Regardless of whether Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suffered a concussion against the Broncos in Week One, Newton has one now. Three days after suffering it, Newton hasn’t been cleared to practice.

Per multiple reports, Newton isn’t practicing on Wednesday, in advance of Monday night’s game against the Buccaneers.

By rule, Newton must receive clearance from an independent neurologist to practice and then, separately, clearance to play.

It’s a process not nearly as simple as looking at an X-ray or inserting a thermometer. Last year, Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechley spent more than a month in the concussion protocol.

Newton sustained the concussion on a two-point conversion try. He pulled up near the goal line, absorbing unexpectedly a legal hit from Falcons linebacker Deion Jones.
