Brian Baldinger: Eagles should put a bounty on Ezekiel Elliott

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made clear that bounties will not be tolerated when he cracked down on the Saints in 2012. So it will be interesting to see how the NFL reacts to an NFL employee urging a team putting a bounty on one of the NFL’s brightest young stars.

That’s what happened when NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger appeared on 97.5 The Fanatic and said that on Sunday, the Eagles’ defense should be trying to injure Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.

“This is the guy that that we’ve got to hurt,” Baldinger said of Elliott. “This is the guy that we’ve got to take out of the game. There’s got to be 10 guys that want to hurt him every single play. In fact, we may even put a little bounty on Ezekiel Elliott.”

Baldinger also echoed a favorite phrase of Gregg Williams during the Saints bounty scandal.

“You want to cut off the head to kill the body, that’s the guy you’ve got to get to,” Baldinger said.

Baldinger accused Elliott of “arrogance” for the way he dressed at the NFL draft and said Elliott “bugs me.” And Baldinger said he’d like to see the Eagles’ defense take umbrage at Elliott, too.

“This is the guy you’ve got to take out. That’s the guy you’ve got to eliminate,” Baldinger said.

Baldinger was an NFL offensive lineman for 11 seasons with the Cowboys, Colts and Eagles. When Baldinger was playing in the 1980s and 1990s, those sentiments may have been commonplace. But in today’s NFL, those sentiments have no place.

  1. So because he personally doesn’t like the way the guy dressed at the draft he wants him hurt?

    What a lowlife.

The league won’t care though. Corruption runs deep in Roger Goodell’s National Integrity League

  2. This Baldinger guy sounds like a real sociopath.

Football will get better once idiots like these are kept at arm’s length from it..

  3. What’s the difference if you say it or not? Everybody knows defensive players are trying to punish the offensive stars, even though the league continues to tweak rules to protect them. This is as old as football. Whether people come out and say it or not. I don’t wish injury on anybody but it’s nice to see a defense exert it’s will within the rules and knock a star player out of the game.

  4. Guess he’ll soon be looking for a job…..
My guess is he’s also involved in the concussion lawsuit as he cant be thinking too clearly by making those comments…..
Everyone thinks & knows what he said for the most part but to publicly say it out loud after all that has transpired is beyond stupid…..

  5. I hope they fire his butt and inform the refs to keep a close eye out for any shenanigans at the game…..what a jerk!!!!

  6. Baldinger is another loser Clown connected with the E-Girls….

    The Lords of NO rings….

  7. got careless and got caught up in the moment of dallas wk in phila coupled with media bringing up past bounty that buddy ryan put on dall K zendejas.

stupid comment and he will pay for it. probably suspended. apology at a minimum.

  8. It’s one thing to play hard-nosed football. Playing dirty with the intent to injure another player has no place in the game. Maybe this neanderthal played to injure opposing players as these thoughts and actions are usually rooted in past behavior.

  9. That’s football. PC police running amuck. Play hard. Play within the rules. Take out the best players on the other team and have a better chance of a W

  10. Geesuz, after reading some of the “shock” in the comments here……I can see why this has turned into flag football…………..grow a set people, It is a violent game !

Everyone on defense wants to inflict pain on offensive players….are you new to football or something?
    ————————-
Yeah. The hits should be hard, but also clean. Dirty and targeted hits to heads, necks, arms, hands, knees. . . No place in the NFL, Especially dirty and/or targeted hits for money. Baldinger should be suspended for his stupid mouth and Goodell needs to go public and remind these dirty players the consequences of their actions including hefty fines, suspensions, and game ejections. It’s always the usual suspects–if they continue to seriously hurt players or attempt to seriously hurt players, they’re gone.

  12. Baldinger is a real man. I laud him for his frankness. Elliott is overhyped, and he does need to be hazed. If he does the feed me thing against them, the Eagles defenders will make him eat it. I predict 20 carries for 31 yards, 2 fumbles and a concussion

  13. Baldinger…..sounds like a common football injury. Word from the sideline is he got a ball dinger. He should be back in for the next series.

  14. low life scumbag representing a low life scumbag city, seems fitting. I’ve actually heard a lot of vitriol from many philthy fans–they actually call into their radio stations and brag about hurting T Romo last year and hoping to do so this year, and the hosts eat it up encouraging it further–like i said, philthy is a low life scumbag city when it comes to sports, utter trash.

  15. Or they could line up and see who’s best the way it’s intended to be.

Injure someone for a game? A Game.

  16. I knew there was something wrong with Brian Baldinger when, two games into the season, he said “Carson Wentz is Peyton manning pre snap, Aaron Rodgers post snap. Dude says the most out of this line things. Need to put him in concussion protocol, he’s clearly delusional.

  17. Ya know this is a real shame I’m a cowboys fan of over 30 years and I would never ever wish injury on any eagles player these kind of statements here show you just how sad and pathetic a person’s life can be karma’s a bitch baldy

  18. for you commenting that this is pc policing, freedom so speech, etc. blah blah, you sound really ignorant. He works for the NFL was an ex player and doesn’t know the code? this is a business, guys in every locker room would vilify you if they knew you tried to intentionally tried to hurt a player, there are very few cheap shot artists in the league and they are well known. real men play football, they don’t take shortcuts by trying to injure a superior athlete, they beat him straight up or lose straight up.

  19. I think a couple of you don’t understand what “free speech” means. People in this County are free to say what they want, which means the government won’t punish them, it doesn’t mean you won’t face consequences from other sources (your employer, spouse, friends, ect.)

  20. I like Baldy. But he just put his far more prestigious and lucrative NFL jobs at risk. All because of what he says on his infinitely lower paying radio gig. Not smart. Also not smart is his dislike of Elliot.

  21. Whew Baldy, a bit much. Not many fans liked his mid drift exposed tux at draft but that’s his business the way he dresses. Sunday night will be second time I see him play was not impressed his first game. Must have something, he leads the league in rushing. Eagles play run tough so we shall see.

  22. We have become a bunch of wusses.
We used to run out of the tunnel ready to go to war for your teammates. Our job was to win and by doing so, you stopped the other team from doing what they do best.
Did we go out and cheap shot a guy low? No
Did we hit the guy while out of bounds? No
Those things would get your butt on the bench.
We made the opposing player not want to get back up. We wanted to make them think more about getting hit then executing the play they were running.
Now a days, lets just cut to the chase and either play flag football or run 100 simulations in Madden to see who is the winner.

  23. Well I for one think punishment it should be “tit for tat”…

Since Baldinger is Employed by the NFL…
his boss (Roger Goodell) should have been aware since he is in charge… be suspended at least one year without pay…

his Yes men should be suspended at least 6 weeks
    again without pay…

…league office fined $1 million… AND this result should be released Friday…say 15 minutes before League office closes…

  24. Elliott has been on the losing side of 2 ball games in the last season and a half.

The first loss was when Urban and the Buckeyes outsmarted themselves and decided to throw the ball all day instead of giving it to Zeke. Sparty won the game and knocked OSU out of the CFP picture.

The second loss was an opening day 20-19 loss to the Giants. Dan Bailey kicked 4 FGs. A pair of 50+ yarders along with a 23 and 25 yarder. Which basically means they were stopped at the NY 6 and 8 yard lines. Zeke had 20 carries for 51 yards.

Since that time, they have made it a point to get him the ball and have won all of their games.

While Baldinger was his usual bull-in-a-china-shop analyst, he did point out the obvious key to beating Dallas is to stop Elliott.

I’m an Eagle fan, but it is fun to see a team go “old school” and actually emphasize a running game. Keeps the clock running, keeps the Dallas defense fresh, and running usually holds up when the weather turns bad.

Will be interesting to see what happens to that strategy when Romo returns. Do they keep running, does Elliott hold up over the longer season against bigger, faster defenders, etc.?

But that’s down the road. This weekend, I’m just looking forward to a surprisingly important game between the new-and-improved Cowboys against the new-and-improved Eagles.

  25. Just telling it like it is. He never said they should hit him illegally. Of course a defender wants to hurt the opposing RB every time he tackles him.

  26. Disgusting. Injuries make the game worse for everyone paying to see it. You can’t win clean, you don’t deserve to win.

  27. So Baldinger states, ““This is the guy that we’ve got to take out of the game. ”
Then what are we to call the incentives that Def players get loaded into their contracts for registering x number of sacks a year?

Sounds like a bounty to me.
player X gets $x for hitting the QB hard enough to force them to the ground with the possibility of injuring the QB.

  28. Reason i don’t turn any NFL game on till kickoff. Every network the whole lot of them, yelling , screaming , and making statements such as that .

  29. Baldinger as a typical mouth breather. Never original as a color guy, just regurgitated what people saw on the screen, though he always ended his comments with a pause (for effect, to sound controversial). Glad he’s off Fox on the weekly broadcasts.

Merrill Hoge and him are cut from the same dumb jock fabric as Moose from Archie comics.

  30. Well, that’s the last you’ll be hearing from Mr.Baldinger…. He is Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnne. as far as ever working for the league goes.. Oh , wait….. It’s the NFL Network.

  31. Philly’s front seven needs to do a better job than Cincy or GB did against the Dallas Oline or it’s going to be a long day for them.

  32. Too many softies lol. I like Zeke because I’m an OSU fan. He’s not saying he wants him concussed he’s saying the defense should hit him hard and bang him up. And why wouldn’t you try dude is a beast this year and already playing like the best running back in the league as a rookie. He’s not saying hit him in the head illegally.

  33. “I think a couple of you don’t understand what “free speech” means. People in this County are free to say what they want, which means the government won’t punish them, it doesn’t mean you won’t face consequences from other sources (your employer, spouse, friends, ect.)”

    ****************************************************

Does that mean that everything he says at any time or venue is subject to him being punished?? I know he works for the media, but can he be fined for speaking his opinion everwhere he might go?? How about if he walks into a couple of fans who walk up to him on the street and strike up a conversation? What is he says that then and they record him? I think that is what happened years ago when Jimmy The Greek was fired from CBS because someone taped his “off the cuff” remarks about black athletes. That seems to be when it all began, where “what you say, can and will be used against you” by your employer or league. I think it is stupid to end a man’s career just because of frank statement. Hopefully, everyone will know he is just stupid and will let him go on and say idiotic things.

At least a President wasn’t assassinated in Philly, unlike Dallas. And then the dopes in Dallas allowed his assassin to be murdered, too.
I lived in many places because my dad was in the Army. Philly is no worse than any other city when it comes to sports fans. Most of the media who spread that garbage have never even been to Philly.
Several years ago at Giants Stadium, a fan was knifed in the parking lot after a game. I saw a car with Broncos flags on it torched after a game there too. And a guy who was drunk climbed into his car after a game there and hit another car head on, killing a little girl and injuring her parents. That one hardly got any press and you can bet her family was paid off handsomely so it wouldn’t go to court.
The reason that some fans act like nitwits at sporting events is alcohol. They think they have to get drunk and act like jerks. They should be thrown out and banned from attending games for life.

  35. I hope they fire him. That’s not expert analysis, that’s everything we teach kids not to do. And there’s a real problem in high school with cheap shots and such, so why a supposed adult like Baldy would encourage this is beyond stupid.

Beat a player on the field according to the rules
or quit whining about it. Trying to hurt someone so you can win is what losers do.

  36. Those sentiments are no less commonplace than they used to be, nor will they ever be less commonplace. You’re just not supposed to say it out loud anymore. As long as you do it within the rules, there is nothing wrong with trying to knock another guy out. It’s a violent game. Stop pretending to be surprised or offended when it’s played with violent sentiment.

  37. IF that happens, then expect 2 plays later that Martin will hold up that player while Fredrick goes low to end that player’s career.

I mean, man’s game. Right Philly fan?

  38. Heaven help the Eagles if Elliott gets injured in that game. Everyone is going to be accusing them of putting out a bounty.

They should try to stop Elliott the old fashioned way…..with solid tackling!

Look at what you just wrote buddy. You should really look in the mirror and what you just said was just as bad. So I guess your both low life scum bags

  40. Bounty on players , nfl does not fire this jerk, I am gone with this NFL crap, My kids watch this jerk

    —————–

Switch this statement’s team names and raise number of years to 45 and I’m saying the exactly same thing.

Come on, Baldy. You’re better than that.

  42. Dumbdinger hosts maybe THE worst sports show in Philly. Gargano is hard to listen to. And I change the channel as soon as I hear Baldinger. This was the same guy that said Danny Watkins was gonna be a leader/anchor of this O line. The bounty comments makes the stations job easy now to make some long needed changes.

  43. Wow, Baldy… I don’t know what’s worse; you crossing the line so blatantly or you figuring you could get away with saying such crap. Either way, you’re done.

  44. Brian Baldinger is pathetic and stupid. He brings nothing to the “analyst” role. It’s time to hit the bricks, pal, ’cause you are going OUT!

  45. Baldinger later said he was misquoted and actually meant that the Eagles should give Elliott some Bounty citing the fact that it is believed to be the quicker picker upper.

  46. Personally my favorite thing about Brian Baldinger is how he has zero self consciousness about talking with his hands flailing about with fingers pointing in every direction. That being said. If you haven’t figured out that your a sports analyst, and that words have meaning, past and present, coach.

  47. Look…football is a dangerous sport and every defensive player is aiming to injure the star player, in this case Elliott, who makes their job harder. This is nothing new. Ever seen who a big lineman or linebacker goes after to block after an interception? The Quarterback….and why? Is it because the QB is the one guy on the field who is strong enough and fast enough to tackle the guy who picked him off?

It’s because this no-neck Neanderthal has a legal, free hit on who is normally the offense’s most dangerous player.

Like I said…nothing new. And as fans we all applaud him as he’s being carted off the field but in our heads we’re thinking “YEAH BABY!!”

  48. So basically he’s saying his team can’t beat Dallas unless their best players are on the bench.

All these “manly men” talking about sissies probably never put in pads & helmet anyway.

  49. He’s just trying to show what a tough guy he is still is. Ex-jock jerks like him are one of the reasons that I don’t watch the pre and post game shows any longer.

  50. Do you have a hotline for betting odds because you were spot on. Well, almost. He had 22 carries, not 20. But you were also only 2 off in you predicted number of fumbles as well. But where you really hit it close to was number of concussions. You were only off by 1! That’s so close.

The yardage thing was really the only thing you struggled with. He had 96 rushing yards and another 52 receriving. Oh and he did the feed me thing but the Eagles defenders ate it themselves instead of making him do it

I’m sorry, I didn’t see the story whence it first came to pass, but I went back and searched for Baldinger when I heard he he one long and sideways.

It’s always fun to see some of these types of predictions that are presented so confidently as prognostication and land so far off. That’s one of the reasons I don’t make these types of predictions based solely on wishful thinking. Also, I’m not a tool
