Who’s the first quarterback to be benched?

Plenty of quarterbacks have exited the starting lineup this season due to injury. Eventually, inevitably, someone will be benched.

So who’s the first started to be invited to take a seat? That’s the subject of Thursday’s PFT Live question of the day.

Cast your ballot below, elaborate in the comments, and then tune in tomorrow morning for the three-hour tour of the NFL. Guests include former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, and NBC Sports Medicine Analyst Mike Ryan.

The show begins at 6:00 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Radio. At 7:00 a.m. ET, the NBCSN simulcast commences.

  1. Jimmy Garoppolo.

In all seriousness unless Goff is horrifying bad, I dont see how its not Keenum. Why is Siemien on this list, he’s 2-0 with the defending SB champs, his defense will bail him out like they did last year for Manning.

Most coaches love to ride their hand picked QB, and Fisher is a tougher spot than the other coaches with the future of the team holding the clipboard. The other guys listed on the poll either made the teams either playoffs last year or have Krapernick as their backup

  2. Keenum, hands down.
In a vacuum it would probably be Gabbert but SF would probably rather set themselves on fire than start Kaepernick and going around him for Ponder would be too obvious. Gruden can’t cave to the whiners in his locker room and hope to survive. Denver is playing with house money and isn’t going to rush Lynch, the smartest kid in the room might and the dumbest would have started him week 1 but the kid that wants to be perceived as the smartest won’t until they feel they have to.

  3. Fisher gave Keenum a game ball on Sunday, for being “2-0” against Seattle.

They scored 9 points this year, and last year Keenum passed for barely 100 yards on them, but 2-0 nonetheless.

Just shows how Fisher views the QB position vs the rest of the world.

  4. I’m surprised Tyrod Taylor wasn’t one of the choices. He has been awful for the first two games, and if he doesn’t get things going, there’s no way the Bills can keep starting him.

  5. Fake 49er fans wanted Kap to be cut, and now they want Gabbert to be benched. If the 9ers actually cut or traded Kap before the season began, then who could have taken Gabbert’s place? Christian Ponder wasn’t signed and Driskell showed that he couldn’t handle the job and was cut. That was why even though there is a persistent campaign in the media to oust kap from the 9ers organization, he is still on the roster. You don’t cut the only quaterback who took the team to the only SB since the 1994 season or trade him for a middle round pick just because the team had a lousy coach in 2015. Gabbert won one more game than Kap last season, and that was an overtime game the Niners should have lost. Gabbert has shown that he is no better than kap and he has never guided a team to the playoffs. Nevertheless it is still too early to bench him. Give him a chance to show that he can be a good quarterback.

  6. Turnovers and a few defensive mistakes were the reason the niners lost last week. Cannot blame Gabbert for the loss. That is why he is still the starter against the Sea Hogs. If he cannot win against the lousy Hogs, he may be benched.

  7. Is Midget Wilson the most underrated QB in the NFL, or is he really the most overrated QB in the NFL? He has done reasonably well when he had a good running game and no injury. He has not played well at all without a good rusher and a sprained ankle. He could have been in worse shape if his defense has not been so stingy.

  8. Give Fisher a break. If he threw Goff to the wolves everyone would be on Fisher’s case.

The multi-million dollar investment the Rams have made in Goff stands a better chance of paying off if he has some time on the bench to really learn; think Aaron Rodgers.

  9. The Aaron Rodgers example is so flawed as a testament to sitting and learning. He would have been good either way, because he’s good. If you stink, you can sit for 5 years and when you get on the field, you’re gonna stink…..

  10. Gabbert is playing poorly, and probably the third best QB on the 49ers. Ponder hasn’t been there long enough, and Kaepernick missed a lot of time. I imagine the 49ers will continue to call a lot of running plays for their QB. That’s the fastest way to get another QB on the field.
