The Dolphins made a change to their defense last Thursday when they benched cornerback Byron Maxwell, but it may turn out to be a short-lived move for the veteran they acquired in an offseason trade.
Rookie cornerback Xavien Howard hurt his knee in Tuesday’s practice and didn’t practice with the team on Wednesday, casting some doubt on his ability to be in the lineup against the Titans this Sunday.
“He got tangled up [Tuesday],” Gase said, via the Miami Herald. “We’re still in the evaluation stage with him. We’re going to get through the rest of this week and ... see where it takes us here leading up to Sunday.”
Gase said he didn’t think the injury was “a major deal,” but Howard had knee surgery before training camp and that creates a greater need for caution than it might in other circumstances. The 2016 second-round pick has started all four games for the Dolphins and Maxwell is the likeliest replacement if he can’t go this weekend.
