Eli Apple on mom’s outspokenness: “I was like godd–n”

Eli Apple loves his mother and understands she’s outspoken.

But he also wanted to make it clear he’s just over here doing his job.

After his mother Annie Apple blasted Giants owner John Mara for comments regarding kicker Josh Brown’s admission of abuse, and then doubled down with a column about her history of being abused, the rookie cornerback had the same reaction many others did.

“How are you a so-called champion of domestic violence but lack basic compassion for a victim?” Annie Apple wrote. “Yes, this man signs my son’s checks as I’ve been reminded on Twitter. Mr. Mara owns the New York Giants. He doesn’t own Annie Apple. Wrong is wrong. And Mr. Mara’s comments were unapologetically wrong and hit at a raw place.”

I was like, ‘godd–n,’” Apple said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “But she’s her own person. She’s gonna do whatever she wants to do. She’s gonna talk about this. I’ve just got to understand that. It’s cool.

“My mom’s very vocal and that topic is very important to her, so I can understand where she was coming from. But at the same time in my position I just have to do my part and play football and do what I can do.”

Apple said he’s had conversations with the Giants organization about the topic.

“I’ll be good on that front,” Eli Apple said. “I talked to them, let them know my mom, her reactions like that sometimes are like that, she’s her own person, she’s gonna do that, so I’ve just got to do my job. I just made sure I talked to everybody, man, just let them know, whoever is concerned. . . .

“She has a voice, she has a voice and she’s gonna use it no matter. I love her for that. She’s a unique woman and she’s always gonna speak up no matter what and I can’t really control that. I’ve just got to play football, . . . I tried to (talk to her). She’s a little upset at everybody right now, so I’m probably gonna give her her space a little bit.”

It’s an unusual position for the son to have to be in, to be discussing the words of his mother. But from the moment she agreed to step into the spotlight, it was also a little inevitable.

  1. Mara has proven himself to be a vile man who cares nothing about domestic violence other than something to cover up so any abuser on the team can keep playing.

  2. I’m sure Annie Apple is a quality person. But when your son is a professional athlete, you can’t upstage him as if you were a stereotypical “Little League/high school parent” who always has something to say to the coach from the stands and at practice. Eli Apple can’t be in the position of having a dozen mics in his face responding to what Mom said this week.

  3. Go get him Mom, Mara and serial liar Goodell are much more concerned about a whisper of air than protecting woman. It is clear in their words and actions…GOODELL MUST GO…How can the other owners continue to put up with this buffoon who has been wrong about everything in his ten year reign of terror.

  4. I think John Mara is a hypocrite. He supports suspending players all over the league until they are his own. Then when something bad happens a token suspension is applied. He is lucky that he is one of the handful of owners who holds Goodell’s puppet strings.

  5. 1. Good for her. It’s a shame more people don’t have the intestinal fortitude to stand tall and stay true to their beliefs.

    2. Good for him. He’s made it pretty clear that he has her back, while wishing she maybe wouldn’t go so hard at his boss.

    3. I hope her actions don’t negatively affect his standing with the team. It would speak poorly of the Giants as an organization and Mr. Mara as a man, in my opinion.

    4. Please resist the urge, strong as it may be, to use “upset the apple cart” in your comments. It’s just too easy.

  6. Thank you Ms. Apple!!! Calls it like she sees it!!

Goodell is just a puppet for the billionaire owners. THEY are to blame on this also. Goodell is just an idiot.

  7. Using God’s name in vain. Wow, how pathetic. How sad your vocabulary must be if you can’t even talk properly without using His name in vain. Sad.

I’m pretty sure the owners, or at least most of them, love Goodell. They get to be as rotten as they want to be without taking any of the heat for it.

I don’t like Goodell anymore than anyone else does, but he’s done an outstanding job of insulating the owners from the heat generated by the actions taken as a result of their own wishes.

  9. The headline should really be “Eli Apple indifferent on domestic abuse”

    Listen to your mom, Eli.

  10. Good for her.

Everyone can look it up – in AUGUST there were articles right here at PFT talking about at least 20 instances of Domestic Violence.

Goodell showed that Mara pulls his strings and agreed to a 1 game suspension and like Ray Rice-Gate they now claim ingnorance.

Heck – as soon as the NFL had to move rescue Mrs. Brown at the Pro Bowl it should have been a 6 game suspension. They can’t say they didn’t know about THAT!

Now they’ll fabricate another false scandal to show how “tough” Goodell when it comes to ignoring the Laws of Physics

  11. He better be careful or she could end talking him out of a job, especially if the headache she causes is becomes bigger than his production on the field. See: Grimes, Miko for additional information.

  13. I would like to see Mrs. Apple and Miko storm Goodell’s office at the same time, yelling at him and calling him names non-stop, wagging their fingers, sweeping stuff off his desk. The pop-eyed look on Goodell’s mug….

Eli Apple seems like a reasonable measured mature person his mother not so much
    ————————————————————————————————

You can’t be serious. Did you read the article about what this woman went through? It is extremely well-written and more than “reasonable”. She absolutely earned the right to speak her mind, and Mara is completely in the wrong here.

  15. Maybe Mr Mara will be late with the payroll checks ,,,how would you like them apples !
