Even Dak Prescott has acknowledged that the Cowboys are Tony Romo’s team, even as legends such as Roger Staubach have said it would be a mistake to bench the rookie quarterback as long as they’re winning.
But the guy who signs the checks — and thus makes the decision — said the matter was complicated.
During his weekly spot on 105.3 The Fan, Jones was asked if a fifth straight victory in Green Bay Sunday would cement Prescott’s status.
“I really don’t know that I would look at it that way,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I look at it in two ways, how Dak is evolving, how it is evolving now, not necessarily in the future, but in the future, so all of those things come to play.
“But I would say that there is nothing simple about this.”
With Romo targeting Week Eight or Nine for his return from a broken bone in his back, it’s moot for the next few weeks. And Prescott could eventually start looking like a fourth-round rookie at some point, which would keep them from having to make a hard decision.
“With the way Dak is playing, with the positives of him playing gives us every opportunity to feel good about our future,” Jones said. “Just the flat reality of years gives you that. He’s doing such an outstanding job, relatively speaking, to winning the ball games. All of those give us more ability to look at this thing and measure it as we go.
“You say, well isn’t timing everything? Surely you understand that any player is going to have days he’d like to play better, what are you going to do, call that a timing event? All of those nuances come into play. I do have to say one more time, this is an absolute great thing for our team, our fans, our future, our franchise, it’s a great thing to have this issue.”
And more than anything, you gather that Jones is enjoying this all, both for the depth he suddenly has at the position and the attention it brings.
