MRI confirms torn Achilles for Manti Te’o

AP

For a guy who entered the NFL as a bit of a sideshow, Manti Te’o had become a very solid player for the Chargers.

But at least for this season, that’s over.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, MRIs confirmed the Chargers linebacker suffered a torn Achilles and will be out for the season.

Te’o, their 2013 second-round pick, is in the final year of his rookie contract, and will now enter the market while rehabbing a serious injury. But it also leaves yet another hole for the Chargers, who are losing not just a player but someone who had become a leader.

After losing Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead and Stevie Johnson, the Chargers are rapidly running out of difference-makers on the field, and are 1-2 after yesterday’s loss to the Colts.

  1. Being an implant here in San Diego I would like to see the team do well. But geez how unlucky have they been this year. First KC comes in and steals a win, and then the Colts, and a lot of their key contributors are getting hurt for the season. Its a tough season for the Bolts when they desperately needed a good season.

  2. In before a 1000 jokes about his imaginary girlfriend..It was over 3 years ago maybe toss those out with the buttfumble jokes and find some new material rather than the same tired jokes.

Chargers are having a rough year with injuries.

  3. I said it before and I’ll say it again. It is time to look at the San Diego training staff. This year is not an aberration for injuries – look at years past, they always seem to have a ton of them.

Something the chargers are doing with regards to on-field player safety is not working.

Hate to break it to you but football is a violent sport which involves a bunch of hitting by extremely large and extremely fast men. A training staff is not going to prevent ligament and tendon tears.

  5. Unfortunately, this has become a weekly occurrence and as a Chargers fan, I’m just left wondering “Who’s it gonna be this week?”

While I agree with the previous comment that the Chargers training staff should receive some additional scrutiny, the fact remains that non-contact injuries such as this are up all around the NFL.

The common denominator is the artificial turf!
    Branden Oliver…Preseason in Minnesota…Non-contact Achilles tear….TURF
    Keenan Allen….Week 1 vs KC…Non-contact ACL tear….TURF
    Manti Te’o…Week 3 vs Indy…Non-contact Achilles tear…TURF

Woodhead’s ACL tear in Week 2 is the only exception, as he simply went down awkwardly on a tackle on grass

Fans of other teams can weigh in on what non-contact injuries your teams have dealt with on turf, but I can’t help to see the similarities here.

When will the NFL focus on player safety for issues other than head injuries, and really look into the issues that exist with these turf playing surfaces???

No offense, but being a Patriots fan I gotta agree somewhat with broncosguy. I don’t know the exact reason why, but for several consecutive seasons the Chargers have been decimated by injuries of every type at every position. Whether it’s karma or the actual weather is unknown. I remember them signing street free agents to start on the offensive line last year and this season seems no different.

If the same thing happens year over year, that’s called a trend, not freak accidents 🙂

  8. he is just another overrated product of the dame hype machine. he is not the player he was made out to be and no the gf jokes will never get old.

  9. People will now say he is made of glass etc….it is a shame he seemed
to be getting better at times…then only to disappear. The rate of injuries justs keeps increasing, but fans should not criticize the player,
especially where you see the work ethic like Te’o’s.

  10. Vegas odds for week 4’s season ending injury – Verrett +600, Mebane +350, Gordon +110, Gates -175.

No seriously as a die hard this is numbing. After last year and this year it’s almost expected. I don’t even react anymore I just expect it and wait for the collapse. Which always comes. Like death and taxes. I’ve picked a 2nd team to trot for because it’s the No Fun League when it comes to being a Chargers fan.
