Patriots appear set to start Jacoby Brissett, with Julian Edelman No. 2

Getty Images

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to miss Thursday night’s game with a shoulder injury, which means rookie Jacoby Brissett is the only healthy quarterback on the roster while Tom Brady is suspended.

And yet Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Patriots do not plan on adding another quarterback.

That apparently means that Bill Belichick is comfortable with Brissett as the starter and receiver Julian Edelman, a college quarterback, as the backup.

If Brissett gets hurt during Thursday night’s game, the Patriots would be running some interesting plays: Edelman would struggle to run an NFL passing offense, and presumably the Patriots would have to adjust by running more of a college-style spread offense than what they run now.

Still, Edelman knows the Patriots’ offense well, and Belichick apparently thinks anyone the Patriots could bring in today would struggle to get up to speed well enough to run the offense any better than Edelman could on Thursday. So Brissett will start, Edelman will back him up, and those will be the Patriots’ only options.

  1. Belichick has moved from regular chess to fourth dimensional chess. Don’t be surprised if you see an oddly young looking Doug Flutie at WR.

  2. Who cares if the Patriots lose their next two games? Seriously, who cares? The rest of the division isn’t all that great sans the Jets, and the Patriots can thwack them. The Patriots went .500 at worst. I see no reason to sign another QB for only two weeks.

  3. I like that move. If J.G. is expected to need 10 days to recover (as is being reported), he will be ready for the Pat’s following game (10/2 vs. Bills). If Brissett gets injured (or likely even if he does not) the Patriots are going to lose. Why cut someone and spend the money on another player if it will not help the situation.

  4. I definitely cringe at the thought of Brisette getting hurt, but at the same time I am intrigued at the thought of Edelman under center.

  5. I really hate the Patriots, due to the fact I’m a Dolphins fan. However I have a ton of respect for Coach BB.

Tom Brady is hands down a legend at the position but I don’t think it matters who the qb is…..they are gonna win even if Edelman is the QB.

  6. And that’s the way it should be. Jacoby Brissett may have a short week but he seams to me a smart man. Bill will not let him do anything he’s not prepared to do. Let’s just hope the offensive line protects him for four quarters.

  7. I’m guessing Belichick knows he’s not going to win behind a street QB. If Brissett goes down he’ll just have Edelman hand off and run the same play repeatedly until the game is over. Basically, a big middle finger to the NFL on national TV. “Are you not. not entertained?!!”

  8. And they’ll win 24-10. Bellichick won with Vinny Testeverde, for Christ sake and he didn’t hide him that year they went 11-5 in Cleveland. Guy’s the best to ever do this.

  9. It may be they know it’s only one game and Garoppolo will be back next week. If that’s the case then if Brissett goes down and Julian comes on then so what. Beat the bills and go 3-1. Houston will lose some along the way. That tie breaker shouldn’t matter that much.

  10. BB will have Jacoby ready for the game. Hopefully Jimmy will be back to spank Rex and the Bills in two weeks. Just glad the Pats don’t have to play the Jets until Brady is back.

  11. Really, this is all gravy. Jimmy G exceeded expectations. Any sane Pats fan would have settled for 2 wins and Brady back. Now I feel better than ever knowing there is a competent QB ready to carry on the legacy.

I’m sure Jimmy is hurting today, but you just made yourself a truckload of money my friend.

  12. So if Edelman has to play, do they just go wildcat the rest of the game. I’m sure he can still throw the ball but he’s not developing timing with receivers in 3 days. Just not happening.

  13. And they’re going to do just fine with Jacoby Brissett. If I’ve learned nothing else the past two weeks, I’ve certainly learned the Pats could put a monkey in the driver’s seat and still be dominant (credit to Bill). Two yard Tammy is truly overrated.

    —————————————————-

Based on what I saw out Suh and Mario Williams on Sunday, maybe you should be hating the Dolphins’ front office!

  15. Out of curiosity, who was the last non-QB to come in and take over(except for a trick play)? Maybe Antwaan Randel El years ago? There used to be an emergency QB rule so that didn’t come up but that rule is gone.

It would be a hell of a sight, like when a positional player pitches in a blowout baseball game.

  16. I could be dead wrong but I think it’s all about having to cut someone just to add a Quarterback that they will only use if someone gets hurt…

The possibility of losing someone on the team in favor of a 4 day rental doesn’t make any sense since they are 2 and 0…

    Just guessing…

    Go Pats!!!!

  17. Makes sense to me. No need to cut a role player off the roster for a 10-day backup QB rental. Already broke even on these first four games, win even one of the remaining ones and they’re in great shape for Brady’s return and we can rightly thumb our noses at Goodell, so no need to shake things up now. Brissett probably comes out alive, and if not, Jules can hold the fort down and just hand the ball off. No game is a “throwaway” per se, but if they drop these next two, there’s no need to pull the fire alarm, so I can see leaving well enough alone.

  18. ” Edelman would struggle to run an NFL passing offense, and presumably the Patriots would have to adjust by running more of a college-style spread offense than what they run now.”

Really? You think Edelman would struggle with an offense he’s played in for years and has watched the master run over and over again?

I don’t. He might struggle because of his height and not being able to see well over the Oline, but not because of why you think he’d have problems.

That’s actually a really good point, Belichick could find some reluctant solace in putting up a stinker on the NFL Network. Just reminded me I need to find a bar or something Thursday night to minimize the ratings while still catching the game. So far this year I’ve only watched the two Pats games, and local high school ball on Friday nights. I’m phasing myself out of the NFL for when the Pats’ run is over and I can stop supporting this joke of a league. But the Pats are on a once-in-a-lifetime tear, I can’t miss all this just because the commissioner is a bozo.

  22. they won on a missed FG week 1… they almost blew a 21 pt lead in this last game to Ryan Tannehill for goodness sake.. I give them.. no they take their respect.. but it isn’t like they have been blowing people out… that will come in week 5

  23. BB: I’ll beat you with my MVP QB, his backup QB, a rookie QB, or even a wide receiver
    ___________________________________
But I got fired by the Browns because I couldnt beat anybody.

  24. Let’s be honest here. If these first two games have proven anything, it is that the Patriots can win with anyone at quarterback. I don’t mean that as a knock on Brady. It just shows how good BB is at getting the most out of what he has.

Now, if Terry Pegula can just figure how to hire competent coaches and front office personnel… too much to hope for, frankly.

  25. Belichick is pretty metaculous with his roster moves, so I guess the addition of a street QB isnt more valuable then cutting current player on the roster and subjecting him to waivers, its a short week so he probably would trust Edelman at QB over any of those guys anyways. I think a

  26. Ok, so Brisett is the starter, Edelman is #2 who is the emergency QB? BB must have some other option for QB on the team that he is not making mention of.

My guess is that either JG will be the emergency QB (and the Pats will pray they do not need him), or if he is really hurting they will sign another warm body to sit the bench JIC.

  27. I think if Jimmy G was going to IR, then BB would probably sign a QB but the fact hes ready to roll with 1 QB shows the injury isnt as bad as I thought (separation or bone break). A couple years ago Belichick had 1 active TE on the roster for a game, which I thought was insane. 1 Active QB and a emergency is way crazier, but if he doesnt feel like changing up the the roster for a possible 3 day rental, then so be it. Having Ventrone on the roster would be clutch right now though for that exact scenario. lol

  28. “Seeing how mainly anybody can plug into their system and do good, which is a testament to their system more than Brady, it should be fine.t”

People keep posting this over and over and couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Not only can any QB not run this system, very few can. You need a very high IQ and football IQ and a very fast mind to process all the options.

If it was really that simple then all 31 other teams would have copied this system and turned it against the Pats years ago.

Keep trying to act like Brady and Garrappollo are nothing special. You couldn’t be more wrong.

As always, Belichick finds players with strengths he likes and adjusts him system to put a given player in a position to succeed.

  29. This is why I love my Patriots. They are a TEAM! No one is padding their stats, no one is screaming “Me, Me, Me” and they have each others backs. They are students of the game and work hard with great dedication to win.

  30. “Brisett is the starter, Edelman is #2 who is the emergency QB?”

There is no more “emergency QB” rule, it was eliminated a few years ago.

Ie if you have a 3rd string QB, he must be on the active, game day roster to play. If you’re inactive you’re inactive period, QB or no.

  31. What Bum Phillips so eloquently stated about Bear Bryant may be applicable to BB………He can take his’n and beat your’n then take your’n and beat his’n.

    =======================
Or not. The Pats are 2-0 with their 2nd and 3rd string QBs. It ain’t the SB but that might be worth a block party in and of itself when you consider other teams who can’t achieve that with their 1st string QBs.

  33. I am not worried about Edelman as a backup QB. A high school QB can start at New England and have success. This is a great system.

  34. .
Best case scenario : Brissett manages a conservative game plan, doesn’t turn the ball over and gives the Patriots a chance to win.

Worst case scenario : Brissett struggles in his first start against a very good Texans defense, but the Patriots get to observe whom they drafted in real game time situations.

Looking at Brady’s age, Garopollo’s recent performances, and Brissett’s untapped potential, the Patriots are going to have to be astute as they sort out the QB position for the future.
    .

  35. Maybe Garappolo dresses. Even if he can’t throw they could probably manage the pain enough for him to hand off, if the need came up. He’ s probably not going to be hit if he doesn’t drop back.

  36. Edelman behind centre would be a sandwich in a few minutes.
Good luck with that one!!! If you think the Texans are coming in to admire the view, get over it. This could be an interesting Thursday night game.

Their 3rd sting TE was a QB a few years ago until he converted to TE in his senior year.

  38. BS. No way. I think this means Garropolo is going to be there and be the second QB even if he just has to hand off.

  39. Bill Bellicheck be like, if my system makes Jimmy Garoppolo look like Tom Brady, it can make Brissett look like Matt Ryan and I should be able to at least get a Ryan Fitzpatrick out of my WRs

  40. On a short week Bill O’Brian has to give some thought to all of Belichick’s adjustments in all phases of the game due to being down to the third QB on the depth chart, never mind what he might do if Brissett exits the game.

  41. They could put an orange traffic cone in there and it would do about the same as the other system QBs… the guy above who’s claiming Garopollo is something special is especially hilarious.

The guy above who suggested maybe they should trade Brady before he loses even more value is probably onto something.

    ———————-

Since Brady isn’t playing, they don’t have anything to type.

  44. The problem for the Texans is that Belichick got a look at Osweiler last year in Denver, so his defensive game plan will be geared to make him make enough mistakes to win the game for the Patriots. Just watch and see. Patriots are going to win a low scoring game where everybody wonders how did that just happen.

  45. Does this mean they hold Edelman out of the offense, to prevent injury, just in case he is needed? Or do they just play football and let the chips fall, and see how it plays out? They already keep him out of special teams plays. Brissett is a big kid, and probably fairly durable, but do they tell him to keep the scrambling to a minimum? It’s an interesting dilemma. The play calling should be intesting, perhaps with a few FU calls for Her Goodell.

    ……

But the only reason Miami was within striking distance of a tie is because the Pats starting QB went down and Gostowski missed a FG he makes 95% of the time, so I’d say the football karma is even.

  47. I get a kick out of #TheHaters who spout off about “system QBs”. Let’s talk about the quintessential system QB….Peyton Manning. He needed Polian to actually get the league to change the rules by which DBs could cover receivers to win games in the postseason! If that is not a “system QB” I don’t know what is……

It is indeed! But how about your Jets? Why don’t you tell us what you think about their chances this season? They look pretty tough to me. Do you think your Jets will give the Patriots some competition?

  49. if he were to play qb that would mean edelman has played special teams, corner (2011 season), wide receiver, and qb. anyone ever play that many different spots since the old days?

  50. I wish it was like the NHL with emergency goalies where a coach could suit up if needed… that would be fun.

Would probably be McDaniels, but I bet Scarnecchia would get the best out of the O-line because the Pats linemen wouldn’t want to face his wrath in practice if he got sacked.

  51. Many of the Pats fans on this sight are very excited right now … as am I … even if you hate the Patriots , you have to marvel at what is happening here… I am speaking strictly from a Karma perceptive.

2-0 without Brady… missed field goals … JG playing out of his mind … and the 3rd string guy filling in admirably despite almost blowing a 24pt lead… this is an almost orchestrated “up yours” to Goodell and the other 31 owners for sticking it to the Pats they way they did…

I am positive that all this is happening for a reason and that is gonna happen in February when Goodell has to had the Lombardy to Kraft AGAIN !!!

    One can dream right!!!

  52. I’m Buying into it : Belichick is a Genius!- I honestly believe he’d win with Nick Foles at QB under this system – as long as the Defense holds, they look tough! The ONLY teams that could be a real threat to them in the AFC, are Denver & Pittsburgh….so far

  53. Texans are favored by 2 or 2.5 coming into NE.

As a Pats fan…I’m absolutely chomping at the bit for this game. Thursday cannot get here soon enough.

Systems do work miracles with QBs.

Illegal performance enhancing drugs work miracles even more with lots of players, and can even get you 6 tainted titles, as the Steelers would tell you.

    🙂

  55. Ah the “problems” of the 4 time World Champions 🙂 With the 4 best QBs in the AFC East being Brady, Garoppolo, Brissett and Edelman it’s hard to find playing time for them all don’t you think?

    Discuss.

    🙂

  56. The Pats have proven that they can win with anyone at the QB position – they are just that much better than the majority of teams in today’s watered-down NFL product.

Winning regular season games is different from winning in the playoffs though, and that is the ocean of difference that separates Brady from the rest.

  57. Well plan B was an unqualified success, on to Plan C.

The fact is, due to the beneficence of 354 Park Ave, who gave us this joke of a Thursday night game, not guy they could possibly bring in today would be better than Edelman with only the one practice and one walk thru teams get before this game.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh and his form teammate GM Nick Cassario alternate being the scout team’s QB this week. BTW- If they determine that JG can’t go against Buffalo, then they WILL bring in someone later this week.

  58. Brady has started 223 regular season games. He averages over 12 wins a year as a starter. Belichick is a great coach and Garoppolo looked good for exactly 1.4 games before going down. The system is good, but Brady is great.

  59. “if he were to play qb that would mean edelman has played special teams, corner (2011 season), wide receiver, and qb. anyone ever play that many different spots since the old days”

Another Patriot of course, Troy Brown. One year when there were a lot of injuries he played his normal wideout position, kick returner, cornerback (with 3 INTs) and I believe also played on special teams on the coverage unit for punts/kickoffs.

What an orange traffic cone can come back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl against the leagues best defense then maybe I will believe you.

  61. If either Brisset of Edelman QBs the Patriots to a victory over Ryan and the Bills it would be the ultimate final chapter victory. How could Rex come back from that?

  62. The Texans won a playoff game with third string TJ Yates and 2 games last year with a street QB. Neither of those teams had the benefit of being coached by BB. I’m a Texans fan, and expect a win, but the Pats pulling off a win in a low scoring game wouldn’t surprise me at all. They’re at home and BB is a hella great coach. All that said, seeing Edelman under center would be kind of awesome.

Maybe your pathetic Dolphin team should hire someone to write a playbook so they can have a system too. Maybe the Dolphins could purchase one that was already written from a high school or community college football team.

  66. The NFL should just release the PSI information from the 2015 season so that even the dopes will finally see that cold weather naturally lowers the PSI in footballs.

Then the NFL can cancel the Brady suspension and he can play on Thursday night.

  67. The Patriots will be fine with the rookie and Edelman. Besides, why would Coach Hoodie want to bring another QB to expose to the Patriots bag of tricks. After all, the one QB who is most immersed in the Patriots bag of tricks ( including deflating footballs) will be back in a couple of weeks.

  68. Jacoby’s another one with the “it” factor. Don’t go shortchanging him. I’m telling you all, Brissett’s bigger and badder than Jimmy G. and this dude can ball. It will be a fun game.

  69. The Patriots system is that they don’t have a system. He’s the only coach that doesn’t have one. Brady has run like 4 or 5 different what would be called systems in other organizations since he’s been there, from a ball control run offense in the Antoine Smith/Cory Dillon days where he was a top end game manager to a deep passing offense with Moss to a double TE offense (on the fly I might add in the mdidle of a season after trading Moss) to the short passing offense now that is a variation of the old West Coast offense. Belichick does that and somehow gets players that at every level of the offense can grasp it and QBs that can understand it enough to fit into it. Guy’s brilliant. And that’s just the offense. When he has defensive personnel like he has now and had from the remnants of the Parcells era that he won with early, his teams are virtually unbeatable because he’s going to neutralize what you do best and also have your defense trying to stop something that they really might not have seen on film before. And somehow he gets that installed from week to week. Like even if you’re one of the ones who hate him, admit he’s great.

More importantly don’t ever forget that the only reason that Tom Brady did not play the last 2 weeks is because the NFL used the fact that cold weather lowers the PSI in footballs as an excuse to help make league parity.

All while the NFL continues to hide the PSI information that was collected during the 2015 season.

  71. System QB – a term that was created to diminish the accomplishments of a QB that has inflated statistics from running a spread offense.

If silly trolls that keep mentioning “system QB” would just read the article above they would understand that the Pats don’t fit the definition of a system and would have to change to a spread offense if their wide receiver has to play QB.

  72. While everyone refers to Jacoby Brissett from NC State, he actually spent most of his career at Florida where he OC was …Charlie Weis. Maybe he had a head start on this offense and maybe the Pats had some inside info before the draft.
