Gronkowski gets his record-setting touchdown

The Patriots have scored 31 more points than they did the last time they played the Bills. More importantly for tight end Rob Gronkowski, he has set the franchise record for career touchdowns by a tight end.

Gronk scored on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady, which was Brady’s second 53-yard touchdown pass of the day. For Gronkowski, it’s his 69th career receiving score.

Brady has four touchdown passes, with Gronkowski, Chris Hogan, Danny Amendola, and Julian Edelman each catching one.

The 6-1 Patriots lead the 4-3 Bills, 31-17. Buffalo just cut the deficit from 21 to 14 with a 26-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

So who held the previous record one might wonder.
    ———————————————————
Totally agree. Half the fun of reading about someone breaking a record is the flashback about who set it.

I did some quick research on pro football reference dotcom.

Stanley Morgan was the Pats’ career TD catch leader. Morgan was a WR. Gronk broke Morgan’s record, which means he also has the Pats’ record for TD catches by a TE.

Ben Coates had 50 and Russ Francis had 28. So by end of next season, Gronk may have more catches than the #2 and #3 TE’s in club history.

  2. More stuff about Pats receiving records…

If one was to put this text string /teams/nwe/career-receiving.htm after pro-football-reference dotcom, there are some really interesting things.

Gronk can catch the yardage totals for Wes Welker (7459) and Troy Brown (6366). But he will need time to catch the leader.

Stanley Morgan had 534 catches for 10,352 yards. Averaged 19.4 yards/catch over 13 seasons. I remember he was good, but that is REALLY good!

Gronk has about 400 catches. He is tied with Jimmy Garoppolo for career fumbles (2).

  3. NOW Belichick is just toying with Rex – putting in Garopollo is just putting salt in the wound! Even the tv announcers were biased, listening to them comment, made me want Buffalo to lose even worse than what they’ve gotten so far!
Oh Well – EJ get’s to knock some rust off…so enjoy the remainder of your day Bills fans !

  4. first a 53 yard “dink” to Hogan… and now a “dunk” of what?… 53 yards to Gronk. Gotta love that system QB guy, whazzizname

  5. How’s Brady and the Patriots doing with properly inflated footballs? LOL. Last time the Patriots system scored NO points against the Bills. Today with Brady they score 41. It’s the system, right? LOL. Football fans are such sheep

  6. Hey Bills fans, remember earlier in the season when your team beat the Patriot’s 3rd string injured rookie QB and acted like they were the new Kings of the AFC East?

    Apparently the Patriots remember too.

Welcome back to your natural place in the AFC East food chain.

  7. Patriots are sheep, always have been always will be. The dink to Hogan, says so dubeicle, no clue about football, was a terrible pass, he had to stop. Wide open, any high school QB could of thrown that game.

IM SO PROUD TO BE A PATRIOT

In other words, I am so proud to live in my parents basement and I am so proud I never knew when the Patriots were losers, because I am 20 years old.

  9. I love posters that are so stupid, they don’t even realize they’ye getting destroyed. They just pick up the shovel and keep on digging the hole.

  10. Patriots are rolling to the playoffs. Remember all the hoopla in Buffalo a few weeks ago? Reality is setting in. Billswillneverwin.

  11. Thyroid went 50% and 183 yards!!!!!

    183 yards IN ONE GAME!!!!!

Those are great stats, for Bills fans.

  12. @billswillnevermove

Do you think Brady and BB did it on purpose? Beat the bills by exactly 16 points? Artistic. Maybe poetic would be a better word. Kind of like the games in 2003 when the score was 0-31, then 31-0.

  13. Don’t worry billswillnevermove

Buffalo will always had that “Beat the Patriots Broken-Thumbed 3rd String QB in 2016” Banner from this season.

    You earned it

No one can ever take that away from you, no matter how mediocre the team truly is

  14. All is well once again….
Brady looks like he could play another 10 years no problem….
Ahhhhhh… Let that one sink in!!!!

  15. I am kind of sick of reading judgemental posts about people that may either be struggling finacially or prudently trying to save money by living in their parents house.

No offense but you would think someone from Buffalo would have a little empathy.

  16. A shout out to Stanley Morgan whose TD record Gronk broke today. He was a pleasure to watch and deserved more mention as deserving of Hall of Fame status.

  17. OK Pats fans…

Now that the fully expected beatdown of the Bills by the Pats has occurred; please remember something:

The Bills team that was beaten today was missing: their top RB (McCoy), their top 2 WRs (Watkins, Goodwin), one of their better Safeties (Williams) and numerous other pieces.

If you can say “the Bills beat us a few weeks ago with us missing our best three players”, we get to say “the Pats beat us missing our 4 best players” after today. You don’t to make excuses about game 4 and then say we can’t…

And I find it fascinating that the two games wound up having a 16 point differential each time – leaving the Bills/Patriots scores for the season against each other tied at 41…

  18. Missing TBrady and playing a 3rd string, injured rookie QB is a little different than missing some good players, as important as Shady is. Not to mention the dancing and trash talking RRyan and the Bills did after the win in NEngland. Won’t hear that from the Pats. If the Bills score 16 in NE with Brady, they lose. Today, I don’t care who played for Buffalo. They still get smoked.

  19. @tedmurph

Pretty much EVERYONE was writing the Bills off before the first game – and folks like you were making jokes about how the Pats had the top 4 QBs in the AFC East.

What did Rex Ryan say after the game in Foxborough: “Every week, you try to have a plan to put your players in a position where they can be successful and I’ve always tried to do that, time in and time out. Just a lot of times we came up short,” Ryan said. “Today it was great to be on the other side of it” and ““Feels pretty good right now.”

Sure -that’s REALLY “trash talking” there…

And come on – man… Even you gotta realize that Lesean McCoy is as large a component of this year’s Bills team as Brady is for the “post suspension” Pats…

As I said, The Pats won. As expected.

But if you get to use the “injured 3rd string quarterback line”, then we get to use the “missing BOTH our 1st string RB, who the offense is built around, AND our 1st and second string WRs…”

And BTW – “getting smoked” is a shutout at home. Which this wasn’t…

Wonder how many PED’s Nicovich is hopped up on today, the Lance Armstrong of the NFL.

You are correct. We can not use that excuse because you had many injured players today. We however are in 1st place and you’re not.

  22. ltb – oner more thing.

At least you’ve got the guts to admit what team you root for, unlike about 98% of the Pats haters, among whom I don’t count you – You’re just frustrated you can’t beat us with any consistency – as of now Brady is 26-3 against you.

  23. Reading most of these comments is so comical. I’ll bet the average age of you kids is about 13. When you grow up maybe you can actually make intelligent & impartial comments about the game without waving your favorite team’s banner.
    Nah, it’ll never happen.
