Darrelle Revis blames ex-agents for “out of shape” leak

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has had a rough season, so far. Repeatedly beaten on the field by great receivers like A.J. Green and journeymen like Marquise Goodwin, Revis also has faced criticism for work habits that supposedly have contributed to his decline.

Jason Cole of BleacherReport.com recently reported that Revis is out of shape. Revis believes that report came from his former agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod. (Cole later claimed that the information came from people who had worked out with Revis during the offseason.)

“Yeah, no doubt,” Revis said Wednesday, via the Associated Press. “No doubt. Definitely.”

Revis parted ways with Schwartz and Feinsod earlier this year.

“If that’s how they want to approach it, that’s how they approach it on their end,” Revis said regarding the agents. “This is just how they approached it. That has nothing to do with me.”

Reached for comment on the matter, Schwartz echoed the comment he provided to PFT when news emerged that Revis had changed agents: “As I previously stated, Jonathan and I only wish Darrelle the best of luck.”

It’s actually not in the best business interests of Schwartz or Feinsod to publicly or privately criticize Revis. They’ll continue to collect a fee for as long as his current contract is in place. If he gets cut by the Jets, they don’t get paid.

Revis still has not hired new agents. It probably would be in his best business interests to do so; skilled agents would know how to properly push back against media members who have joined in the anti-Revis feeding frenzy, getting them to soften their assessment at a minimum and, at best, to move on to other topics.

Skilled agents also would be in position to advise Revis regarding what he should and shouldn’t be saying, at press conferences, on Twitter, or elsewhere, about what appears to be the commencement of the decline of his career. The problem is that few skilled agents will be inclined to offer representation to Revis at a time when his current contract will result in Schwartz and Feinsod getting the fees.

  1. Long time Jets fan here.
The biggest issue for Revis is he needs to adjust his technique to compensate for his “declining” skills.
For instance, against Goodwin he was looking in the backfield trying to read the QB and he did it for a split second too long. Back in the day he probably could get away with this, but he needs to alter his approach bc his margin of error is shrinking.

The supposed decline in his play is way overrated. The whole secondary has been having issues and this has led to some busted coverages which have made Revis look worse than he is really playing.

  2. So you’re saying your old agents have watched you in practice during training camp and concluded you’re out of shape?? Yeah, ok!! It was most likely someone who watches you move around on a daily basis.

  3. He fired his agents because he knows he’s on his last deal.. no further need for their services or bad company, he’s done

  4. One of the most overrated players I’ve ever seen.

Had a good 2007 rookie year, a better 2008 and an elite 2009, and then slowly started to tumble from there.

He was hurt in 2010 and 2011, played in 2012 and played well, but blew out his ACL in 2013 and then won a ring with the greatest franchise of the cap era.

    But, that’s basically 3 good/great seasons before a series of solid/middling ones.

And, this guy thinks he’s going to the Hall of Fame?

    Why?

I am not even sure he can hold Ty Law’s jock.

I have also never seen him be a gamer. He’s never really risen up in big games before.

Torched a lot last year and this year so far.

So, 3 or 4 very good or great years?

It’s amazing how the NY media has this power to brainwash people.

  5. I’m pretty sure the genesis of these reports is the size of his behind. Perhaps being torched repeatedly has something to do with it as well.

He does look good in a Jet uniform when he plays like this however.

  6. Lol, his agents have nothing to do with those out of shape comments and we all know it. If things keep going on the field the way have for the 1st eighth of the season, it’ll soon be called Breakfast Island because all he will be doing is getting toasted.

  7. Vikes fan here that watches a lot of football. I watched revis’ first two games. He is still a top corner, A.J Green did get the best of him, but part of it was his safety help.

Goodwin has Olympic speed, he beat Revis on a go route with a perfectly thrown ball.

    Don’t worry about Revis.

  8. Well, it’s the truth. Grow some thicker skin or get in proper shape. It’s not like he’s 45 either, he’s 30, barely 31 I believe. He’s not in top shape, he has no definition because the body fat covers up all the muscles. There’s no excuse for that. Get in shape. Go look at guys like Terence Newman, that guy is close to 40 and he’s still ripped. Get in shape or get used to people ripping you for not being in shape. It’s the NFL. You don’t play QB, you’re not a lineman. You’re supposed to run with the best athletes in the world, you can’t do that looking like Uncle Mike from a BBQ family reunion.

  9. If you listen to Revis long enough you’ll invariably realize somebody or something else is always to blame, be it money, performance, or anything else.

  10. Fellow Pats fan here tylawpick6. I have to disagree with you. I live in New York and sadly was forced to watch many Jets games. Revis was a stud. No doubt about it. I love me some Ty Law but Revis is a better INDIVIDUAL player than Ty was. Ty was AWESOME and fit in perfectly with the Pats but. Asked in individual careers, gotta give the edge (regrettably) to Revis. I am and always have been sick of the Revis Island BS though.

  11. So he’s blaming his former agents about the out of shape rumors. He’s probably not out of shape, at least then he would have an excuse. His former agents would have nothing to gain by this, it’s not like he’s getting another contract.
