Report: Jimmy Garoppolo will start Sunday

As Tom Brady concludes his four-game suspension on Sunday, Jimmy Garoppolo will return to the helm of the Patriots’ offense.

Garoppolo will start Sunday against the Bills, WEEI reports.

After playing very well in the first game and a half of the season, Garoppolo suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder during the Week Two game against the Dolphins and sat out Week Three against the Texans. Jacoby Brissett started against Houston but suffered an injury of his own, to his throwing thumb.

Both Garoppolo and Brissett are officially listed as questionable for the game. Brady will return to the team when his suspension ends on Monday.

  1. Yes!!! He’s no Tom Brady, but this dude is so fun to watch. He has the quickest release in all of football – and it’s not even close! Doesn’t even look like he has a backswing at all when he commits and slings it in there. Gives DB’s no chance to jump on his routes. Dude is really fun to watch. Again, I can’t wait for Brady to return because of his HOF decision making – but Jimmy’s mechanics and release are even better than Brady and Rodgers that it makes this team so fun to watch!!! Go Graps!

  2. Jimmy is a G for sure. Pull out this W and it’s the ultimate double-bird to Goodell and his cronies, and the salty owners out there like Irsay, Bisciotti, Jerry Jones, etc. Need the Pats to absolutely steamroll everyone from now through February. Can’t wait to hear what “scandal” they come up with next to try to make sense of this.

I’m curious about ‘nice schedule too’.

They’re 3-0 against a schedule that includes 2 playoff teams from last year.

In comparison the Seahawks are 2-1 but haven’t played a playoff team. Now that’s a nice schedule.

Yeah, after suspending Brady taking picks & $ over a pack of lies he gifted them a cake schedule that just happens to include the SB champs at Mile HiGH and Pittsburg at the Pickle. what a nice guy!

isn’t there a bridge under which you need to hide?

You haters are endlessly amusing. You claim that the Pats are done when Brady was suspended for 4 games. Someone else was taking the AFCE. Pats go 3-0, and suddenly, well, they had a nice starting schedule lololol.

The NFL set that up precisely because Brady wasn’t there. These 3 home games (plus the supposedly SB contender Cards to start them with a loss out of the gate) gave those 3 teams the best chance they had to win against the Pats at home (because they definitely weren’t winning once Brady was back), and they aren’t doing their job (unlike BB and the Pats…).

So instead of you crowing about how the Pats are 1-3 or 2-2 and losing in their division, now you completely flip and say the NFL gave them the easy schedule to get them through it.

The sheer disconnection from reality you have to have to do these mental gymnastics just makes me laugh.

    And pity you.

    But mostly laugh.

  7. Sounds like a great target for the Bills, who have the 3rd most sacks in the league so far. Of course thats about the only stat they are doing good at…

  8. Oh man! Why did you let the Bills know? Now the Bopsy Twins are going to send the Ohio State tape on Edelman playing quarterback back and probably won’t pay for it.
Can’t anyone keep a secret anymore?
Oh well, there goes any hope of the Patriots surprising the Bills with a win tomorrow. Why does everyone have to put my Patriots at a disadvantage? Isn’t it hard enough that you hate them? Why do you also have to be so mean?

There, that was for all the haters out there who believe all Patriots fans are whiners. I thought I would avoid the rush and get the complaining started early.

  9. We all wonder about the back up Q.B.s to our team’s starters, so it was a short lived rehearsal for Jimmy G. but also a better than expected one. So what happens to him after Tom Brady is back under center? The Patriots have options now they did not have during the summer when worries about how many games could they win without Brady. The worst they can do now is 3 and 1. I wonder if Roger Goodell feels good now about his pound of flesh subtracted from the Patriots. I don’t think anyone saw this scenario unfolding. I know I didn’t. I’m amazed at how good the rookie Q.B.s have been this NFL this early season with the Cowboys, Broncos, Eagles, and the Patriots. I’ve never seen anything like it before. These guys all look like the real deal but want to see a few more Bronco games before I include him with others, but he’s holding his own at this time. Brissett looks pretty damn solid also.

  10. .
Let’s take a look at the results of Roger Goodell’s plan to unjustly punish the Patriots in order to bring parity to the AFC and give his favorite perennial doormats, the Jets, their only possible opportunity to get to a Super Bowl. So far the Patriots are 3-0 and favored at home vs Buffalo to make a clean sweep of the games for which Brady was suspended. Meanwhile :

QB #1- Tom Brady returns tanned, rested and ready to compete at a high level.

QB #2- Jimmy Garopollo is about one more solid start from making himself a huge payday. After a good outing on Sunday, Garopollo may find teams offering him Cousins / Osweiler money, but only after paying the Patriots price for him.

QB #3- Jacoby Brissett performed admirably, under tough conditions and a national TV audience. Despite obvious rookie rawness, he showed that he has potential, if properly developed. It’s now unlikely that the Patriots will have any reservations about moving Garopollo.

So there’s the results of the masterminds of Goodell, Pash, Gardi, Blandino, Vincent, Kensil, Henderson, Wells, and company. As, Boston reporter, Tom Curran said, ” it looks like the league bought their framegate plans from ACME . ”

  12. I see Hogan & Blount having big games here… Probably Eddelman/Dola &?Bennet too
I expect the Bills to try & blitz the heck out of him & that will be their major mistake as Jimmy will get the ball out fast & once the D gets tired that’s when Blount will run thru & over them

  13. TREMENDOUS news for the 4 time World Champions! 🙂

The showcase continues and needy teams will be lining up with their offers for JG this winter. First rounder? Or could it be even MORE than just that? A bidding war? WOW! The possibilities are absolutely scrumptious!

    🙂

  15. Don’t feel bad Bills 🙂 What JG will do to you tomorrow is nothing compared to what the GOAT Qb will do to the Browns.

    🙂

  16. Easy Schedule? Two playoff teams and two division opponents. If you really want to set it up for someone else to win the AFCE, that’s how you do it. The Bills still will only have to play one game against Brady. Tomorrow they get to put two injured backup QBs in their sights. Face it, the Patriots are just better than your teams. Haters.

    ————————————-

Awww you till mad bro? Too obsessed with finding a left handed compliment to see the irony of a shehawks fan posting that? A 2 point victory over the mighty fish in your own house, a loss to the Rams and a beating of the hapless Niners led by none other than the Not So Great Gabbert and you are commenting on a 3-0 team’s .583 strength of schedule versus your 2-1 teams .375?

I know 12’s are new to this but let’s try one more time. The scheduling formula put together in ’92 decides who a team is going to play and even where they are playing, only the when is subject to adjustment. Goodell’s boys would have been hard pressed to do much better when it came to screwing NE than having them open on the road against the team favored to win your division in a night game, send them cross country and set up miami with a chance to steal one in NE then have an inexperienced QB go up against what should have been a top 5 D on a short week followed by a giving another division opponent a shot at taking one in Gillette. NE is tough to beat in Gillette, by making sure they played almost as many games as possible there without Brady the league did their damndest to maximize the impact. Potentially a conference loss to the team they might lose a home field playoff tie breaker to and 2 division losses to teams that could not otherwise have stood a chance in Foxboro.
    Nice try cupcake.

NFL scheduling is done years in advance and on a rotation basis…Example: AFC E hosts/plays at NFC W…This is the setup by the NFL, not NE, not Denver, etc…

And coming from a fan of a team that’s had 3 cupcakes on their schedule to start, that same team should be 1-2 if not for a dropped TD pass by a wide open Miami receiver…

I don’t think the Atriots have cheated once. If you feel they have done something to give them an unfair advantage I’d love to hear it.
But don’t give me taping signals which its been proven and admitted that every team has and still does this, and don’t give me deflategate which has been without a doubt debunked by simple 3rd grade science.
In addition, if we’re talking about “cheating” tell us who you support so we can have a good discussion, because if you’re claiming the Patriots are “cheaters” then surely you’ve done the legwork to prove no infractions by your team or you’d be a hypocrite. Go ahead, your turn.

1 thing you didn’t mention: The 1st and 4th penalty, while definitely a negative, could very well have been a bust, costing millions. These funds can now go to extending proven winners and giving 2 other players a chance on a roster that has little room.

You’ve got some catching up to do…There was no cheating, even some of us who don’t like NE, have come to the realization that the NFL setup NE, the NFL lied, all because of a few owners who felt that NE was making a mockery of the system know as PARITY, and/or they just want to pocket their money and the heck with their team and fans, I don’t know.

IMO the bottom line is this: the Patriots are a smart organization, they have great coaching and scouting, and probably the best reason they’re so good is that they just work harder than every other team.

Funny how that works. Arizona can’t be a “Super Bowl favorite” when New England beats them then all of a sudden be “overrated” when Buffalo blows them out.

They couldn’t realistically trade Brady even if they wanted to (not that they should anyway)

His cap hits nearly triple if he doesn’t play out his contract. IE: One season’s hit with him on roster: like 13-14M With him cut or traded: Like 32-33M

Brady will play out the contract either way.

    1 DT- Kyle Williams
3 LB- Brown, Brown & Hughes
    3 CB- Gilmore, White(Darby) & Robey-Coleman
    4 S- A.Williams, Graham, D.Williams & Blanton

This D will challenge the Patriots to run heavy with Blount or play catch with 7 DB’s… Buffalo will line their CB’s tight to the Patriot receivers and put their Safeties in position to help with coverage, blitz or stop the run. The Bills stifled the Cardinal’s high-powered passing offense with these type of packages… Johnson was able to break a few decent runs and score a couple of TD’s, but Fitzgerald & company was shut down. Garoppolo will be challenged this week, that’s for sure!

  55. Goodell’s plan has backfired wildly.

He had them open in Arizona, thinking it would their first loss and then he threw Miami a bone by having them play in NE in the warm weather without Brady. Whoops!

And then, he forced the Pats to play a short week without Brady against a supposed playoff contender in the AFC in Houston, where a 3rd string QB calmly slipped in and helped slap the Texans around again.

And now, another bone thrown to another AFC E team to try to catch NE with a loss at home without Brady, so Goodell could attempt to get these AFCE rivals a sweep, eventually playing at home later in the year, but with Brady under Center.

    LMAO

Didn’t work, Rogie. And now, there’s hell to pay when the Pats get healthier and get Brady back starting next week in Cleveland.

The cherry on top is knowing Brissett can be be developed from here and the Bears will likely give up a 1st and 4th rounder for JimmyG, which will recoup the stolen draft picks under the greatest fake scandal in sports history, “Deflategate”.

  57. This is a very important game for Jimmy G.

He knows it’s a continued audition for the highest bidder. I don’t believe that the Patriots will be able to keep him. There are too many teams out there willing to overpay for any graduate of the Belichick/Patriot system and we’ve seen it time and again with players and coaches.

I think that the Patriots love Brissett’s upside much more than we think and are fine with developing him over the next few years until Brady declines enough to warrant the switch.

If we’re extremely lucky, Brady plays out his contract through 2020 (age 43) at a high skill level, but with all due respect to Brady thinking he’ll play “10 more years”, we’ve never seen anyone do it before, so we’d be way off into uncharted territory there.

When Belichick summons Brady to the office one day, he’ll throw sentiment out the window.

Let’s take a look at the results of Roger Goodell’s plan to unjustly punish the Patriots in order to bring about parity………
1 thing you didn’t mention: The 1st and 4th penalty, while definitely a negative, could very well have been a bust, costing millions. These funds can now go to extending proven winners and giving 2 other players a chance on a roster that has little room.
    ===========================
Good point. Which again proves that the Patriots never cheated. They are just way better than any other franchise in the NFL at every aspect of the game. And you can’t do anything about it. They are going to beat you anyway.
The absolutely only reason the Patriots haven’t won the last 15 SuperBowls is because the NFL playoffs are all sudden death. If that was changed to 2 out of 3, the Patriots would win every year. And now, everyone knows it.

  59. Fans of the 4 time, convicted cheaters are acting like this will be a cakewalk against the bills. But if you compare apples to apples, the only common opponent the bills and cheaters have had this year is the cardinals. The cheats needed a missed FG to pull off a fluke win, while the bills dominated the Cards from start to finish and won by 15 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
I’m sure belli-cheat has something up his sleeve for Rex and will probably manipulate the rulebook (again) and then claim he misinterpreted the rules (again), but I see the bills winning this game by 10+.
Now all you chowds can respond and call me a hater, but cheaters gonna cheat

Well, the Pats don’t really draft “busts”, at least in the 1st rd.

Easley was released likely because he wasn’t taking his rehab seriously and they realized they erred, and didn’t want a bad choice of keeping him, to possibly be a factor in the locker room. A bad pick for NE, but Easley doesn’t suck.

It’s not like a NY Jetsesque kind of a 1st d bust pick.

The Pats don’t have that kind.

Also, with the rookie cap, the cost of rookies is far less than what it used to be, pre 2011.

So, Goodell stealing our draft picks again over a myth, is very painful and real.

No one has drafted better since 2010, when it became obvious the owners would get a rookie cap as their priority during the 2011 CBA negotiations, which Goodell was a failure at, across the board. He had to be removed from the proceedings.

So, make no mistake: Keeping costs down, a healthy cap, with BB doubling down in the first 3 rounds of the draft, having 2 picks per round in 2010, 2011 and 2012, is why this team is so loaded right now.

They went out and rented 1 big name FA for only year (Revis), stayed healthy an won it all in 2014.

But, Goodell knows why BB, the greatest GM ever is successful, over many other franchises. It’s the drafting and developing within what they want.

    They want this:

    1. High football IQ and drive to be better.
    2. Maturity

No other franchise values these elements in a prospect MORE than NE. Period. End of story.

That is a VERY big reason why the Spygate and Deflategate lies exist.

If Goodell can sell those as being sinister acts, no one questions why the punishments are so severe.

Goodell knows BB loves him some draft picks.

EVen BB using draft picks to cultivate QB talent, so save 4-5 mil per for a backup QB he’ll likely never use, is utter genius, because the chances of him flipping the player for some kind of an additional pick, is always there.

Now, with Goodell suspending Brady, committing consumer fraud off of a proven lie, it’s actually setting things up beautifully to showcase Jimmy G, to recoup the 1st and 4th that was stolen.

I would not be shocked at all if Goodell creates a new rule that says “The Patriots cannot trade back up QBS for draft picks”, this offseason.

It would be par for the course for Goodell and the corrupt cronies on Park Ave.

The simpel fact is this: BB is so great as a GM and coach, he’s slowly killing the NFL. The owners know this, hence the cheating on Park Ave towards the Pats.

    Truth.

  62. I don’t understand the “easy schedule” comments at all… In fact I find them pretty funny as they show how ignorant most of you out there really are…
The schedule is on a rotating format & for the most part is predictable as to what divisions of each conference is played years in advance… That, combined with the fact the ALL TEAMS PLAY THEIR OWN DIVISION TEAMS TWICE & that how teams finish in their division dictates the remainder of the teams they play to fill out their schedule makes this discussion moot…
The FACTORS that do act is a variable are WHEN TEAMS play each other over the course of the season along with Bye weeks & shortened weeks due to Monday or Thursday games….
Why certain people can’t grasp that REALITY is beyond me…

These pats fans think they already won SB 51, not going to happen the way that offensive line is playing, Brady is going to end up getting hurt just like these other guys….

No, most Pats fans recognize that division games can always be dogfights, and that 3-1 or 4-0 wins you nothing. Mostly we are celebrating the fact that in spite of Goodell and 30 of the other 31 organizations conspiring to unjustly steal draft picks from the Pats, and steal 4 games from Tom Brady, the Greatest NFL Player of All-Time, the Pats will still at the very least be 3-1 on Monday at 12:01 AM, and in first place in the division, when the Greatest NFL Player of All-Time rejoins the Pats.

And we know that is driving Goodell, Vincent, Pash, Kensil and all of the rest of the Pats haters absolutely nuts. We are loving that!

Rex Ryan is the man that is going to cost Rex Ryan his job.

  65. Make absolutely no mistake about it…. THE NEXT SCANDAL CREATED BY THE LEAGUE & PRESS AGAINST THE PATRIOTS WILL BE DONE TO GET BB SUSPENDED FOR A SEASON….stealing picks & suspending franchise players hasn’t worked so the final outlet is to go after the GM & COACH to try to create some form of perceived parody in the league….
All else has failed so FRAMING BB for SOMETHING is the next step…. My guess will be the planting of a bug in a visitors team locker room or something on that format would have to be done to make the COACH look guilty & the suspension justified, & let’s face it the PRESS as well as the fans of other teams distaste for Bill will be all too willing to further fuel the LEAGUES AGENDA…..watch & see

Tee hee 🙂 If I can be completely honest I think it’s kind of silly to say they’ll win by 10+ since they will be lucky to even score double digits at all.

    Rob Johnson > Tyrod Taylor

    🙂

  67. Sounds like spiller time slept through 7th grade science, or probably hasn’t had it yet! Science proves there was no tampering!
    Go,Pats !!

  68. No surprise here. 2 weeks of rest, he should be ready. Good start for NE. Nice schedule too.

    —-
Indeed a good start. The schedule is what it is.

I’m not all that impressed with the AFC to be honest and can’t think of any reason why the Patriots won’t be at or near the top once again.

  69. Goodell might as well hand the Pats a get into playoff free pass

    —-

Excellent idea! I hope it’s framed and laminated.

    🙂

  70. Tyrod Taylor reminds me of JP the Loss Man 🙂 Seriously he does! 🙂 Same kind of QB, with almost exactly the same deficiencies.

Only the Bills would drop Drew Bledsoe for a stiff with a last name of “Loss Man”! 🙂 Yep. Only the Bills.

    🙂

  71. If healthy, Jimmy Garoppolo should continue to start until he struggles. He has done nothing to lose the job so far. A QB in this system just executes plays given to him by the offensive coordinator and Belichick and Garoppolo has shown he is perfectly capable of doing that.

As someone pointed out, the schedules of all teams are based on a system and are not arbitrary.

And in case you missed it, Goodell has been working to try to make the Patriots lose:

    Examples:

Denying the science which proves that footballs lose PSI when they get cold and even more if they are also wet.

Orchestrating and marketing a year long smear campaign using the national media.

Telling numerous lies: “56 deflategate lies”.

Abusing the court system to perpetuate the deflategate farce.

Using all the things listed above to take both a 1st and a 4th round draft pick away from the Patriots.

Also using those things above to force Tom Brady to miss 25% of the 2016 season.

Continuing to keep the PSI information that was collected during the 2015 season secret because it would show everyone that footballs lose PSI when they get cold and even more if they are also wet.

    Except its not a system.
Tom Brady has adapted to playing with different teammates and offensive coordinators across 16 years.
Tom Brady adapts to a different game plan that is created for each game to exploit the weaknesses of the opponents defense based on who is playing for the Patriots that day. Sometimes the game plan doesn’t work as desired and he changes the plan during the game.

The Dolphins have a system and that’s why they continue to lose. They keep doing the same thing over and over even if it doesn’t work.

Trolls need an excuse for everything. Beating one of the NFC Super Bowl favorites on the road week one with the second string QB, no Gronk, no Ninkovich is the take away. Enjoy.
    ________________________

But when the Bills beat the same team by a lot more and don’t have to rely on a missed fg for the win, and are missing Watkins, Dareus, Glenn, Darby, Lawson, and Ragland all of a sudden the win was a fluke and Arizona is overrated. Funny how that works. Arizona can’t be a “Super Bowl favorite” when New England beats them then all of a sudden be “overrated” when Buffalo blows them out.
    ———————
I don’t recall anyone saying that about the Bills, but would you blame them if they did?

Patriots have the 9th most difficult schedule based on last season’s records, time will tell about this season.

  78. The bigger question is, when Brady returns, will he be the same? Tom is no longer a young QB and although he played very well last year, when the switch goes off it goes off suddenly. Ask Peyton Manning.

  79. Judging from the overall comments about 90% of posters now agree that Deflategate etc was a false narrative by “The Shield” designed to bring parity back to the AFC. However it turns out that the Patriots simply outplay, outwork and outsmart most of their competitors. In realtity there are only about 8 teams that consistently are in the hunt for the SB every year. Now, as to the 10% of the posters still use words like “Cheaters”…..Usually the ratios are 20% haters/ 20% supporters and /60% who just don’t care. So to be in the low 10% of the demographics you just have to be incredibly stupid.

And that’s exactly the point that all you “Brady plays in a system” advocates miss. The long term success the Patriots have enjoyed began when Brady joined the team and more specifically, when he and Belichick started working together. Collectively, they are the most successful coach/player pairing since 2000. And it wasn’t because Brady fit in Belichick’s system. There wasn’t one then and there isn’t one now. Unless of course you want to say that not having a system is a system.
They have been successful together because they have a similar passion for winning by out maneuvering their opponents. They did that together by studying the game each from their unique perspectives at a level that no one else does. You put them together and they are the atypical couple you sometimes read about that can finish each other’s thoughts.
Brady has a shorter career than Belichick which is always the case when you have a great coach. But it’s still longer than other quarterback while still playing at an elite level. So it’s obvious that Brady and Belichick have worked together over the years to develop a variable approach that works. With Brady, Belichick could vary the game plan any way he needed to and it worked. Once Brady is gone, you can bet that New England will do whatever they need to get a replacement of similar character.
So that’s not a system QB. That’s an elite QB that has no peer. For those of you familiar with hockey, Brady is the Wayne Gretzky of the NFL. He was the best and he changed the game forever.

I’m curious about ‘nice schedule too’.

They’re 3-0 against a schedule that includes 2 playoff teams from last year.

In comparison the Seahawks are 2-1 but haven’t played a playoff team. Now that’s a nice schedule.
    ——–
Playoff teams? Texas, at home, with no QB on Texas? Seriously you jest. That’s your standard?

Seattle beat on the road, against one of the best defenses in the NFL, AFTER Russell Wilson is playing injured, and shouldn’t be playing at all.

Seattle is always a slow start…every year. And doesn’t have the privilege of playing in the AFC North annually, with the Jets, Buffalo, and Miami. Lucky NE…better to be lucky than good. Let’s see if TB fares better playing that Denver D better than last year. But at the end of the day, Seattle has as many SB victories as NE in the past 10 years…and no snow victory games setting an NFL precedent “tuck” rulings favoring them moving forward to be in position to win their first SB. Lucky NE, again.

  83. OCgunslinger, you are wrong. Overall, over 80% of football fans believe Tom Brady’s punishment was deserved. Many feel the punishment was fair, others believe it was too light. Roger Goodell did the right thing and punished him for his lies and his failure to cooperate. Nobody who knows football ever expected the Patriots to fall apart and lose games because Brady was suspended. Bill was prepared for his suspension just like he would be prepared if Brady went down for injury. His punishment had nothing to do with parity, it had nothing to do with making the Pats lose. He was punished for what he did.

There was testimony entered into the court record from the other side that stated that Brady did cooperate. Just because many fools believe that someone should turn over personal property to an entity that has no right to it, doesn’t make them right.
Just because many fools believe that in America a person must prove that they are innocent by turning over personal property, doesn’t make them right.
The NFL didn’t want the phone. They just used it as a red herring to dupe gullible people.

The NFL leaked personal information that Brady provided form his phone logs so that Brady wouldn’t trust them with the phone. So the could play that card and dupe gullible people.

JG will not be traded. Anyone who says that does not understand how rare it is to have two successful quarterbacks back to back.

    ———–

Nothing is set in stone with Belichick. He’s very good and he’s arrogant. It is rare to have 2 successful qb’s back to back, but who’s saying that Garoppolo is successful? He’s Brady all of a sudden? He’s essentially had one great half against the Dolphins–what does that even mean? The sample size is too small.

As usual in Patriot land, it will come down to “all factors considered” and one of them will be money. If you lock him up now, you get him cheaper, but Jimmy G knows that if Brady stays healthy and productive, he can get a boatload of dough on the open market and ensure that he’ll be a starter somewhere in 2018 if there’s not a chance of it in NE.

I still think that the development of Brissett is going to enter into the picture and be a factor in this decision down the road. They like him a lot and the timing with him taking over would work better unless Brady declines suddenly during this year or the next.

  88. JG will not be traded. Anyone who says that does not understand how rare it is to have two sucessfull quarterbacks back to back.

Garoppolo has 5 1/2 quarters of meaningful NFL experience. Needs a lot more than that before anyone starts calling him a successful quarterback.
