Trump takes credit for NFL ratings drop, blames Kaepernick, too

The conclusion of the election apparently will make the NFL’s ratings great again. Sort of.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump, at a Sunday rally in Colorado, offered two theories for the league’s struggles to get people to enjoy pro football games on TV in the same numbers they did a year ago.

“The NFL is way down in their ratings. And you know why? Two reasons. Number one is this politics they’re finding is a much rougher game than football and more exciting, and this — honestly we’ve taken a lot of people away from the NFL. And the other reason is [Colin] Kaepernick.”

The election likely isn’t hurting the NFL’s ratings significantly, because the election isn’t affecting college football ratings. As to the national anthem protests, it’s hard to separate those who claim they’re not watching as a way to voice displeasure with the protests from those who actually aren’t watching for that reason.

Whatever the reasons, the NFL has the resources and the incentive to identify them, and to pursue measures aimed at pumping the numbers up.

  1. But you’re not going to report on that fraud Hilary? The more you talk about Trump, the more ppl vote for him. Can’t wait until he’s the next president!

  2. I’ve been a diehard fan since I was a kid. This year is just different, the game is boring. I will admit that I’ve also turned off games with I’ve seen players taking a knee. But I think the real problem is the game isn’t as fun as it used to be. Goodell really has taken his toll on the cash cow. I’ve been watching waaaay less this year than I normally would.

I’d pay big money to watch Goodell and Trump in a knife fight over ratings.

Really Goodell and just about anyone.

  4. .
The Donald only cares about The Donald.
Big money from donors to increase his own wealth.
After he loses he keeps raking in the dough with TrumpTV, where they will just repeat everything fox says.

  5. True,

Kaepernick can continue his protest in the Arena League next year.

Our new President Donald J, Trump will be welcoming Tom Brady and the New England Patriots SB 51 Champions to the White House in 2017

  6. Trump may be the only person alive with a bigger ego than Ham Newton. I don’t know how anyone could vote for the lying windbag.

  7. Ratings are down for many reasons, ADD ONE MORE: Get the fans to invest nearly FOUR hours in the Washington-Cincinnati game and then cut the feed. I hate the NFL right now.

  8. One need look no further than corrupt owners employing a corrupt commissioner who tries to force parity and thus ratings by framing the best player on the best team

Sure, Roger’s motivation might have been to give another AFC team a shot – as Brady clogs up the Super Bowl every other year

However if you’re John Mara, your players get mandatory domestic violence 6 game suspensions reduced to just one

NFL fans now know that 345 Park Avenue isn’t just trying to fix NIH concussion research – it’s also trying to fix the outcome of the NFL season

  9. Correct The Record is active in the comment section thats for sure.

  10. It doesn’t help ratings when you have an exciting, close game in London this morning that goes into overtime. They show 2 overtime plays then cut away to the Arizona Cardinals/Ravens game. Dope move on their part.

I am no trump supporter but you just made a case for him not against him. He was rich long before he entered the political arena. The Clintons made their money FROM politics, think about that for a minute. No matter which one of them wins we all lose.

  12. I’ve watched significantly less NFL this year. My only reason? NFL HQ is corrupt. I have zero faith that the game is on the up-and-up.

  13. This guy is the biggest clown out there and folks want him as prez, please stop it!!!

  14. Trump’s a crazy, ignorant butthead and I’m mad he keeps trying to contaminate the sport of football with his idiotic opinions. If he gets to be president we’ll be the laughingstock of the world

  15. Trump living in his own private world, hopefully after Nov.8 th he will remain and that world and night be going to the White House.

  16. Viewers arent’ watching, for two reasons

    1. Goodell is an Ass.
    2. People have pulled the plug on cable.

But mostly because Goodell is an Ass.

    “Goodell is a crook.”

But you know what? In the end all that really amounted to was Brady watching his team go 3-1 while relaxing on a beach in southern Italy with a supermodel before going right back to destroying every team in front of him. And the beat goes ooonnnnnnn, and the beat goes on.

  18. Trump really loves making things about him. He has a history of doing it, like when Travolta’s son died.

  19. I think I read a email that Hillary was gonna win in a landslide, so what difference at this point does it make?

  20. Of course he does. Trump thinks everything revolves around him. He’s only running for office or one reason – Donald Trump. He just wants more publicity so he can get his TV network off the ground. He really doesn’t care about winning. Why else would he do and say such moronic things. It’s a real shame to deprive the American public of a genuine sincere candidate for the highest office in the land.

Pretty interesting, isn’t it? The NFL is fighting to get fans to watch their product at all but especially to generate interest in England. And the first time they get a game that would hold anyone’s interest at all, they cut away. Why? Because they already counted you. As far as they are concerned, you didn’t matter any more because a lot more money is generated from from the ads in the Cardinals/Ravens game than the game in England.
    Show me the money!

  22. Of COURSE he took credit for something he didn’t deserve. That’s what he does. That’s what he ALWAYS does. Nothing has changed for the last 30 years.

He’s declared victory for things like the USFL, when he was fined Millions for racial discrimination in his RE dealings, when he lost hundreds of millions in Atlantic City, Trump Jet, Trump University, etc etc etc. When he was asked about all the vendors he’s stiffed over the years. Those hard working subcontractors from the middle class he portends to represent. You know what he replied? “That’s because I’m a smart businessman”.

So I guess his plan is to create all these new jobs, and then not pay them for their work. THAT is what’s consistent for Donald Trump.

God help us if he’s elected. He won’t be the worst president we’ve elected. He’ll be the last one.

  23. I’m with all the people who see Donald for what he is. I miss Faith Hill on Sunday night football.Bill
