Ruled out for Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury, Patriots linebacker Jonathan Freeny is now out for the year -- or at least for the next eight weeks.

The team has placed linebacker Jonathan Freeny on injured reserve, along with tight end Greg Scruggs. One Patriots player per year may return from IR after eight weeks.

Freeny signed a two-year extension in late August, and he had appeared in all five regular-season games, with four starts.

The Patriots filled the two roster spots by elevating defensive end Geneo Grissom and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson from the practice squad.
