Mike Zimmer calls out “soft” offensive line after “embarrassing” loss

Getty Images

Notoriously blunt Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer had little to be blunt about through five straight wins to start the season. After Sunday’s 21-10 loss at Philly, Zimmer had plenty to be blunt about.

The primary target of Zimmer’s candor was the offensive line, which was repeatedly overrun by the Eagles’ defense.

“We didn’t block anybody,” Zimmer told reporters after the game, via Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “We were soft. We got overpowered.”

It could have been worse, but for the performance of the team’s defense.

“It was embarrassing in at least two of the phases, and I’m very disappointed in the performance that we gave today,” Zimmer said. “We turned the ball over offensively, we didn’t block people, we dropped balls, we got the quarterback hit, we [need] two inches and we can’t convert on third down or fourth down, we got three shots in the red zone in the first half, we throw an interception, we gave up a 98-yard kickoff return, we fumbled a punt. If you’re going to do those things, you have no chance to win.”

As to the offensive line, a lack of cap space prevents the Vikings from making further upgrades.

“We’re not going to go down the street and pick up a bunch of guys,” Zimmer said. “We need to get these guys better and we need to do it quickly.”

The Vikings next play in eight days, at Chicago on Halloween night. The good news is that, at 5-1, the Vikings are tied with the Cowboys for the best record in the conference. The bad news is that the most recent game was the team’s worst loss in a long time.

And if the Eagles provided the blueprint for shutting down the Minnesota offense, it could be a long season over the Vikings over its final 10 weeks.

  1. Really….this guy thinks he has the type of roster to call out anything on the offense? Dude…..you are the Vikings. Stop reading the stuff being written and fix it.

  2. Bad coaches always look elsewhere when there are problems.

    Just like Arians.

Warned Viking fans that you hadn’t even played a good defense, much less a great one.

Today you got dominated by a good defense.

The great one sits in the top left corner of the country.

  3. “And if the Eagles provided the blueprint for shutting down the Minnesota offense, it could be a long season over the Vikings over its final 10 weeks.”

It’s one thing to have the blueprint….quite another to actually have the talent to follow it.

  4. The Eagles defense played exceptionally well today. Even if they did provide a blueprint on how to beat the Vikings, the bears lions and packers aren’t able to execute that blueprint. Minnesota should still win the division easy.

  5. Glad Zimmer was blunt with his assessment. Norv needs to have more up his sleeve than what his offense brought today. Special Teams has been a strength this season, but severely let themselves down today. The defense’s play early in the game should have set up a win – or at least a much closer contest – but the Eagles gave as good as they received.

One game out of six doesn’t make a bad team, but the Vikings need to establish a stable Offensive Line and stick with them through thick or thin.

  6. 3 drives into the redzone that ended with Zero points is the lines fault? Sorry Mike, think your blaming the wrong Guys!

  7. If John Harbaugh did this, I would kiss him on the lips.

Not really, but you know what I mean. 😉

Do you do stand up? Guessing no one attends.

  9. This is what it looks like when most of your OL would he considered “depth guys” on other rosters. At the outset of training camp the starting OL looked like it would include at least 3 of the following: Kalil, Loadholt, Smith, Sullivan and Harris. I know it’s tough to overcome losing all of them, but that’s what they’re paid to do. Every team has injuries.

  10. All the packer trolls have a lot to say… well your packers still lost to the vikes, so what does that say about your squad if the 5-1 vikes are so terrible.

  11. Defense did what they had to. Special teams mistakes and bad offensive tackles killed us today. The offensive line seriously might be the worst in the NFL.

Vikes have no offense and defense, while aggressive takes a lot of cheap shots and is undisciplined. Not exactly a formula for success.

When you make comments like this, it shows everyone else that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Undisciplined defenses give up big plays and cost their team field position. If you’ve watched any game (including todays) you would see that this is not the case. Cheap shots? If they take a lot of cheap shots, than why aren’t they being fined? Why aren’t there any Personal Fouls? Surely the NFL would take notice.

Vikings are not terrible at all. The minor chatter you see is chicken feed compared to what viking fans say about GB, even if we win. Hardly even comparable.

You have your own fan base to blame.

    drive #1
4 man front, Bradfords elbow was hit as he threw and the ball was picked.

drive #2 (started at the 2yd line after an int)
OL jumped offsides, gave up a sack, then bradford fumbled.

drive #3 3 and inches, RB gets stuffed. 4th and inches rb gets stuffed.

if you watched the game than you would know that the OL was awful.

  21. It’s great min fans are so focused on the division they apparently are a lock to win. GB is thinking about going further in the playoffs.

Last year is an example. Checkers vs chess.

  22. Another game, another set of key injuries. Vikings can’t hold on much longer when they seem to lose one or two starters a game. This is getting ridiculous.

It really is making me angry seeing Treadwell not suit up again. That pick should have been used on a tackle. Receiver was not a a need. I still don’t understand why they thought their offensive line was set. Stupid pick by spielman. Now it’s hurting the team.

    ————————–
Viking fans don’t walk in lockstep with Paul Allen. He calls a good game but his commentary and opinions are homerish and taxing. He doesn’t represent the Vikings fan base just because he gets a paycheck from the Vikings. He lost most of us when he was defending Chili and Frazier.

  24. A vast majority of Vikings fans who post here would deserve this game being the start of an 11 game losing streak.

  25. Watching New England dominate again. They look unstoppable. Honestly, Viking fans, even if they somehow went to the Super Bowl (they won’t) they could never hang with New England or Denver or Pittsburgh. Those are the three teams most likely to go in the afc and their teams are balanced on all sides.

Hopefully the coaches can fix and coach up these guys so we can head into next season with an experienced and deep offensive line.

  26. The mark of the great teams is how well they handle adversity after an embarrassing loss. I predict the Vikings will learn alot from this loss and rebound next week.

  27. I wouldn’t worry to much Vikings fan. Every team is gonna lay an egg every once in a while. As a Falcons fan, I know this all to well. (NFC Chanpionship game 2013).

  28. Pack started 6-0 last year. Pack supposed to have easiest schedule this year. But Vikes passed them up. GB has ATL, SEA who are better than AZ and CAR. All others equal. Today we all saw the emperor had no clothes.

  29. Maybe Philly is pretty tough at home. They shut down Big Ben and company. Vikings will bounce back next week.

    Superbowl homeboy!!!!!!

  30. Please, one bad game on the season and these inbred Packer fans talk smack. Still better than the cheese, and will be when the season ends. All great teams have a bad game or 2 in a season. That’s why no team has gone undefeated and won the SB since 1975 morons. That’s 41 years for all you GB fans that can’t count.

  31. It’s funny when journalists use the ol’ “so-and-so provided the blue print.”

Did Philly do anything vastly different than what the Vikings 5 prior opponents tried to do on defense? Probably not- Philly has the personal to do what it did- the others did not. I mean could ANYONE imagine Green Bay’s defense doing what the Eagles D did here? I didn’t think so.

If these two teams played again I wouldn’t expect the same results- especially if the tables were turned and the game was in Minneapolis. Not saying a win or loss- just saying it would not be completely lopsided. Today- the Vikings came out VERY, VERY flat- it’s not the first time a team has come out flat after their bye. I think this game got into Bradford’s head- especially when things weren’t going well- maybe even before he got to Philly. But the offenses poor play was not on him. Zimmer will right the ship- in that I have faith.

  42. doesn’t matter how good the defense is, your offense is ranked 32 after 7 weeks and no sign of improving, you beat the Packers in a must win home field opener by only 3 points and the Packers have not yet figured out their offense, when you as a city and fan base set your sights on just winning the division you are setting yourselves up for failure.

  43. This is what happens when you have an o-line that sucks. They are capped out so there won’t be any help on the way this season. Better hope Bradford stays healthy considering the guy has not finished more seasons than he has actually completed. Jake Long looked awful.

  44. They somehow equate the Vikings having a flat game to the Packers having a chance. Funny stuff indeed.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Oh…..something tells me you aren't laughing tonight Minny man.

  45. The game wouldn’t have been as close if not for the refs keeping the Vikings in the game. Late in the first half … How can Rhodes tackle the WR on a deep pass without looking back for the ball at all – about the most obvious PI call ever, while the DL goes after Wentz’s knees, and neither is called? The Vikings are the NFL’s darlings. Too bad they will need more than the refs help to win enough.

  49. So when Rodgers or MM calls out someone for poor play it’s throwing them under the bus… but this would be holding players accountantable… I think any time someone in a leadership roll calls someone out its being accountability.

the eagles were the better team today, and both teams played the second half with backup tackles on both sides.

unfortunately, minny’s o-line issues will end up haunting them, as sammy can’t be put under that much pressure, and unless the line can provide the push for a running game, the options become limited. to have been 5-0 with the injuries was lucky. eventually, they tend to catch up with you…

You also learn a lot more from a loss than you do from a win. The Vikings will come back stronger from this loss than they would have from a win. I have news for everyone who thinks the Vikings will never win another game: This is the same offensive line we’ve seen all season. It caught up to them today. It won’t every week.

These Seattle trolls need to go. Thw Hawks offense was on full display SNF and scored 6 points.

  78. Wentz threw for 138 yards a TD and two picks, with a QBR of 52. Yet to listen to people here the Vikings defense and team got housed. Poor assessment. The special team scored a TD for the Eagles.

Fortunately the O-line problems can be easily addressed with the 1st and 4th round picks next year.

    ——————————————–

The Vikings have their 4th round pick for 2017. The conditional pick was for 2018. Keep trying to be clever though, it’s so adorable.

I’m going to take a play out of vikes fans playbook here.

Zimmer is a whiner. Zimmer has no accountability. Zimmer throws all his teammates under the bus. Zimmer blames everyone but himself. Zimmer is a bad teammate.

But yet vikes fans give credit to him for being a stand up guy and a competitior.

Thats all we hear on packer threads about Mccarthy and Rodgers.

    Sheesh.
    —————-

Once again, your inability to comprehend the obvious is amazing…

Zimmer is the HC. He’s not a teammate – he’s the player’s boss.

When Rodgers throws his teammates under the bus – he forgets that is part of the team.

We’ve all seen Rodgers throw pass short or over the heads of his receivers multiple times over the last year. Rodgers has thrown multiple interception and has multiple fumbles too.

I’m happy Zimmer didn’t sugarcoat things. The players love Zimmer and his honesty. The players to want to be coddled like Mike McCarthy does to his players in Green Bay.

The Vikings laid an egg out on the field yesterday. That was obvious to anyone that watched the game.

No one really expected an undefeated season.

Packer fans enjoy good relationships and mutual respect with every fan-base in the league, except one. Viking “fans,” like you, are two-faced and self-serving and are considered pariahs because of actions and arrogant decisions they’ve chosen to make.

Actually, I think we (the fans) handled it quite well.

No comments about our valiant comeback in garbage time to make the game appear to be closer than it was – as you and other Packer fans talk about the Viking/Packer game.

  86. I think it has more to do with in the last 16 games. The Vikings are 12-4 and the pack is 8-8. And one of those “victories” was the Lions game on TNF. Or they would be 7-9.

  87. Politically correct butt hurt society is part of the problem to begin with. Tell it like it is.

I actually like Zimmer, even as a GB fan.

  88. “I have news for everyone who thinks the Vikings will never win another game: This is the same offensive line we’ve seen all season. It caught up to them today. It won’t every week.”

Who said they will never win another game? I think a lot of fans are pointing out the obvious: if the Vikes defense and special teams are not at the top of their game, they will struggle to consistently win games with their offense. Their “big win” this year against the Pack was in a game where they scored a measly 17 points, and the Packers clearly had their struggles on offense.

I’m guessing though when they beat the Bears next week, all will be right in the world again because any time they beat a weak opponent (Giants, Titans and let’s be honest, the Texans), they are imposing their will whereas when the Packers win those same games (same giants, Jaguars, Bears), it proves nothing.

  92. Calm down, calm down. It’s one game. The Vikings still have a great D and will be a playoff team.

Plus they beat the Packers once so really the entire season is a glorious success no matter what.

    Fumbles aren’t turnovers?

  95. “No comments about our valiant comeback in garbage time to make the game appear to be closer than it was – as you and other Packer fans talk about the Viking/Packer game.”

Garbage time? The Packers scored with almost 13 mins left in the 4th quarter to make it a 17-14 game, and had several chances to either tie or take the lead after that. Garbage time scoring is when you score with 37 seconds left in the game to make it a 21-10 game, with no conceivable chance of coming back to win, like the Vikes did yesterday. Good comparison though 🙂

  96. “Plus they beat the Packers once so really the entire season is a glorious success no matter what.”

And this is why Viking fans (at least some) get a deservedly bad rep. This fuels the “Vikes vs. Pack is the Vikings Super Bowl” for them. When the Packers beat the Vikings, outside of a few days of banter, it’s just another game for them in a season long battle.

    /////////:////////:///://

Of course. It was a Viking fan SuperBowl. A win over the Packers is always a Viking SuperBowl.

  98. The lack of cap space doesn’t have to be an issue if the Vikings would be willing to part with a player that another team could find value in.

The best candidate for that is Jarius Wright, who is in year two of a four year deal. As a Viking fan, I like Wright very much, but he has rarely seen the field this year because Theilen and Patterson have vaulted past him on the depth chart.

Wright is a solid receiver, smallish, but definitely a breakaway threat when he gets his hands on the ball; his highlight reel has enough of those plays to make him a viable option for a team that needs a slot receiver with breakaway speed. If the Vikings can get even a competent offensive tackle for him, why not do the trade?

You don’t really believe that do you? Lmfao…. Seattle is a not a very good team. And not only that, their defense is middle of the pack now. I’m not even a Vikings fan, but their defense is the best in the NFL. With all due respect to the other teams, it’s really not that close. Philly’s D won that game for them. But philly’s offense looked horrible against that Vikings D, just like the packers, panthers, giants, etc. You’re just being unrealistic, albeit hilarious.

  100. Fact is, the talent(or lack there of)on the O-line is going to put this team at a server disadvantage. If we can’t run or protect the QB it won’t matter how good the defense is.

Actually, I didn’t see any Packer fans think that the ship has been righted after the win. All those comments were coming from Viking fans, saying that the win means nothing. I would be willing to bet though that after the Vikes win (at least they should) this weekend, they will point to the Eagles game as a blip, and that this will be “what the real Viking team looks like.”
