Kubiak on Siemian: “He’s made some poor decisions”

AP

Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian has three interceptions in his first two starts, and coach Gary Kubiak says those passes showed that Siemian has a long way to go in his decision-making.

Kubiak noted that Siemian still sometimes makes throws as if he thinks the opposing defenders have college speed. NFL defenders can intercept a pass that would have been out of a college defender’s range, and Siemian needs to learn that.

“He’s made some poor decisions,” Kubiak said, via ESPN. “I know that sounds kind of crazy, but it’s just learning that, ‘Trevor, That guy can make that play. You’re not in college anymore. You’re not going to throw that ball through that guy.’ I think some of the speed of the game factors that he’s beginning to understand a little bit is going to make him better each week.”

Kubiak is blunt, but he’s got a point: The Broncos are 2-0, but Siemian needs to make better decisions if they’re going to keep winning.

If Siemian doesn’t make better decisions, Kubiak may turn to rookie first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch. Kubiak showed last year that he wasn’t afraid to make changes at quarterback, from Peyton Manning to Brock Osweiler and back again. The Broncos also showed last year that to win with their defense, they don’t need great quarterback play, just adequate quarterback play. Siemian will have to cut down the mistakes if he wants Kubiak to view him as adequate enough to keep the job.

  1. Kubes keeping it real. You take away the 2 defensive TDS and throw on the should be pick 6 he threw, the Broncos would have lost last week. We don’t want to waste the greatest defense of all time because a QB can’t take care of the ball. He has to and will be better.

  2. And last year Manning threw 4 picks in ONE game. Earlier this week Sanders and Thomas threw Simian under the bus some as well. He’s no worse than the QBs the Broncos had last year.

  3. Ten year veterans make bad decisions all the time. Siemian has two NFL starts. Take all the HOF QBs and look at their first two career starts. The Broncos are undefeated with Siemian at QB. At this rate, the Broncos go 19-0 and win the super bowl. Then we’ll really hear some shoulda, woulda, coulda, from the folks who are jealous of Elway.

  4. The greatest defense of all time was the 1985 Chicago Bears. The 2016 Denver Broncos are not even close.

  5. Simian will never be good enough-the Donkeys are merely setting it up to yank him and put in Paxton. This kid never was never in their plans long term and is being used as a future scapegoat. Classless!

  6. I think the 2011/2012 49ers better than the 85 bears, and the 2002 Ravens better than the 49ers, and the 2015 Broncos better than the 02 Ravens….and the Seattle Seahawk 2013-2016 D thinks they are better than anybody. But they don’t cause turnovers…..and that’s a problem.

  7. You can already see the signs of implosion with this team. Super Bowl win, 2-0, and the diva players and coach are already setting up fall guys and shifting responsibility?

They should be thankful they have a decent QB after the way their entire QB situation fell apart offseason. They should be thankful for their situation. Instead, it’s whining and hedging bets and throwing players under the bus.

This has the makings of a flash in the pan, not a dynasty. Dynasties are team-first.

    Siemian made poor decisions?
Poor decisions never stopped or slowed down John Elway before.

John Elway as GM in last 5 years has assembled one of the greatest statistical offenses in history and one of the greatest statistical defenses in history, in SEPARATE seasons.

I’d say the GM is doing just fine.

I’m no Broncos fan, but I’ll never get why Elway still gets bashed to much. He built the team that just won the Super Bowl.

What Elway has done is amazing.

I just don’t know how they fit all those guys under the salary cap last year.

  11. This is crazy…its seems like there is pressure across the league for head coaches to “find” a reason to install the #1 picks, ready or not, deserved or not. LA, PHI, and DEN. Clearly PHI already said, “screw it, start him” and that’s worked out. Now it seems DEN is doing the same thing. LA? Heck, they can’t justify even dressing the #1 overall for the game, much less start him.

  12. Kubiak is the one making the bad decisions. He threw Sanchez under the bus because he clearly favored Siemain. Now Kubiak realized his mistake and Siemain is going under bus. Only one more to go, then what?

  13. This is Kubiak-speak for Paxton Lynch is getting better and will be starting soon. The time to impress is getting shorter for Siemian. We’ll know in a few weeks if he can handle it or not.

Lol. None of the defenses that you seem to think are inferior to the Donkeys defense would have let a team like the Browns take them to overtime, like the Donkey’s defense did last season.

  15. Love it. Just love it. Sometimes people have a argument that stands on shaky ground. But not so for many posters on here. No, they post from pure jealousy. Stupid comments about always making mistakes or regretting decisions. Or the favorite fall back for the 10 year olds, comments on someones looks. I…. JUST….. LOVE IT! World Champs chumps! World Champs.

  16. All you haters are so funny. Broncos have 5 division championships in a row. Two superbowls and one win. Flash in the pan? Try one of the best teams in te NFL since Elway took over. And the team this year looks better. Rest of the league is in trouble.

  17. Kid was never long term solution, Denver traded up to get their man in Lynch and he WILL be the starting QB at some point this season…..just a matter of when

  18. He might have 3 picks but only one was a bad decision and Butler still had to make an insane quick reaction play that was unreal.

Denver fans and more importantly the organization need to pump the brakes a little bit on the criticism here. Starting a 7th round qb should come with the expectation that there would be growing pains.

  19. Siemian is coming along fine. He’s been practicing against the best defense in the NFL his entire career. Learnings while winning is better than learning while losing. Everything is coming together. Running game, play action, establishing fullback, and the bootleg will become bigger part. Every week will be an improvement.

  20. Siemian has had two NFL starts. TWO! He’ll get better every week, and Kubiak knows this, other wise there would be a QB controversy in Denver right now, but there’s not. The Broncos take their historic sixth straight AFC West title in 2016, and Siemian will be their QB.

  21. The kid has heart, but he’s clearly a placeholder for Lynch. My bet is that Paxton starts at some point this season. Lynch is tailor made for a Kubiak offense. Jake Plummer was the perfect QB for a Kubiak offense and Lynch has better talent and a higher ceiling than Jake the Snake ever had (although Jake had a lot of chutzpah). Paxton showed it in preseason. I’d put money on Paxton starting for the Broncos in the playoffs.
