J.J. Watt could miss rest of season with back injury

Football’s top defensive player could be done for the year.

Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt has re-injured his back and is expected to miss significant time, possibly the rest of the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

According to the report, the Texans are still gathering information about the injury, which he apparently suffered Thursday night in New England.

Watt was dealing with a back injury throughout the offseason, and after he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc, there were some reports over the summer that he might not be able to return in time for the beginning of the regular season. He has played all three games this year, but he hasn’t looked like himself.

Now the Texans may be looking at playing the rest of 2016 without the three-time NFL defensive player of the year. That would be a massive loss to the playoff hopes of the team that is currently leading the AFC South.

  1. As a Texan fan this sucks. He sold out and hosted too many tv shows an made too many commercials instead of doing his…you know….job.
Enjoy your money you’re not earning JJ.

  2. Par for the course. Get paid. Take a year off here or there. Act like it’s important. Whatever. We’re all suckas for buying into the NFL. I hope it goes under. For real.

  3. This is all on the coaches. They rushed him back way too fast. Everyone said this. Some one has some explaining to do to the fans.

Are you suggesting that Watt was injured making a TV show?

  5. I don’t understand why so many people don’t like watt. Anyways I hope u have a full recovery jj. I wouldn’t wish an injury on any player well except maybe cam Newton last year after he did a 5 minute dance after scoring a td.

  6. Back issues aren’t a joke trust me I’ve been dealing with mine for going on 7 years. His career is over , I can almost guarantee it. That isn’t a part of the body that can take repeated poundings and not cause lifelong damage

  7. All that HGH has screwed up his spine. hA! Well let’s hope he invested his money well. Bill O Brien is a moron. Now that the NFL has a team in LA, it’s probably time to shut down Houston and Jacksonville and let their talented players find new homes in habitable NFL cities. . Stan Kroenke leveled that fat bald redneck’s chi who owns the Texans. How has opposing the Rams move worked out for him and Jerry Richardson worked out this year?

  8. He won’t miss the rest of the season without some kind of espn special that he gets to talk to the doctors, get a voice over part in which he gets to tell what he was thinking WHILE the doctors were talking to him, and THEN makes the move to shut it down for the rest of the year.

ESPN will call this, the decision part two. Jim Gray will probably be in charge and the end will be a live decision in which a tearful Watt agrees to go on IR for the rest of the year.

For part 3 of the decision, ESPN /Jim Gray will interview the Colts GM and Coach about the epic decision to hang their AFC finalist game banner. While the rest of the league laughs at them.

  9. Made of glass …weak …that’s what fans will say. When will the NFL
and Mr. Goodell finally get serious about player health?
What is wrong with lengthening the season to allow teams days off
before a Thursday night game? Make the season 20 weeks. Eliminate
2 exhibition games ….spread it out by starting a week or two early and then play 16 games. Allow two bye weeks. This allows for players to
recover properly. Another factor never mentioned is the time between
plays, if the league is serious about player safety, the time between plays should be increased.
Bottom line all Goodell cares about is revenue. That means player
safety comes up a distant priority.

  10. I’m sorry to hear about the injury Texans fans. JJ is truly a joy to watch. Speedy recovery to JJ.

  11. Uh Von Miller is the best defensive player around…No team can contain him, including the same Patriot squad that made Watt look like an undrafted canadian free agent…

  12. Disc injuries are re ocurring. He could be done as we know him. Maybe his best days are done. It takes your strenght, its painful and renders you helpless. Tying your shoes hurt. Eating breakfast hurts. Good luck watts.

Bilicheck likes to take your best weapon out of the game. Looks like he succeeded.

BB doesn’t try to injure opponents. Just beat them.

  14. Bill O’Brien accomplishments:

Yelled at Tom Brady, causing a stir on social media.

Coached with Patriots, conned a team into believing he’s Head Coach Material.

Won 9 games with no QB.

Won 9 games with no QB, again. Exposed in playoffs.

Sent a newborn baby and millions of dollars to Mr. Brock Osweiler to play QB. Still has no QB.

Rushed back his ego-fueled, HOF bound defensive end so he could only play 3 games.

I feel bad for Texans fans.

  15. I wish he had taken the proper amount of time to heal. Now he just looks like some meathead who wanted to prove he could beat the standard recovery period.

  16. Damn, back injuries can be fickle one minute and the next it’s “shouldn’t play again” so who knows? This is bad news for the Texans fans and fans of other teams who enjoy the competitive nature of the gridiron with everyone healthy on Sundays. Hopefully Watt will get things right after time offf potentially more surgery, rehab and rest.

If player safety really matters, drop the Thursday night games”

    —-

I second that. Get rid of Thursday games. Ridiculous and everyone knows it. This transparent greed on the part of exceedingly rich owners is ugly, ugly, ugly.

  18. Well a flash in the pants, done, done, done. This is a career ending type of injury, a couple of good years for a go nowhere team, will be insignificant in the history of football…bye bye JJ.

  19. Like i said after the game, he got run over by Gronk and another OL early in the game and never was the same, disappeared in that game…..

  20. Came back too soon.
Self pride and ego can sometimes hurt you more than the actual injury itself. Rest up JJ. Come back next year healthy. I’m not a Texans fan but you are fun to watch.

  21. In an interview with Graham B, shown a week or so ago, JJ mentioned he thought of retiring during the offseason since rehab was so difficult. Hope he gets well soon. Maybe Adam can get his medical records.

  22. Not a Texans fan but hate to see this. We’re watching history being made every time Watt plays.

Wondered from the start though if this was going to happen after that back injury this summer and thought it might be wise for the Texans to shut him down the first few weeks of the season to make sure he was 100%.

As I’m sure many people on this thread know, backs are dang tricky things and take a lot of time to heal after a problem.

  23. Are they going to fine the player who caused the injury?
    Why not?
It’s a fine happy league for guys who do things on purpose or not.
Even for small stupid infractions that do not have the potential cause any harm to anyone.

  24. Amazing how it looks like just one player can have the impact of the whole team.
Isn’t this supposed to be a team sport?
Couldn’t the rest of the players manage and win without JJ?

  25. As a Texan fan this sucks. He sold out and hosted too many tv shows an made too many commercials instead of doing his…you know….job.

Are you suggesting that Watt was injured making a TV show?

you can’t be in the gym or on the field conditioning when your shooting tv commercials.

    thats what he’s suggesting & he’s 100% correct

  26. He has played all three games this year, but he hasn’t looked like himself.
    ———————————————————
In the game against New England, Watt was a non-factor, as he usually is against them ….. so yeah, he DID look like himself.

  27. He should have started the year on IR, especially considering he had setbacks. You could tell through the first 3 games he’s playing at 60%. A lot of this falls on the Texan’s higher-ups.

  28. That obviously sucks for Watt and Texans fans but also for all football fans. I’m an NFC East fan and enjoy seeing Watt on TV and highlights. The guy is a phenominal (sp) player, all effort type, very fun to watch

  29. Anyone who has ever had a herniated disc would know that he came back too soon.

Never understood the rush to get a player back who would only be 75% full strength. At the NFL level – even a superstar who is hurt becomes “just a guy” when playing against healthy players.

  30. A loss for non-Texans fans too…….I enjoyed watching him play even though I care zilch about the Texans winning anything.

  31. JJ was obsessed with keeping his consecutive games played streak intact and it cost the Texans big time.

  32. How did Watt hurt himself?
    Did he do something?

His last 5 games against the Pats….I haven’t even seen him!
(Except flexing on the sidelines when he knows that the camera is on him).

If this poser played in any division besides the AFC South he would be considered extremely average.

See, this kind of trolling is constant for Watt and I don’t understand where it comes from. Is it just jealousy? Or just trying to be noticed?

If you honestly think he’s average, you’re clueless. Ask Aaron Rodgers. Ask Andy Dalton. Ask any other QB – heck even ask Brady who may not have been sacked in their last game by Watt but Watt hit him multiple times – ask all of them how “average” he is. Ask the coaches that gameplan soley on stopping one player how “average” he is.

  34. This thing could be career ending. I hope not but once a back is blown, it’s never the same. He’s HOF already in my book.

  35. 50% of the blame is on Watts shoulders for not checking his ego at the door and thinking he’s superman and the other 50% is on the GM and coaching staff for letting him play so early. Any first year orthopedic resident could have told you it was completely ridiculous to think you could start an NFL game 8 weeks after having a disk removed in your back. As frustrated as I get with the Chiefs at least they had the common sense to keep Jamal Charles and Justin Houston out the line up until they are healthy enough to play.

  36. Lots of respect from Pats fans and others for Watt in this thread. He’s earned it despite silly “me” commercials. No shame in being neutralized by BB and his team! He does it to lots of players.

Good news is they beat the lowly Chiefs who are heading for last in the AFC West!

    Good luck JJ!

What does it say about Brady playing 6 games every year against the Jets, Dolphins and Bills? And Pats still not missing a beat with their backups?

See? It can go both ways.

Exactly ! Its hard to walk through a grocery store let alone get beat on for an hour every Sunday . It also means that he more than likely he ruined whatever surgeons did to his back. I feel bad for the dude but he had a voice in this he should have spoke up and put his ego aside
