It was months ago that Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett said of his former teammate and Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, “I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him.” But while Bennett’s comments are months old, ESPN has recently chosen to play them on a nearly endless loop to promote a television feature about Bennett and his brother, and so ESPN asked Witten to respond this week.
Unsurprisingly, Witten didn’t have much of a response. Witten said he’s too busy to watch the ESPN interview of Bennett and his brother, Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett. And Witten declined to take the bait on hating Martellus, saying that he considers him a good player.
“Busy schedule,” Witten said. “I’ll make sure to get around to that real quick to see it. I did hear about it. Marty is a good player. He really is. He enjoys entertaining, but I’m glad he’s in a good place now and he’s having a good year so far. He is. He’s a good football player.”
Witten is wisely avoiding a war of words with Bennett. A response from Witten would only serve to give ESPN something else to play on an endless loop.
