Joe Horn: Roger Goodell is the Vladimir Putin of the NFL

AP

Former NFL player Joe Horn has never hidden his animosity toward NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and now Horn is drawing an interesting parallel between Goodell and an infamous authoritarian leader.

“Roger Goodell is like the Vladimir f–kin Putin of the NFL,” Horn told SI.com. “You quote me on that shit. Roger Goodell is the Vladimir Putin of the NFL when it comes to players. Putin punks every country when he gets ready to. And there’s no rules when it comes to Putin, and Goodell is the same f–kin way when it comes to players. He sets all the standards.”

Asked whether Goodell would kill Horn — as Putin has reportedly had critics killed — Horn admitted that Goodell might not be quite that bad. But he’s pretty bad, in Horn’s view.

“If they read that quote, they would know that he’s not having people killed and none of the players killed,” Horn said. “But as far as dictatorship, as far as making moves to do what he wants, that’s what Putin does.”

Horn’s tenure in the NFL only overlapped briefly with Goodell’s. Paul Tagliabue was the commissioner for most of Horn’s playing career, including his famous cell phone celebration, which resulted in a $30,000 fine from the NFL. But Horn has become a harsh critic of the league under Goodell’s leadership, and Horn is one of the many former players who has sued the NFL over brain injuries.

Horn is far from the first former player to criticize Goodell, but the Putin comparison is a new one.

  1. It’s about time someone said it. Just remember, Article 46 has been in the CBA since the 60’s. Only der fuerher has seen fit to crush the players with it.

  2. You are all morons. Goodall is just a puppet for 32 owners. He does as he is told to. Your beef is misplaced! It’s like blaming a $10hr burger flipper at McDonald’s for their food sucking, they are not the ones pulling the strings.

  3. How is this newsworthy? Joe Horn had an affair with a teammates wife and was traded to the Falcons. How is this guys opinion relevant to anything in the NFL front office?

  4. These football players really think they got it tuff !Joe Horn was fined for pulling a cell phone out in the end zone while making crazy money ,,,just think about that for a minute !

  5. Putin is a genius strategist while Roger is a crony capitalist that used political connections for his job while being unable to get even the kick-off rules to do what he wants.

If he said Roger is like confused Hillary, I would agree

  6. When his 32 corrupt bosses are depositing truckloads of cash on a daily basis, they don’t care what you call him.

Players can only blame themselves for electing De. Smith. He sold the players out. Ohh, he’s depositing truckloads too.

If the players have any clue, they get rid of Smith before the next TV deal and CBA.

I’ve been preaching this for a long time. People don’t care. It’s easier to point the finger at one person than a group, so that’s what people will continue to do.

  8. I don’t really think Roger’s doing a good job, but this is the dumbest comparison I’ve ever seen.

I doubt Joe Horn could say word one about Putin’s policies, their effects, and how they are like or unlike Goodell’s work for the NFL.

Us morons realize there is only person ultimately responsible for player discipline. If you think any owner wants to discipline their players I have a bridge to sell you.

  10. I would say it is unfair to compare Goodell to Putin. Putin would find that very insulting. Goodell is more of a leach on the NFL using the success to draw enormous salaries and offering nothing other than bad press and embarrassment.

  11. Roger’s work is greatly appreciated by the owners as he does their dirty work so they can sit back and act like upstanding businessmen. He didn’t get a big pay raise because they are unhappy with his efforts so maybe he is a symptom and not the cause.

You must mean Hillary’s reset button with Putin!

  13. …shut up joe – I’m a SAINTS fan and your stupid opinion hasn’t beet worth crap for years…don’t get me wrong NO-ONE hates the BASTARD commissioner more than me – but joe’s opinion is no longer any more relevant than mine – WHO DAT!

  14. My guess is that Joe Horn lacks an understanding of the legality of contractual obligations, specifically the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. Maybe next time the players won’t allow Maurice Smith to sell them out by taking the short money. Or maybe not. After all, they did re-elect him after he guaranteed that the players got the screw job.

Putin is liked in his own country. No one even likes Goodell.

  16. they are all making to much money, the players, the owners, goodell to be whining about anything

  17. Upon hearing Horn’s comments, Goodell announced that Horn will be suspended for 4 games. When Goodell found out that Horn is retired, he said we’ll just subtract his last 4 games of pay from his retirement fund. “I’m the Goodell, I can do that.”

  19. Joe Horn, many NFL players, the NFLPA and members of the media seem to labor under the delusion that the NFL is some sort of democracy. It is not. It is a business, and the team owners and Goodell have every right to operate their business in a fashion that is in keeping with the labor agreement. If they don’t lie it they have only themselves and Dee Smith to blame. The players could always quit/retire, but since they like the huge paychecks, and for many their next best career option is picking up and delivering heavy things, they won’t do it.

  20. Grogan, lets be fair. Under former commissioners, players were able to beat their wives and kids and face no punishment. Hell one player, was only fined $75,000 for involvement in a murder. And how many concussions did PT cover up? Apparently enough for one exec to tweet that he can’t believe Paul T’s HOF nomination when he is the poster boy for concussion cover ups. How many careers were stalled or ended because of a bounty? How did Bill Belichick develop such a systematic cheating schemes? Roger Goodell is the only commission who has used his authority to hold teams and players accountable for there actions. And why has Roger used his authority? Because we the fans demanded it. Having the authority to make the game safer and to ensure fans that all teams will have an even playing field are two key elements of the commissioner’s job. To me it is better use the authority than not to use it.

  21. No. Putin wouldn’t allow anti-Russian protests at his sports events, as well as, celebration of hate groups by the athletes. Nice try though.

I may not be an Einstein or Stephen Hawking but I am far from a moron, by way of some proof I would point out I did not begin my post with name calling. Although his analogy strays into hyperbole within the confines of the subject matter Horn is by and large correct. If you believe that all 32 have a role in player punishment then I would suggest you are the ones who aren’t giving this enough thought. Goodell functions like a CEO with the owners functioning more or less in 2 distinct groups. There are several very involved owners that act akin to a board of directors and the rest are the equivalent of large shareholders. As long as the value of the stock continues to rise and it pays huge dividends then when it comes to handling the help, unless it becomes the equivalent of a major policy issue or creates a negative value impact, the ‘CEO’ is free to act in as heavy handed a method as he sees fit.

  24. Horn is such the intellectual. I’m sure he’s an expert on what’s going on around the globe. Horn should visit Russia and speak out against Putin. I wonder how cold it gets in Siberia.

  26. There are three of them in that office that should drive you nuts and they all have too much power. Pash is the nasty one with the brains. Goodell has the power and Kensil is a dope, but part of that unholy alliance. I’m not so sure the owners interfere with them too much as long as they’re bringing in cash. There are many of us who just don’t like what is going on in that office and don’t believe they are good for the game.

  27. I am not a Goodell fan, but guess what? The NFLPA made the deal, and now they can’t stand it. De Smith should be out apologizing for being such a buffoon instead of talking about power of the players. The owners hired Goodell to clean things up, so he’s making bold moves, many of which folks don’t like, including the owners. Goodell will be out in a couple years, laughing all the way to the bank.

Go away Joe Horn, no one wants to hear from a #3 wideout from 10 years ago.

    *******************

Come on man, Joe Horn is All Time, #63 in Receptions (just ahead of Sterling Sharpe), #68 in Receiving Yards (just ahead of John Stallworth), and made the Pro Bowl FOUR times.

Joe Horn is no Hall of Fame player, but he was WAY better than a #3 WR.

Which is why the owners cut him in for a slice of the pie. His job is to be the front man, take the heat from the players, fans and press while the owners slink out the back door in the brinks trucks. Then they deposit a huge direct deposit when the truck dumps off at the bank for old good Rog.

  30. Goodell should represent all 32 teams equally and fairly but that is not the case. Goodell is a Dictator that favors some teams over another. There are two factions of owners that are at war with each other. Call them old money vs new money. Goodells actions are all about keeping his job and not about being fair and neutral.

  31. A poor analogy. Putin is smart like a fox, constantly lying without anyone knowing it. Goodell is a buffoon, and is obviously lying every time he opens his mouth. And the Russian people love Putin. NFL fans and players hate Goodell.

  32. The funny part that less sophisticated fans seems to miss is that Joe Horn and ALL the other players gave Roger Goodell all that power with the Vlad Putin the Impaler clause in the CBE agreement they ALL signed on the dotted line for. It is a little hypocritical that Horn or any player should complain now when they didn’t complain those few years ago when they could have ACTUALLY done something. If they got a problem it is all on them.

  33. I know everyone hates Goodell, but at the end of the day, the players (or Player’s Association) gave him all the power he has in the collective bargaining agreement.

Next time the CBA is up for negotiation, don’t give him so much power.

  34. Players hate Goodell becuse they don’t want to be held accountable for their actions. Horn is angry because the NFL has a taunting rule. Well lets be honest, why do they have the taunting rule? Why did the NFL think it was necessary for these rules? And why were these rules passed and who voted for them? Roger Goodell could careless if players taunt one another. But apparently a huge majority of coaches and players have serious issues with it and how many players have been injured when the taunted team seeks retaliation. These players who get fined for taunting should be called out for it. They are playing professional football, a high five isn’t enough. Oh one more thing, how many players have been hurt during celebrations? That is why the NFL has these rules. Coaches and a majority of players wanted them.
