Running back Kerwynn Williams’ return to the Cardinals roster didn’t last very long.

Williams rejoined the Cardinals earlier this week when they placed Chris Johnson on injured reserve, but he won’t be with the team for Thursday night’s game against the 49ers. The Cardinals announced on Thursday afternoon that they’ve released Williams and promoted tight end Hakeem Valles from their practice squad.

Williams gave the team depth behind David Johnson, but they’ll roll with Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor as their reserve options against the Niners.

The team likely felt they had a greater need for help at tight end with Darren Fells ruled out for Thursday night because of a shoulder injury. He joins Jermaine Gresham and Ifeanyi Momah on the depth chart at the position.
