Cam Newton wants to talk to Roger Goodell about “horsecrap” hits

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was relieved to get a win.

But he’s also tired of not getting the calls other quarterbacks get.

Newton was angry about a low hit by Cardinals defensive tackle Calais Campbell, and when asked about the hit initially, replied: “I’m speechless, . . . Next question.”

But when pressed, it was clear he feels like he’s not getting calls others might.

It’s really taking the fun out of the game for me,” Newton said , via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “At times I don’t even feel safe. And enough is enough. I plan on talking to commissioner [Roger] Goodell about this. And I don’t know what I have to do.”

While Newton takes a number of shots when he was on the run, the one that drew his ire Sunday was inside the pocket, and he went down awkwardly after Campbell hit him between the knee and ankle. He was angry on the field, especially after watching it on replay.

“I don’t think there’s a person that can go through what I go through and still keep their heads,” he said. “Hits to the head, that’s one thing. But when you’re not protected in the pocket, that’s another thing.

“The story of my life ever since I came in is, ‘Oh, oh, well, we missed that one. I’m sorry. I’ll try to get it.’ That’s bullcrap. As player in this league if we do something stupid we get fined. If you do something derogatory to somebody else, we get fined. I just can’t keep accepting, ‘Oh, we missed that one.’ Or ‘I apologize for doing that.’ Or ‘I didn’t see it.’ That’s horsecrap.’ . . .

“When I see other guys get calls, they don’t have to be no MVP. They don’t have to be this, that and the third of being this type of tier of a player. I look at how they get hit and for every hit that they get that’s called, I can match a hit in my career that I didn’t get called.

“I know people will probably take what I’m saying, some people will take it out of context, but you just have to look back and look at it from my vantage point. I play this game one way. I’m no different than anybody else. I’m trying to win football games.”

Newton has been looking for more help from officials for some time, and said last year that referee Ed Hochuli told him he was “not old enough” to get certain calls. His beef about certain hits is mitigated by the fact that when he’s running, he’s usually bigger than the guy chasing him. But he admitted a moment of fear that Campbell had injured him, and he’s clearly tired of taking that abuse.

  1. “Protect me so I can act like Superman and dance on defenses” Maybe act like you’ve got a bit of class and you’ll get some calls Cam.

  2. The hit to the knees in the pocket should have been called, technically.

But, pretty much every other hit he’s taken… That’s the risk you take when you run or leave the pocket. Suck it up or learn to play from the pocket. Or better yet… Retire.

  3. In his non-whiny way, Andy Reid used to whine similarly about the hits Vick took when he left the pocket.

    I never bought it.

Once a Qb leaves the pocket, the Q changes to an R.

  4. No you need to watch the film of him getting hit that was not flagged the same type of hit that put Tom Brady out for the year a few years ago the same type of hit that normal quarterbacks would have been carried off the field and likely their career end no I’m not going to say that he doesn’t get those hits because he’s black and he’s a physical guy

When Cam Newton stands in the pocket as a regular quarterback and he gets hit from the side act or below the knee and no flag

  5. Loved the live mic comment by Boomer on CBS after the video clip of Cam whining he is heard saying “whatever” coming back from the clip.

I agree completely. Stop being a synonym for a female dog there Cam!

  6. Yet if it was any of your favorite QBs getting hit you all would whine!

Cam is right, these refs are terrible with their inconsistent calls. And people wonder why ratings are garbage.

  7. Keep acting like you are Superman.
If you are so great, hot shot, why do you need teammates?
    Football is a team game.
Play acting gets you no support.

  8. I wish people would educate yourself before they make a stupid comment if you would educate yourself just a tiny bit you would realize that if he’s talking about happened while he was in the pocket but no you’re too busy with hating a man because he plays on a team you don’t like if this had happened to Pretty Boy Tony Romo or pretty boy Tom Brady or Pretty Boy Aaron Rodgers or the God of all quarterbacks Peyton Manning then this would be an open-and-shut case and the guy that did the hit and would like to be suspended for the year but it didn’t it happened to a black quarterback who is big and physically plays for the Carolina Panthers

  9. Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor got sand blasted 5 yards out of bounds by Hightower against NE today – no flag. I bet you won’t hear a peep about it though from Taylor, unlike with “superman”.

  10. What a crybaby Newton is. He is just like flopper James, cries to the league to help himself out. Just play the damn game and man up Newton. It’s no wonder Newton and James are the two most dislike athletes in the country.

  11. I am not a Cam Newton or Panthers fan but I have seen some of the NON Calls and he has a legitimate point.
If Rodger, Brady, Eli Manning come close to getting hits like him they automatically get a flag! Some QB’s get pampered.
I don’t know, possibly the Refs think if he runs like he does he is expecting, and can take harder hits. Compare the films of his non calls and the ones the Old Men and cry Babies get. They get flags 80% of the time, but it has to be a full on obviously intentionally dirty hit, and even then, Newton still doesn’t get the flag. I couldn’t believe the Broncos game and that hit today.
Like him or not, the Refs HAVE to enforce penalties equally.

  12. You had your little 15 min of fame it’s over go and live out the rest of your life with your goofy hats and your millions

  13. He come “Racism” at NFL QB the ONLY position in the NFL that isn’t dominated by African Americans.

Cam, you are 6’5 240lbs & you run…….Defenses are going to hit you & hit you hard. If you drop back & never run like 80% of NFL QB’s you won’t get hit like that.

What’s funny is before defenders started hitting him, he was unstoppable. Guess what the NFL is a VIOLENT sport…adapt & stop crying.

  14. If you watched how much Brady scrambled against the Bills today and how defenders would simply pull up instead of hitting him for fear of fines and penalties, you will begin to see Cam’s point.

  15. As much as I’d like to disagree with Cam I can’t.

The bottom line is that the Superman persona puts fans in the seats. Either they want to see him win or they want to see him lose. Either way they want to see him…

Roger Goodell is taking fans out of the seats.

Nothing this guy does is good for football and the sooner the owners realize this the faster America can get back to their favorite pastime.

    Go Pats!.

  16. It’s one thing to not like Newton’s antics because you feel like it is showboating. I get it. Panthers fans think he is like a big kid having a great time playing a game he loves and fans of the other 30 teams think he is being an ass. Fair enough. However, your opinion on his behavior should not cloud your judgement in discussing the types of hits Cam is upset about. Hits to the head “while he is in the pocket and clearly not a runner” as well as hits like the one today to his lower leg are clearly against the rules. These rules have come into existence exactly because unprotected quarterbacks have been hurt when allowed to be hit in these locations. I’m not advocating any conspiracy theories, but Cam definitely has a point. There’s just no way that a hit to Tom Brady’s leg like the one he took today wouldn’t have drawn a flag. If you are a true fan of the game and not just commenting on here because you can’t stand the way Cam behaves, then you know this to be true.

  17. I’m grading his new dance a 6.5 out of 10. He spent countless hours debating about it and practicing in the mirror and that’s what he came up with? Sorry, not good enough.

  18. Meanwhile Russell Wilson limps out there on 2 bad wheels, both caused by questionable hits and has never whined about it once and he’s 5′ 10″.

  19. This guy cries more than a new borne baby. Cam has won nothing as of yet, he showed his true self last year winning MVP and having special shoes to wear before SB thumping. There are QB’s that have won SB’s and they get no respect on hits and yet they never say a thing. Talk about a self entitled me player.

  20. Uh..NO Cam -It’s called quit acting like a cry-baby & you’ll attain some credibility with the officials – BESIDES, Who do you think you are anyway? Brady, Rodgers ??- neither openly whines at the podium about non-calls + they’ve both won Super Bowls so both have SOME credibility!

  21. Stay in the pocket if you don’t want to be treated like any other running back! QBs do get extra protection, IN THE POCKET. Buckle up if you want to run.

  22. Everyone on here who makes fun of Cam would be up in arms if the same hits happened to their QB. Make no mistake. You are all just glad that the refs have found a way to stop Cam and the Panthers. Except this week. Multiple bogus hits on Cam and we still trounced the Cards.

  23. I agree with Cam for the most part. It gets sickening watching certain QB’s get call after call while others don’t get anything and their hit was later, or illegal.

If you want any indication, just look at Green Bay’s quarterbacks. If you would fart in Aaron Munn’s direction, it’s a flag. If he throws a pass and it errant or his WR doesn’t catch it, a flag is thrown to set them up perfectly.

The same calls were made for years for Favre, until he became a Viking. If Favre were on the packers in that 2009 NFC Championship game, he would have been in the SB. However he was a Viking, and not a single illegal hit by the Aint’s was flagged.

Green Bay no matter who their QB is, is protected.

    #GreenbayBlackRhinos(because their protected)

  24. Iam gonna run and tell Rodger they are hitting me aka dry snitchin ,,,,,man up dude your bigger than half the people on the field big sissy Lala,, maybe defenses should have snitched to roger that your dabbing last year hurt their feelings and made football not fun for them too !

  25. Apparently there is crying in football. Roger will probably have some nice cookies and milk on hand for that chat

  26. while IN the pocket? You make zero sense.

Running QBs are never gonna get the same calls that pocket QBs do, nor should they.

  27. I think a lot of people are missing the point here. Newton is pointing out the inconsistent refereeing. I think most fans would agree this is a real thing and needs to be stopped!!! Ratings for the NFL are down and when you ask people why inconsistent refereeing is a big reason mentioned. It is more important for Newton to point it out than a Tyrod Taylor because he is the reigning MVP and the media will listen to him more. More players – well known players who the NFL needs – need to come forward and need to talk to Goddell in order for changes to be made. Because I think all fans can agree that Goddell’s inconsistent way of handling different teams and players has got to stop!!!

  28. Saints 2 penalties today….a motion penalty on first and goal for 5 yards, and a 5 yard false start during a 28 yard field goal attempt. Both had 0 effect on anything. The refs have agendas, just not sure if it’s within the group doing a certain game, or directed from Rodger.

  29. Cam is a great player, nobody can legitimately say otherwise. The low hit today should’ve been called. But he sounds like a whiny bitch here, and he whined to the official during the game. The refs suck and are inconsistent. Poor and inconsistent officiating in the nfl is a problem and a long standing tradition.

Cue Newton making it about race in 3….2….1….
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    You beat him to it.

  31. Man, there are really a lot of ignorant comments on here. Anyone who is trying to put Cam’s comments in the context of his running is either stupid or just hate’s Cam. He isn’t talking about the hits he takes when he is a runner. He is talking about the hits he is taking in the pocket. There are rules that govern the legal and illegal hits a quarterback can take while he is in the pocket as a passer. There is nothing in the rule book that says these passer protective rules don’t apply if you are 6 foot 5 and 240 pounds. They apply to any passer. So, to say Cam should not complain because he is a big guy is just ridiculous. A “big guy’s” acl is going to tear just as easily as a regular size guy if a 300 pound lineman lands on his knee. Try to take off your blinders for whatever team you pull for and look at the situation objectively. There are images online right now showing the hit Cam took to his leg today comparing to the one Brady took in 2008 that caused the rule change in the first place. You can clearly see it is the same type of contact in the same part of the leg. Don’t ignore facts just because you don’t like Cam or the Panthers.

  32. I’m not a fan of Cam. I think his ego and showboating go way beyond his ability as a quarterback. That said, he’s right about this. He took one of the dirtiest low hits I’ve ever seen a referee ignore in today’s game. If that guy isn’t fined I’ll be shocked.

Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor got sand blasted 5 yards out of bounds by Hightower against NE today – no flag. I bet you won’t hear a peep about it though from Taylor, unlike with “superman”.

Hightower was in bounds when he launched onto Taylor and they both ended up well out of bounds.

  34. Sorry millenials. He’s one of you and you have to own him. A whiney me first spoiled athlete. So much talent but so little to like about this man.

  35. Once again Cam is proving the point. When he’s winning he’s doing the superman pose. When he is losing he is whining about protection or has a towel over his head on the bench.
You’re a NFL QB. You decide to run, you become just a runner and are eligible to get hit. Deal with it and play the game.

  36. You can always count on the racists to show their true colors on these Cam Newton stories. Nowhere is race mentioned in his quotes. We’re talkign about a hit in the pocket that looked like hits that injured Carson Palmer and Tom Brady for the year. But yep, it’s all about race, lol.

  37. Cam. Down here Cam. I’m talking from the cheap seats, the nobodies. Why do you sulk offstage after a loss only to demand more spotlight when you win? Why? Are you SO insecure? Are you SO immature? You wear a towel like a fat man in a sauna in bad times and come out with feathered caps in good times. NOW you want your voice heard. Now. Why? Just marry a Kardashian already and be done with it, I for one, am tired of you.

  38. Cam has turned into the laughing stock of the league. The irony is that he’s probably the biggest, strongest QB we’ve ever seen, and he’s also the biggest cry baby we’ve ever seen.

    ————————————————————
Yes, I did watch it and I would have seen that except that’s not what happened. Brady had a clear field in front of him because defenses don’t account for the gazelle loping down the field. This game was men against boys. Amazing what happens when a QB can use both hands against a vaunted Rex Ryan defense in his own house.

  40. I’m not the biggest Cam fan, and I don’t much care for his showboating antics, but when he’s right, he’s right. And he’s right here. Should have been called. The lack of consistency across the board with the penalties is absolutely ruining the game and a major reason for the ratings drop. Its not the only reason (Ahem, kneeling for the anthem. Ahem, ridiculous fines) but its definitely one of the reasons.

Oh, and greed. Greed is also a big part of it.

  41. The Broncos beat up Brady and he just kept getting back up and running plays. In fact he had his team in a position to tie the game. The same Broncos beat up Cam and he was so afraid he would not even go after his own fumble. You are a baby Cam…..quit crying.

  42. I guess this conversation has to be after a Panthers win? We all know Newton is going to cry and pout, and make himself unavailable if they lose

  43. He come “Racism” at NFL QB the ONLY position in the NFL that isn’t dominated by African Americans.
    *****************************************************************************************************
Well one of 2 or 3, are there any Black place Kickers or Punters right now?
Black QB’s are mostly successful IF they are runners too,
Look at RG3 after he lost his “wheels” he is done.
We will have to see how Winston does.

  44. Poor primadonna baby! Respect the game and the refs will respect you. Hey Camera, will you be getting a new fashion ensemble for your meeting with Rog? Tell us about the hat, man. How many feathers in this one?

  45. valentino8100 says:

That’s what happens when, ya know, you leave the pocket and become a runner.

Except, ya know, when he isn’t a runner and he’s still standing in the pocket, which was the case for this particular play in question, when the defensive player dove at his ankles.
    Ya know?

  46. Loved the live mic comment by Boomer on CBS after the video clip of Cam whining he is heard saying “whatever” coming back from the clip.
    —————————————————————
Boomer never met a black QB that he didn’t have some shady remark to toss in their direction.
Listen to Boomer when he talks about Andrew Luck getting hits.
It’s night and day, it’s like Luck is a member of his family.
The thing is lately everyone (except the truly stupid) is noticing how Cam just doesn’t get the same calls.

  47. Uh lets see….I watched Tyrod Taylor get belted multiple times just today, I’ve seen Tannehill get popped repeatedly every game…umm watched Luck, Palmer & Ryan get drilled on many occasions today alone – BUT they let their coaches complain about it – they just dust themselves off & keep playing. Of course because their NOT Brady or Rodgers they won’t get a lot of those called. But you still won’t see any of them standing at a post-game podium win or lose & whine about the hits they took during the game.

  51. One thing is true whether he starts getting more roughing calls or not, and that is the more he runs the shorter his career becomes. It’s happening to all the running QB’s.

  58. Cam better be careful what he asks for. Goodell will tell Blandino to fix it and Cam will never get another touchdown. Cause after Blandino is done with it, every time the ball is snapped and Cam gets touched, it will be a sack.

Except that Brady whined to the officials after EVERY ONE of those hits in Denver and the refs told him hits against him ARE legal. I think Brady is the best QB in this generation, hands down, but don’t try to BS anyone that he’s some kind of tough guy. Brady was so tough he had the NFL create a “don’t touch QBs legs while they’re in the pocket” rule. I guess you can’t model UGGs if you’re walking like Elway, Namath, Bradshaw, Plunkett, or any other pre-2000 QB.
