly and we don’t even run basic plays we also dont use most of the field.

    The Bills basically 4 plays.

    1. Jet Sweep left
    2. Read option then pass it to the flat
    3. Read option and watch Shady dance around 3 unblocked defenders.
    4. Long bomb to whoever is running a 9 route

  46. “The Bills are 0-2 and starting down a part of the schedule which isn’t conducive to turning things around quickly, with games against the Cardinals and Patriots on the horizon.
    ———————————————————————

Basically, any team that plays that Bills defense has an extra bye week this season.

Speaking of not being able to look away from a train rex – I would love to have seen what Tom Brady would have done to that defense in week 4.

  47. Wait a minute. G Ro’s offense was ranked 12 in points last year and 13 in yards. That is impressive for the 1st year of offense installation. Then the Bills fire him after his offense scores 31 points????

Roman is the best running game coordinator in football next to Bill Callahan. He is the perfect OC for a defensive minded Head Coach. Espiceally one who likes to “ground and pound”. I doubt this came from Rex Ryan. He had to be pressured to fired him. Nobody who knows football and is in their right mind would fire a coach like Gregg Roman. NFL front offices need more patience. It’s takes an average of three years to build a team unless you have a hall of fame QB. To fire an OC, two games into his 2nd season, after having close to a top 10 offense is insane.

    _____________________

    I don’t.

  49. It’s not so much the firing of Greg Roman that perplexes me as anyone who knows Roman knows his offensive schemes are pretty vanilla but its the fact Rex can’t find fault with the defense because his brother is the coach of it. I shake my head in astonishment at Rexy which is truly saying something seeing as the team I cheer for is coached by Mr. Jeffrey Fisher.

  50. After his previous coaching stints, would any NFL head coach in his right mind have ever hired Rob Ryan other than kin? I wonder if old Robby knows he’s in the last days of his last NFL job.

  51. If they had a ring ceremony and a parade for the Offseason Championship, I think everyone would feel a lot better.

Don’t worry, if Ryan’s Bills manage to beat the Garappolo led Patrions in a couple of weeks, he’ll declare himself Coach of the Year.

  52. On the brighter side, Roman now has a head start on the OC jobs that will be opening later this year.

  53. That’s been a hard fall. He was the apparent shoe in for the Jacksonville job when Dave Caldwell became GM, but SF was actually good back then, so he had to coach through the playoffs. Now, he’s been on the wrong end of the daughter Baalke’s tweets on the way to getting kicked out the door there and now this. Ouch.

  54. This is what you get when you hire Wrecks Ryan as a Head Coach. He was a joke with the Jets and he is the same with the bills. If the Bills continue to swoon, he will be the one who will be fired.

  55. If we could somehow get Rex Ryan, Rob Ryan, Jeff Fischer and Norv Turner on a team together,it would be the “how do they have a job” team and guaranteed to be mediocre at best.

oh and Dennis Thurman is the DC. Keep trying though, you might get something right.

  58. I don’t know about this one. The defense was like swiss cheese after the 1st quarter, and the offense did have some big plays. On the other hand, they either called runs up the middle or 30+ yard passes all night. Some of it was Taylor, who has happy feet and flees the pocket too easily. He also has no touch and can be inaccurate on short/medium passes. McCoy is looking closer to done than ever, with his dancing around. Not sure what the answer is, but they just aren’t good enough all around.

    ———-

this is about as lame as a one-legged horse

really, why even bother if that is the best you can do?

  60. Anyone commenting, “how could the Bills fire their offensive coordinator after scoring 31 points?” either doesn’t understand football or didn’t watch the game.

The team is giving their best player, McCoy less than 20 carries a game and constantly running from the shotgun or not using him on 3rd/4th and short. The play calling has been terrible, uncreative and predictable.

That being said, the defense is awful, but missing key players to suspension. Rex did take a top-five defense and make them average, but the Bills offense, believe it or not, has been worse than the defense.

Also, Rob isn’t the defensive coordinator, so please educate yourself before posting.

  61. I would have thought the defensive coordinator would be the first to go.

After putting up 31 points? What did they fire him for, the Baltimore game?

  62. There are two NFL cities that I am always checking the local media about. New England and Buffalo. The one thing I notice about both is how different their appraisals are compared to how the national media views these teams’ strengths and shortcomings. Same goes for fans of other teams compared to the actual fans of these two teams. When I listen to the Buffalo media about Tyrod what I get is a story about a guy who can’t throw over the middle, can’t do read progressions, has a big arm for the deep ball but has no touch for the short ones. The Buffalo offense sucked for a whole lot of reason last night and the high score doesn’t reflect that. If they’d won then great; they got away with one. But they didn’t so the problems remain and they fired the coach because they are desperate and they aren’t ready to give up on Tyrod…. just yet.

  63. Exactly what in the franchise’s past 15 year history has warranted such a high level of expectations? A good defense for a couple of years? New owners? Rex Ryan? There’s no missing piece to get them to the next level. It’s a middling team with a like minded coach. Thinking way too highly of this squad.

  64. Rex used to be a fat zero with a perverted foot fetish. Now he is a surgically modified zero with perverted a foot fetish. 86 this tool out of the NFL!
