Panthers thin in spots, but they have tight end covered

When you think of the Panthers’ positional needs, tight end isn’t near the top of the list.

But their last two transactions have been to shore up what is otherwise a position of strength.

Via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers brought back blocking tight end Scott Simonson, cutting defensive end Lavar Edwards to create the roster spot.

They claimed former Saints tight end Chris Manhertz the day before, giving them four tight ends on the roster, including Greg Olsen and Ed Dickson.

The Panthers cut Simonson last week because of their need for healthy bodies at cornerback, but have since waived Lou Young, who was activated for the Saints game.

While it might not be as glaring a need, they can probably find a help at tight end this time of year, while qualified cover players or pass-rushers are a less-available commodity.

  1. A lot can happen between now and the end of the season. It the panthers are one of those teams it’s clear their season is already over. Unfortunately(for their fans) they need to play 10 more games so I guess they still need to fill all their roster spots

  2. The Panthers are a division rival, but Greg Olsen is probably the best tight end of all time. He is unstoppable, and great to have around on and off the field. He and JJ Watt are probably my all around favorite players for who they are as well as what they are. Greg Olsen is all the tight end the Panthers really need. That said, Cam Newton is showing he has some real growing up to do.
