Tom Brady: There was plenty of rust

Getty Images

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady made his first appearance of the 2016 season on Sunday and it went about as most people would want.

Brady completed 28-of-40 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots routed the Browns 33-13 for their fourth win in five games this season. He even ran twice for 14 yards, including a first down jaunt that led to a little extra celebration from the quarterback.

Despite all that, Brady felt like there was more he could have done to help New England’s cause.

“I think there was plenty of rust out there. I can do better in a lot of areas,” Brady said in his postgame press conference.

Plenty of rust feels like it is either an overly modest assessment of a day’s work or a pretty ominous warning of things to come over the next 11 games. Either one leaves the Patriots offense in great shape after their first game with Brady back in the saddle.

    Or both

  2. Lets SEE:

Home Vs CINN (WIN) 1st brady game at home,,Fuggabout it
At PITT (WIN) Close but no ceegar BENNY,,
HOME vs Seattle (WIN) tough for west to come east
At Buffalo (WIN)Welll REXY,,this time YOU ARE PLAYING #12

So at the hallway point…PATS will be 8-1 on a bye week then on to denver….

  3. The Browns would lose to Alabama and Ohio St., in all seriousness. They are trending up, though. One thing I judge teams rebuild on is team speed. The Browns just “look” faster than in past years. Some bad breaks against them, but the are right there. However, if anybody expected Brady to not do what he did today, well, you’re a fool. The Browns just didn’t have the horses to keep up. Let’s see Brady against a good defense.

  4. Plenty of rust as in he probably needs to get used to hearing his coordinator shout the other teams signals into his headset.

Dak Prescott is way better than Brady is.

  5. .
Brady will have to overcome the rust pretty quickly :

    10/16 vs Bengals
    10/23 @ Steelers
    10/30 @ Bills
    11/13 vs Seahawks
    11/20 @ 49ers
    11/27 @ Jets
    .

  6. I’m so glad the Patriots “system” allows for all of their quarterbacks to throw for 400 yards every week…….oh wait, there’s only one.

  10. If THAT is rust then I’d say that is

    Wait for it!

    Wait for it!

    Wait for it!

TREMENDOUS news for the 4 time World Champion Patriots! 🙂

  11. He’s right. But it was still nice to see that Goodell’s FrameGate is well on it’s way to fully backfiring

Brady is in decent form and will be relatively rested and healthier for the playoffs – solely focused on getting his revenge by adding at least one more ring for the thumb

Garoppolo came in with the game in hand and showed himself to be healthy enough to warrant a 1st & 4th round pick in this QB starved NFL – making up what Goodell never should have taken away – and Jacoby Brissette is also looking good with the possibility of one day replacing Brady as the Franchise QB for the next 15 years of domination- or being traded for a high pick himself!

The Laws of Physics, as well as the Laws of Good Karma appear to be on Brady and the Patriots side in affirming that the NFL’s own PSI data showed no deflation.

All thanks to Roger Goodell! The Commisioner responsible for the NFL’s ever shrinking ratings!

    OK, let me try.

Yes, we cheat, and we’ve only been caught for a fraction of what we’ve actually done. Ever since the 85 Bears exposed us we adopted the mantra “cheat to compete”. We’d be very mediocre otherwise.

Lol….the Pats beat Arizona on the road with a quarterback making his first career start. Calm down.

  21. Brady comes back to beat the Browns and the great Cody Kessler, and Patriot fans go into their usual arrogant frenzy. Enjoy it while it lasts because it won’t last forever.

  22. I’m a Bills fan and since we played at 4:25 today, I decided to take in Toms first game back. I will say he looked very sharp. If THAT was rusty, then I guess it’s about to get messy. I hate the Pats with everything in me. Every fiber in my soul hates them, BUT I respect winning so welcome back. Can’t wait until the rematch in Buffalo!…LET’S GET IT!

  23. This makes me want to see the Pats pull a Roger Clemons deal when Brady eventually starts to age, give the four easiest games of the season to Jimmy G, rest Brady”s arm and keep his brain for the playoffs. Jimmy G gets to learn in live game experience with Brady on the team. Win-win for everyone.

  24. Nice to see Garoppolo out there too. Thanks for the extra 4 bye weeks, Roger, your strategic planning skills remain as amazing as always.

  25. “Put the geezer out to pasture.”

The arguments the Pats haters use to try and justify their desperate hope that their team won’t have to face Brady any more.

Lolz. Yeah he’s really bad. Led the league in TDs and something like 3rd in passing last season.

He’s so “rusty” that he just threw for over 400 yds, 3 TDs, no INTs, but he should be retired because whining fans of bad teams don’t like him.

    SMH

  26. “I think there was plenty of rust out there. I can do better in a lot of areas,” Brady said…

Humble…ever the perfectionist. Welcome back GOAT!

  27. vancouversportsbro said “he probably needs to get used to hearing his coordinator shout the other teams signals into his headset”
    —-

of course, you know that defenses no longer use hand signals AT ALL, as 8 years or so ago they went to electronic communication system, in the helmet of a designated defensive player, talking to the coach.

    so your comment is STUPID

wait, you don’t know that, or much else, since you’re just an ignorant Patriots-hating troll!

    Ooops!

  29. Rusty ? I think all that air he ordered be removed from those footballs has gone to his head and it’s twice the size as should be. The Browns got taken to the cleaners and Tommy says he could have done more to help his team. Hope Tommy worked on his neck mussels over his rest period so he can carry that huge head he has developed.

  30. Brady needs to pull a Maximus and fire a football into whatever box the Commissioner is watching from.

“Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained!!”

  34. Brady was railroaded in one of the worst laid plans of all time. Any person spouting off about air pressure etc should preface their statement by saying “I’m a moron.” However, the suspension strengthened the Patriots by giving Brady a month off. This will be fun to watch… as to the Bills, put your analogous teeth on the curb so Brady and the Pats can stomp on the back of your head. The 3rd string QB you beat in your Super Bowl, went on the IR after playing hurt . You celebrated like gangbusters at Foxboro and on Twitter. Payback is coming…. out

  35. Great to see Roger’s willfully ignorant dupes begging on message boards for TB12 to retire.

There is no way ANY NFL team loses to a college team. Maybe 2% of Div I college players even make it on to an NFL roster much less ‘stick’. Pryor could not even make it in the NFL as a QB yet he was an All Big Ten Honorable Mention Twice, Rose Bowl MVP, and runner up as Big 10 MVP. Sure, the percentages are higher for an Alabama or Ohio St, but still it might be at most 10%. But virtually every player on the Browns would instantly be a starter at Alabama. Coker couldn’t even make an NFL squad and McCarren is on someone’s practice squad. When was the last time an Alabama RB made the Pro Bowl?

And the Browns do not really have a bad defense. It’s certainly not good but they are middle of the road to bottom third but at least 6-7 teams have a worst D. Plus their O is so bad, especially with QB injuries, that their D spends a lot of time on the field. But they are not ‘bad’. And Jackson has this team fighting hard; they will win a few games this year; 2 or 3 at least. But their issue is really their O.

But given that Brady had not been with the team for a month I think things will just continue to get better.

  39. A lot of this is just noise. The Pat’s fans saying Brady is off on his Gronk You revenge tour to stick it to Goodell are quite mistaken. That implies Brady has been coasting so far but now he’s mad so he will hit the gas. Brady his entire career has always given his 100% to being prepared for every game and then he plays the games with all his heart. That approach is the reason for all that winning over his career. All he is going to do now is continue with business as usual which will be to commit himself completely and totally to winning a championship. To Brady that’s what constitutes business as usual. Maybe they will win it all, maybe not. But whatever happens he will be ready for his games and play them hard.
