Running back Chris Johnson was having an impressive season for the Cardinals in 2015 when a fractured tibia sent him to injured reserve.
Johnson moved into a backup role after re-signing with the team this year, but he’s wound up in the same place. The Cardinals announced on Tuesday that they have placed Johnson on injured reserve due to the groin injury he suffered in last Sunday’s loss to the Rams.
Johnson ran 25 times for 95 yards and a touchdown in his four games with the Cardinals this season. Johnson is eligible to be the Cardinals’ one player designated to return from I.R., although that decision can’t be made for at least six weeks.
Safety Tyvon Branch will also be eligible for the designation after he was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Branch also suffered a groin injury against the Rams and his absence may lead to Tyrann Mathieu’s return to slot corner duties.
The Cardinals waived punter Drew Butler with an injury settlement after he hurt his calf a couple of weeks ago. Ryan Quigley handled the punting and holding duties last Sunday.
To fill the open roster spots, the Cardinals promoted quarterback Zac Dysert and wide receiver Britten Golden from the practice squad and signed running back Kerwynn Williams.
