Packers would like to add another running back

The big focus in the aftermath of the Packers’ side of their 30-16 loss to the Cowboys has been on the play of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who had a couple of turnovers and missed several passes over the course of the afternoon.

Rodgers’ play has been a discussion point stretching back into last season and coach Mike McCarthy has faced plenty of questions about what the team needs to do in order to get things flowing again. Sunday brought more of those questions and one of McCarthy’s answers focused on the run game being the best way to make a quarterback successful.

The problem for the Packers is that Eddie Lacy is dealing with an ankle injury and James Starks is out for a while after having knee surgery on Sunday. That led to wideouts Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb getting work out of the backfield, something McCarthy would like to avoid by adding help at the position but says they may not be able to given the ripple effect on the rest of the roster.

“Well, you definitely want to,” McCarthy said, via ESPN.com. “It just depends on how you want to play the game. How they line up and what they have on the other side of the ball factors into that, too. It’s a long year. If you start making roster moves, it’s just really never one factor that factors other positions. Because, frankly, you have players that you may have to jeopardize putting out there.”

The Packers did that with quarterback Joe Callahan last week and lost him to the Saints on a waiver claim. That further illustrates that there aren’t any perfect solutions to what’s ailing the Packers offense, although an imperfect one would probably do as a way to stop the current bleeding.
