Antonio Gates expected to play despite hamstring injury

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates should be able to get back on the field today.

Gates, listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, is expected to play, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

What isn’t clear is whether he’ll get a full workload. The 36-year-old Gates hasn’t been able to do much this season, with just six catches for 35 yards and one touchdown.

Chargers rookie Hunter Henry, the team’s second-round draft pick, has been the top tight end target this year, with 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown.

  1. .
In March the Chargers signed the 36 yr old Gates to a two year / 11 million dollar contract extension although clearly his best days are behind him. Essentially, they are paying him for past performance which is a major no-no in the Patriots system.

If Gates were a Patriot, Belichick would have allowed him to make his own deal while spending the 11 million shopping in the clearance department of free agency. With that kind of money he could sign 3-4 veterans who might turn out to be contributors. Much of the Patriots success starts with them being ” hawks” on the salary cap and rarely being saddled with a dead money contract.

Which team has the most cap space (60 million) going into next season? The Patriots.

  2. I can’t believe this dude is still playing. I hope he gets healthy because I feel bad for Rivers. All the injuries are ruining the Chargers. By the way, this is not a Pats article. I’m not a Pats hater but damn. This is about SD. Also, consider that NE does generally make good decisions but they benefit greatly that Brady is married to a woman that makes a boat load of cash which allows him to make less to help the team. If he were married to a housewife, you can bet your ass he’d be making Aaron Rodgers money and your cap situation would be much different. Maybe luck is involved here too and not just pure genius.

  3. Just about the end of the line. Pretty amazing ride for someone who entered the NFL as a marginal college basketball player

  4. I hope he gets 100% soon! He has been Rivers go to guy for many years. He is pure class on the field and off the field…..

  5. He’s not worth a dime. He’s 50 lbs overweight, can’t run and is constantly crying.

    Choo choo!
