Fine not expected for Josh Norman’s comments about officiating

A player can get fined for pretending to fire a bow and arrow. However, it’s still permissible to skewer the officials.

The NFL has reiterated to PFT via email that players face discipline for criticizing officials only when the player calls the official’s integrity into question.

In other words, a player can say about an official, “You suck,” as Norman did after Sunday’s tie in London. However, a player can’t say, for example, that an official is fixing the game or being bribed or otherwise pulling a Tim Donaghy.

So that’s the line, and a player hasn’t crossed it in a very, very long time. If ever.

  1. Can the official tell the player they suck? He’s complaining about calls but he was all over Jones all day and still couldn’t cover him. He should be happy he’s so overpaid for being average.

  2. Yeah, you’re right, Norman. Most of them do suck. And, sadly, NFL HQ appears to be okay with that.

  3. Well, not like many people are going to disagree with him on this one. The officials do suck. The NFL wants to know why the ratings are low, start with getting new refs. Then re-write the rule book, removing as much grey area as possible, then get rid of Goddell.

  4. The only ones more protected by the NFL than the officials are the Packers. Ironic that in turn, the officials protect GB.

It… it’s like the NFL is getting something right for once.

    How’d that happen?

  6. The officiating crew in London had a bad day. The NFL should make the officiating grades public to see how they are judged.

  7. Norman is right. He barely touched Green and gets flagged for it? And here I thought this was supposed to be FOOTBALL! In the NFL, no less! So we have games ending in ties, silly officiating, and King Roger can’t figure out why fans are turning away from the clearly overexposed NFL in favor of ANYTHING else. We have what, games on Sunday now starting in the morning all the way through Sunday night, Monday night games, THURSDAY night games. What next? Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Friday night??? I hate Goodell and his NY Jets staff! Go BRADY and the Pats. Stick it to him, Tom!!!!!!!!!
