The Chargers opened a roster spot on Monday by placing running back Danny Woodhead on injured reserve after confirming he tore his ACL in Sunday’s victory over the Jaguars.
Woodhead is the second key offensive player lost for the year to that injury in as many weeks, joining Keenan Allen on the shelf for the rest of the year. They filled Woodhead’s spot by signing a player to help out the receiving corps with Allen out of the picture.
The Chargers announced that they have signed Griff Whalen. Whalen was among the Dolphins cuts as they made their way down to 53 players early this month.
Whalen joined Stanford teammate Andrew Luck as a Colts rookie in 2012 and played 33 games for the team over the last three years. He had 45 catches for 487 yards and three touchdowns, although may be best remembered for snapping the ball on the team’s ill-fated fake punt against the Patriots last season.
