John Fox on Bears’ 0-3 start: “It’s frustrating”

Bears coach John Fox wasn’t happy after his team dropped to 0-3 with a loss at Dallas on Sunday night.

“This game’s only fun when you win. There’s not a whole lot of fun when you lose,” Fox said. “It’s frustrating. I’d rather be 3-0, but that’s not reality.”

Although Fox insisted that “We’ve got the right guys in that locker room,” he also noted that the Bears are playing shorthanded because of injuries.

“It’s not an excuse, but it is an excuse,” Fox said of the Bears’ injuries.

The Bears are, along with the Browns and Jaguars, one of only three 0-3 teams in the NFL. Chicago has been outscored by a total of 38 points, the worst mark in the league. This is looking like another frustrating season in Chicago.

  1. Well, coach, let me offer some advice for the upcoming offseason. It’s going to be a long one, since it started last night:

1.) What is it with picking the offensive line in September? Are you too busy in May?
2.) Stop wasting top 10 picks on projects and trading/discarding pro-bowl players
3.) You’re not very good at the whole timeout/challenge thing. Let’s fix that

Other than that, let’s call this season what it is… and let the kids play. Unrein doesn’t need to play another snap… and White obviously needs to play every single one from now on.

  2. Yeah, I understand we are rebuilding and everyone is frustrated and everyone loves a winner. I get that. However, the team seems to be simply going through the motions and the coach is morphing into Lovie Fox. If he says, “There’s plenty of football to be played” in today’s presser, then we will know for sure.

  3. It was frustrating for us fans too when you let Marshall, Forte, Peppers, Bennett, etc get away! We have clearly become the laughing stock of the NFL.. Chicago is too much of a blue collar city to have to watch this pathetic display of a football team. We need leadership and accountability… G.M Ryan Pace Sucks and John Fox does too….

  4. Obvious that the Bears are in the tanking mode but why do we need Fox to make the tanking also boring to watch. Marshall, Bennett, Forte, and Gould gone so the bottom line is better but fans couldn’t care less about that.

  5. I’m not a fan of in season trades, but Garoppolo to Chicago for a 1st and a second should be done as soon as Brady is eligible to play. That would allow Chicago to move ahead sooner and get a quarterback already in place for next year.

  6. Fox may have the right guys in the locker room but on the field, not so much.

You need good football players to compete and between injuries, inexperience and a lack of general athleticism, the Bears don’t have them. I see three possible wins on their schedule tops: Jags, Titans and Niners (although Blaine Gabbert solved Fangio’s D pretty handily last year so even that one isn’t for sure). So essentially, whether by design or circumstance the rest of 2016 is now preseason 2017 with the focus turning to player evaluation and (hopefully) development. I don’t fault any Bears fans who are deciding at this point to do better things with their time than keep watching this team, but if you do, pretending that this is mid August and not late September may help you keep your sanity.

  7. Bears are the worst team in the league and this is coming from a Niner fan. The fact that less than mediocre dallas beat them down is embarrassing. With the 1st pick of the 2017 NFL draft…………

  8. This team is terrible. I really hope that Fox and the rest of this staff are gone at the end of the year, because I really don’t trust them with whatever high pick we get. The team plays like they have no idea what’s going on or what to do, can’t tackle, and the offensive play-calling has been awful. They’re a complete embarrassment to the city and their fans.

  9. Bears need to lose out to get the number one pick. They should have played Clausen all last year and they’d already have a possible franchise QB.

  10. As a season ticket holder of these disappointing Bears this is Groundhog Day. I was convinced this team would be better than last year, but once again, nope. Unlucky with injuries and poor leadership is the hallmark of this once proud franchise, just sad.

Mike Ditka would be rolling around in his grave if he could see these Bears. Monsters of the midway? More like chipmunks.

Did Mike Ditka pass away in the last day or so? Otherwise, I’m sure Ditka is alive and well and did see these Bears.

  12. John Fox is a loser. Dude is the pinnacle of mediocrity. He would rather lose than put his foot on the throat of his opponent.

“Why are we practicing for noise, it’s not an away game”.

    – John Fox on Peyton Manning’s suggestion that they practice silent snap counts before SB 48 (the one that started with the snap going over Peyton’s head because the center couldn’t hear him).

  13. It’s a rebuilding year combined with a horrific rash of injuries early in the season. That’s a tough combo to overcome. I still liked what I saw out of Fox’s Bears last year to think he has them on the right track (long term).

That defense last year was the epitome of “greater than the sum of its parts” despite having serious talent issues. Fox is a solid coach.

They’ve got some big decisions to make moving forward with personnel, but as an outside observer, it still looks to me like the team is in good hands. Just gotta keep having good drafts and find a qb.

  14. There is so much to be disappointed with here, it’s hard to know where to start. But it’s time to focus squarely on GM Ryan Pace. We can not be experimenting with first round draft picks. As of today Pace is 0 for 2. Leonard Floyd was particularly disappointing last night, he was thrown around like a rag doll. Feels a little like Shea McClellin part deux. Pace was brought here specifically to fix draft issues. He is failing.

  15. It is not frustrating in the sense that Fox believes.
It is frustrating that Bear fans have to see the same conservative/constipated way of running this team year after year.
No attempt to leap over the Rams to draft Aaron Donald in 2014.
No attempt to leap over the Jets to draft Leonard Williams in 2015.
No attempt to move up to draft Carson Wentz in 2016.
No attempt to draft a QB with one of your three 4th round picks while Dallas takes Dak Prescott.
Pass on players like Laramie Tunsile and Vernon Hargreaves that fell into your lap and play positions that desperately need upgrades so you can draft a project in Leonard Floyd.
An old lady and her bumbling sons still calling the shots while their know nothing stooge Ted Phillips brokers a really bad stadium deal. (The Vikings new home just throws salt into that wound)

They won’t sell the team until Virginia dies if then and in the meantime they live off and sell the past to us fans. I don’t want to hear about 1985 or 1963 or the 1940’s anymore.
Butkus and Sayers and Payton and Singletary are long gone.
Cash in your billion dollars and change you inherited and go away so we can move on with building a real team again.

  16. The fact of the matter is this team is in full blown rebuild mode whether Fox, Pace, Phillips or the McCaskey’s want to admit it or not…time to call a spade a spade! The rebuilding process is not a fun one and might take 3 or 4 years which will be very hard to watch at times (like now) but the end result should be worth it so there’s no need to call for the head of Fox and Pace…it won’t do any good. Look, Pace inherited a roster full of un-athletic over the hill has-beens along with several years worth of poor drafts…the roster was a complete dumpster fire and overhauling that mess, installing a new defensive scheme and getting rid of the players that don’t fit or the over-priced veterans that wouldn’t be part of the Bears youth movement was the right thing to do.

It would have been worse to hold on to them…they weren’t building blocks for the future and holding on to them would have been an even more glaring sign of the Bears refusing to admit the obvious even to themselves that this team needed a complete rebuild and that would have hampered the process as they would have been just good enough to be mediocre and not make the playoffs but screw themselves out of the top draft pick they so desperately need!

The Cutler era will be over after this season as all of his guaranteed money comes off the books, no longer any excuses to hold onto a 33 year old QB who doesn’t make anyone else around him better (like a good leader does) OR even make himself better (keeps making basic fundamental mistakes that should have been corrected years ago) and just doesn’t seem to care whether the team wins or not!

Keep the faith Bears fans, it’s always darkest before the light…the team is on the right path it’s just going to take a little more time than originally planned.

  17. The McCaskey’s are the owners and Ted Phillips is the President, one need look no further to where the problems start and end. Halas Hall is filled with pure incompetence.

  18. The Browns are playing better than the other two and they have zero players….all their guys are rookies or back ups but Hue has then competing….Fox your days are over, it is apparent to all now why Elway let you go after reaching the SB….

  19. I have never missed a game, traveling overseas no problem, NFL.com streaming. Last night was the first time I changed to netflix to watch a reruns of MASH.

McCaskey’s have us for fools with this product they call Professional Football. No accountability on Monday mornings, EVER! No thanks, I’m done going out of my way.

And that’s the thing. When is the bottom finally in on this team? Each week this season so far I’ve thought they’ve gotten as bad as they can get, and the next week they’re worse. All that talk about the “easy schedule” the Bears would benefit from this year seems ludicrous right about now.

  21. So I guess Mama Bear is still pissed! She’ll go to her grave being pissed because as long as the McCaskey family owns this franchise, the Bears will remain non-contenders…they just don’t get it.

I’m with you sir…I switched over to the new season of Longmire on Netflix before halftime. This team is just not worth watching…they might not win a game this season!

  24. They dumped some decent players for salary sheds int he off season. They are waiting for Cutlers cut after this season.

Most people saw this was going to be a rough season in CHI. When Cutler went down, it got worse.

Trade any more assets you have for picks. Dump salaries. tank for a high pick.

The Bears have been rebuilding since 1986.

Yea because no one remembers Rex Grossman vs. Peyton Manning in the SB 10 years ago. Pretty sure the Bears were the NFC Champs that year.

  26. Just disband the franchise already. Start another team in a different city. We Bears fans have been through enough already. Usually I can be sarcastic and say “there’s always next year”, but honestly with this uninspiring bunch I think it may be at least 5 YEARS before they have a shot at being a contender.
