Patriots trade A.J. Derby to Broncos

For the second time today, the Patriots have made a trade.

New England has sent tight end A.J. Derby to Denver, ESPN reports. The Broncos gave up a draft pick for Derby, likely a conditional late-round pick next year.

The Patriots drafted Derby out of Arkansas with a sixth-round pick in 2015. He spent his entire rookie year on injured reserve. He has played in four games this year, but only sparingly.

In Denver, Derby will add some depth at tight end and contribute on special teams.

New England also acquired linebacker Kyle Van Noy in a trade with the Lions. Trading Derby and acquiring Van Noy keeps the Patriots at 53 players on the roster.

  1. Whatever…he wasn’t any good anyway. EXCELLENT move by the 4 time World Champion Patriots!

    🙂

Wow, I can’t remember the last time the Broncos and Patriots have swung a deal.
Derby made some plays in preseason, but was stuck behind Gronk and Bennett. This looks like Belichick did Derby a favor by moving him.
    .

  3. I would never trade with a contender in the AFC much less the broncos who are one of the few teams in the conference who could beat the patriots in the playoffs

Keep that in mind when Gwonk gets hurt.

  5. Belichick loves his tight ends… makes you wonder if they’re either close to an extension with bennett or they expect a lot more than blocking from michael williams next year.

  6. Pats get a 5th rounder in 2017 for Derby….
Now only have 2 healthy TE’s…. Kind of surprised by this one…..

  7. Derby had 15 catches for 189 yards (12.6 yards/catch) with 1 TD this preseason. Not too shabby — it has to make Pats fans at least a little nervous.

  8. .
Belichick does not like to go into the draft without picks in every round. The Derby trade recoups the 5th rounder shipped to Cleveland for Barkevious Mingo.
    .

  9. Injuries are what scares me most.

    Only two QBs are playable.

    LB’s getting hurt.

I’m glad the oft used Blount came out of the Pittsburgh game without injury.

Lewis would be a fan favorite to see. But can he show flashes AND stay healthy? Doesn’t seem possible.

Gronk plays so hard he injures himself.

Edelman looks slower (he actually looks BIGGER too, not fat but build).

Then there is the O line…

There are reasons we have to part with serviceable players!!!

    This is an odd one.

I get the feeling that the Pats aren’t done; are they manipulating the roster space ahead of a big move?

Don’t use “manipulating” around Patriots Haters. It’s one of their foam-at-the-mouth words.

Calling someone a ‘hater’ is indeed as childish as the name calling you routinely do but in this instance the turn of phrase was ‘Patriots Haters’ which is an apt description of a subset of troll. It should not be confused with the juvenile use of the blanket term ‘hater’ as used by kids. Most New Englanders are fairly well educated, for instance I have never heard one use the term ‘ad noseum’ then try to claim it was deliberate when they were too dumb to quit while they were ahead.
Please discuss and feel free to toss out a ‘skippy’ or some other equally adult pejorative.

  15. The Patriots are 6-1. Leading the conference. And Belichick IS wicked smaht. All is good in titletown. Thanks.

Who determines what is an apt description of a subset? Your arrogance is humorous….you are mad because you were suckered in by being a smart ass nerd spelling guru. Lest you forget because of the atmospheric pressures of your loft perch I too am from New Enland but left because I got bored with abundance of stuffed shirts….Skippy….or,is it Timmy?

Yeah, that was fun watching that jackass make a fool of himself. Deliberate? Suuuure it was. Who was that moron?

Some of the trolls are so stupid that they actually use more than one username for posting drivel so they are actually competing with themselves.

And empty barrels make the most noise because that’s what empty barrels do. Calling yourself the factpurveyor is cute but hardly makes you a Mensa Captain……it just makes you look like a phony….stick to the science of gases which you are full of .

  23. It’s a curious move after they let Clay Harbor go (now with Detroit) and are now down to two tight ends and Bennett and Gronk have both been hurt this year. I suppose this is the roster move they needed to create space for Dion Lewis and that Belichick has the tight end depth thing figured out. The only real thing that bothers me is that the move makes Denver stronger this year.

  24. Yikes someone actually believes that pulling the trigger on an unloaded gun makes more noise than pulling the trigger on a loaded gun.

Someone should stick to being a drooling fool and do everyone a favor and spend more time posting under articles about the team that they root for.

Maybe they are hopeful that the new linebacker can cover tight ends and could shut down whatever tight ends they happen to face in the post season including AJ Derby.

Kyle Van Noy looked really fast in his college highlight videos so maybe the Pats hope that he can cover even better than Hightower. Then they could use him in sub packages. They also recently picked up Mingo. Maybe that was for a similar objective.

Devlin, Fleming and even Bolden have all lined up at TE in the past.

  29. The Pats need to make space for Lewis so thinning down the roster & getting future draft picks makes for smart business….I was surprised the deal was with Denver but am ok with the reasoning….

I think as an adult it’s time to learn to laugh yourself more and others less……you need a big dose of humility. Glad I was able to get under your thin skin so easily. Cheers and have an Ideal Gas Law Day skippy.

  32. It’s sad that Bill needs to do moves like this because he messed up the 7 draft picks he had in the last three rounds, and wasted his time with FA like Donald Brown and Knighton. But Pats fans only care about what jersey Kevin Faulk wore during the draft… So I guess it doesn’t matter to them.

Van Noy = Adaleus Thomas 2.0

  33. Start fining and suspending anthem protesters and I’ll renew my Sunday Ticket. Until then, I’ll watch my home team and ignore the rest of the games.

If my home team starts protesting anthems for attention, then I’ll quit watching them, too.

There are millions of people doing this, and hopefully millions more start.
