Everson Griffen shrugs off illness for three sacks

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen should get sick during a game more often.

On Sunday, Griffen temporarily exited the eventual win over the Panthers, was listed as questionable to return with an illness, and notched three total sacks.

I was sick, but I fight for my team,” Griffin said, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I love this game. I love the way we work. . . . We’re 3-0 and we got to keep it going, man. Winning is a lot of fun.”

Tight end Kyle Rudolph told PFT Live on Monday that Griffen fell victim to a combination of “bad food” and heat.

“I don’t know . . . what medicine they gave him, but they need to give me some because he came back and he was a monster,” cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said.

Rudolph said that Griffen was upset that he didn’t get a fourth sack on Carolina’s final offensive snap of the game, which resulted in Panthers quarterback Cam Newton throwing the ball up for grabs.

Even without the fourth sack of the game, Griffen has 4.0 sacks for the year, which puts him on pace for 21.33 — more than nine more than his career high of 12.0.

  1. I remember when there was some debate on whether or not the Vikings should move on from this guy or keep him around. Clearly they made the right call… dude is a straight beast and Zimmer has only made him even better.

  2. Everson is fantastic. It’s great knowing the DE position is locked down when B-Rob is out the door.

I also love how he is such a powerful, intimidating guy, and then your hear him talk with his big lisp. It’s like hearing Mike Tyson when he’s all pumped up. lol

  3. Griffin – 4th Round
    Hunter – 3rd Round
    Robison – 4th Round

And everyone is complaining that the Vikings mortgaged their future by trading a 1st for Sam Bradford.

    Silly rabbits…

  4. Whats funny is our lil sisters to the East fan base came on here laughing about signing Sack Daddy to his contract and letting J. Allen go. Weird drunken sconnies wrong again.

It doesn’t matter what the team or what the sport is, to me it’s always a bit suspicious of what medication has been given and who monitors that in game treatment.
As one who has had some devastating headaches in the past, some requiring a trip to the ER, I’ve always wanted to know what was given to Tyrell Davis during the SB vrs Greenbay. He started that game but sat out all of the 2nd qtr because of a headache. It being what it is, the biggest game of one’s career, a game where the majority of the players never even get to play in; and he has a headache so bad he can’t play anymore after his 1st qtr appearance. But after the half time ceremony is over, Tyrell comes out and plays lights out. I mean, he was a total beast. Man, there’s been some headaches I’ve gone through that I’ve prayed I could have something even 1/2 has strong as what he took during that half time.

  6. Vikings fans, just an outside opinion.. why even bother mentioning the packers any longer? They’re an irrelevant team and you’ve got bigger fish to fry.

  7. Not sure why this guy doesn’t get much credit from the national media. I really don’t care much. People that know football know he is a terror on the field. Just another example they focus on the east coast teams too often.

  8. People have been saying so far that the Vikings haven’t beaten a good team yet. After Sunday’s win in Carolina they can’t say that anymore.

  9. I’d say Griffen should make it three straight NFC players of the week for the Vikings. Very impressive performance by the whole defense. When you hold a team averaging 40 points a game at home to 10 points, you’re doing something right.

Let’s also give Xavier Rhodes and the rest of the secondary a lot of credit. First game back from a knee injury and he holds Kelvin Benjamin to zero targets. He makes a huge difference. Newton could have avoided a lot of those eight sacks if anyone had been open. Great team win.

  10. If I vomit once, I crawl into bed and cry softly. This guy goes out and dominates, goes to the sideline to vomit, comes back in and dominates some more. He’s certainly earning that big contract some people said he wasn’t worth when the Vikings let Jared Allen go.

Hmm.. For the life of me I just cut remember who won the MVP Award in 2015 and led his team to the Super Bowl??

  12. I think Clemmings was puking yesterday too — that field must have been a hazmat site by the end of the game.

  13. Forget Griffen, did you see Patterson yesterday?! One catches for eight yards! This guy is an all pro and should be owned 100% in fantasy leagues. You know you’re in trouble when Patterson is making plays.

The Vikings didn’t beat the Panthers, the Panthers beat themselves.

  15. Glad somebody brought up Patterson. He was a stud on special teams as a gunner. I can’t recall seeing him do that before. On his catch, he turned an almost certain loss into positive yards. Small steps I know, but it was a team win and he played a role.

  16. This season started wrong in every way possible, losing a few players that had our rivals to the east in glee with joy. We are going to remember this season for years to come, I cannot remember when I have been so calm during any games as this year. This is going to be a special year savor, each week and don’t look forward to any games take each as they come.Enjoy this ride no matter how it goes R-E-L-A-X
cause Zimmer has some magic in him to get the best out of all his players and then some. Skol Vikes

I think you mean the Panthers destroyed themselves. Whereas the Yotes beat the Bison.
