Limited trade interest in Joe Thomas, for now

AP

With the trade deadline four days away, a couple of teams are sniffing around the possibility of trading for Browns tackle Joe Thomas.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, two teams have been exploring the potential move. However, there is no indication that a trade will be finalized, or even that tangible trade talks will happen between now and 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Thomas has a base salary of $8.3 million for 2017. Prorated from Week Nine through Week 17, Thomas is due to make $4.39 million over the balance of the season.

This means that whoever trades for Thomas, who is under contract through 2018, will need to have $4.39 million in cap space — or that the team will have to restructure the contract to chop down the cap number.

It’s unclear which teams are exploring a possible run at Thomas. PFT reported over the weekend that the Giants, Seahawks, Cardinals, and Vikings each have some degree of interest, with the Patriots interested only if the Browns slide into fire-sale mode and are willing to essentially give him away.

The Browns, per a source with knowledge of the situation, want a second-round pick for Thomas. Coach Hue Jackson, however, has said that Thomas won’t be traded.

Then again, Jackson isn’t the G.M. or the owner.

  1. Seahawks move to the top of the NFC with Thomas; that position is their most glaring weakness. As bad as the line is, the interior is decent and the center is good.

Thomas at LT will allow them to put the best tackle currently on their roster at RT and they would actually have a serviceable line.

Russell Wilson should be lobbying for this, big time. Bigly even.

  2. Interesting dynamic with Thomas. The Giants, Hawks and Pats could accommodate his contract as is, the Cards would need to get creative and the Vikings would probably need to shed some salary

  3. As a Seahawks fan Joe Staley makes more sense for our ZBS than Thomas having said that, I would take either one right now. Even with issues transitioning into our scheme he would still be far better then what we have.

He plays for the Browns, not the Packers.

  5. I can’t see this for the Vikings. They could get around the cap space problem with some creative contract restructuring, or cutting Purple Jesus who’s not much help to their current offense, even when (rarely) healthy; but I just can’t see them giving up anymore high draft picks.

  6. Seattle should offer a second and a third, or a first and a sixth.
    More picks than the Vikings.

  7. The Vikings could get around their cap space problem, IF they traded Jarius Wright, who is in the second year of a 4 year $15 million contract. Throw in a mid-round draft pick if you have to, but get it done.

  8. Cleveland has stockpiled a boat load of picks so they have all the leverage. That alone will make the asking price “above” market value.

Teams in the hunt for the playoffs’ won’t take the bait and disrupt their cap situation.

My question is………………why did he resign with Cleveland other than money????

  9. Forget about Joe Thomas, the ghost of Danny Thomas would be an upgrade over stone-footed ereck flowers at LT for the Giants….but even Jerry Reese isnt dumb enough to give away a 2nd. If the Browns asked for a 3rd I think the Giants might jump….and they DESPERATELY need o-line help at the two tackle spots.

  10. The Browns need to get out of their own way and trade their guys with value. They need to understand they need to accept they are in a rebuil mode and accumulate draft picks.

Contra, you do relize Joe Thomas is a Wisconsin born and raised man. AND played for the Wis Badgers.

What kind of idiot are you ? Viking fans hate Packer fans and we hate you and your stupid brethren,
but just in case you didn’t know, at least Packer fans have 4 Super Bowl trophies. How many do you have dung head ?

More like the B hole of America. Buffalo would be the armpit.

  13. Vikings have the LEAST AMOUNT OF CAP SPACE IN THE LEAGUE. All you rube queens fans slow down your annual hysteria and exaggeration of your successes.

You can’t make many more moves after Dick Spielman pushed all his chips in the middle for Bradford, they will go 10-6 and MAYBE win one game in the playoffs most likely not since they’ve done that once in the last 15 years and that will be that.

Contracts come up, you can’t keep everybody and the Viking “dynasty” is over before you know it

  14. Seattle should be all over this. It may not help right away because Thomas would have to get use to the system but when the playoffs comes. Doug Baldwin, Jimmy Graham, Tyler Lockett and the defense could all be having better season with the edge problems halfway solved.

Against weak defensive talent, we will see Seahawks blast Saints for 30 plus points this weekend. Then Bills come in, Wilson will be running for his life again.

  15. He likes his situation. Great pay, lots of free time, stable living arrangement.
I want to put this out there……Joe makes about 500,000 a pay check/ week during 17 week yearly pay period. A play off paycheck…first 2 weeks of wild card and division round..is 24,000$. If a bye, you aren’t even payed that little penny off the ground til you play in 2nd week. In a work force, where your body is important to keep your yearly salary…..I think we all can understand why there is a % of players who really would rather have the extra 2-4 weeks of vacation rather than risk their lively hood on basically no pay to play.

    ________

Cutting Peterson doesn’t make his contract disappear. It was guaranteed by being on the Week 1 roster. But then I wouldn’t really expect you to know something like that.

  17. There is not a team who WOULDN”T want Joe Thomas! The Browns asking price has been higher than Josh Gordon. That should tell you how high!

  18. He would be a great fit for the Vikings. But, they really don’t have the cap space. Yet on the other hand, Spieman can get pretty creative when he wants to. Maybe a combination of getting Thomas to restructure & extend his deal mixed with a draft pick AND Cordarrelle Paterson (who the Vikes won’t be keeping after this year anyways) might work.

  19. Gadzooks! Thomas for their 2nd, and 6th OR 7th by end of weekend to the Seahawks. Their starting LT this week will probably be a guy who did not play football until his senior year in college, and that was as a TE. George Fant never took a snap playing on the line until a couple weeks ago. Thomas then can be bookended in the draft with a RT with their first round pick. As of this year, the Hawks have less money invested in the O Line … far less, than any other team. Need it be mentioned that the QB has been Russelled off to the ding house with a new problem each of the past three games? Hawks have already had their 5th rounder taken away by the League for unpansylike practices. zoom.

  20. Pats trade Garopallo for Thomas, Browns 1st & rights to Josh Gordon…
Browns have their franchise QB…..Pats get the fair value in return

  21. Vikes sure could use him.
They would probably be willing to give a 1st rounder if they HAD one.

Their O-line is completely decimated, and was exposed by Philly.

Combine that with the fact the Bradford does VERY little in the way of escaping, rushing up the middle and collapsing the pocket on Bradford, and ensuring he doesn’t get outside the Pocket is practically a SURE sack right now.

  22. All the Viking fans begging for Joe Thomas is laughable because it will never happen. The Vikings could trade their 1st round draft pick in 2017, oh wait, they don’t have one.

You don’t sound like you watch very many Vikings games. Patterson is about as valuable right now as he has ever been, and is actually turning into a viable receiver. He’ll be back unless starting WRs start dropping out of the sky into the Vikings facility…

  24. Just because a guy re-signs with the team that drafted him doesn’t mean he’s only out for the money. Sometimes players end up somewhere and love it.

I remember when Alge Crumpler signed with the Titans, he said he thought he’d hate Nashville, but ended up loving it.

  25. Peterson has one year left and represents an $18,000,00.00 cap hit next year. The ability to improve with attractive contracts to other and new players is shot in the butt, as is the following year because of the Bradford deal.

It doesn’t matter, as long as they win the SuperBowl this year.

    Good luck with that.

And why would anybody pay care about your opinion which is nothing more than constant Vikings-hating, non-stop bile?

  27. Trade Laquon Treadwell or Jarius Wright (preferably Teadwell, Wright is productive) and a 5th rounder.

Honestly, I’d trade Treadwell for a backup tackle. Why?

    1. the vikings need more tackles anywhere they can get them.

    2. Treadwell has literally done nothing. Vikings should have drafted a tackle with that pick, not a receiver. Spielman cannot be trusted when he drafts offensive players. his record is not good at all.

  28. How stupid is the Cleveland Brown franchise if they DON’T trade Joe Thomas?

What good is he on this team now? Is he going to protect your 12th string QB you covet so much?

Viking commentors aren’t that smart WJH. Be easy on them. They don’t know anything about “CAP SPACE” or
“ProRated Contracts”. Just let them dream, babble, and look stupid. It’s not their fault. They haven’t had PRO FOOTBALL there for a long time. Just some pesky players out there in puke purple jerseys running around faking it.

  30. My Vikings are waiting to see how the OLine gels on Monday nite b/f making a drastic decision on Thomas.

  31. Vikings will need to trade Jarius Wright and perhaps renegotiate a contract or two to get Thomas, but don’t forget that Thomas played under NORV! when he was the Browns’ offensive coordinator. Saying that, Staley played next to Boone the past few seasons so that may come into play too

  32. brettfavreisapacker4ever (except when he was traded to the Jets and then signed for the Vikings)

As with most teams, the Vikings can massage their salary cap by adjusting existing contracts and can end up with a happy ending.

Vikings have links with both Thomas (played under Norv Turner) and Staley (played next to Alex Boone) so it would be wron to say never say never!

The Browns either want draft picks or young players with equal value, and I could see a trade for CB Mackensie Alexander and WR Jarius Wright with perhaps some movement in the later rounds of the draft.

    ____

It could happen, but I don’t believe it will. I think its laughable so many fans believe Minnesota is desperate. They want to win, should win way more than they lose and have the same (or better) contract situation as any team in the league. They don’t have to pay a first rounder next year.
