Kelvin Beachum staying overnight at hospital for observation

Jaguars left tackle Kelvin Beachum won’t be joining his teammates for the trip back to Jacksonville, but the news from San Diego about his condition is good.

The Jaguars announced that Beachum was taken to the hospital after being immobilized on the field in Sunday’s loss to the Chargers. Beachum was kicked/kneed in the head and was diagnosed with a concussion shortly after leaving the field. Beachum had movement in his extremities, however, and further tests for other spinal damage were negative.

Beachum will spend the night in the hospital under observation.

Beachum signed with the Jaguars as a free agent this offseason. His 2015 season ended with a cart ride last October when he tore his ACL while with the Steelers.

It’s the second positive update for a player injured in that fashion on Sunday. Saints cornerback P.J. Williams also had to be immobilized after taking a pair of knees to the head on the same play during his team’s loss to the Giants. Williams also has movement in his extremities and coach Sean Payton said Williams is feeling better.

  1. Chargers fan here. Felt awful, watching him stay down for so long. Didn’t see any movement from him on the cart, but was happy to hear that he’s returning to normal now. A very dangerous sport, indeed. As much as I love this sport, you’ll never catch one of my kids playing it.
