Bears dominate up front, run away from Vikings

Getty Images

The Bears overwhelmed the Vikings’ offensive line Monday night, and rookie running back Jordan Howard had his biggest game as a pro.

The Vikings had little answer for Howard or anything else, and the Bears rolled to a 20-10 victory. They took a 20-3 lead into their fourth quarter.

In addition to a second-quarter touchdown run that made it 13-0, Howard had an early 69-yard run and also had a 34-yard catch. He finished with 153 rushing yards on 26 carries and caught four passes for 49 yards.

The Bears sacked Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford five times. The Vikings punted on seven of their first eight drives and were 2-of-13 on third down.

The Bears held a 13-3 halftime lead. Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery caught his first touchdown pass of the season in the third quarter to extend the lead to 20-3.

Howard’s 69-yard run, his 34-yard catch and a 34-yard catch by Jeffery stand as three of the five biggest plays the Vikings have surrendered all season. The Bears finished with 403 yards of total offense and converted 7-of-14 third downs.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, playing for the first time in five weeks, threw for 252 yards, didn’t throw an interception and was sacked just once. Bears tight end Zach Miller had seven catches for 88 yards.

The Vikings fall to 5-2. The Bears improve to 2-6.

  1. The Vikings played the entire game without a starting offensive line! My Grandma could have sacked Bradford…..

  2. Well injuries finally caught up. there is ZERO chance the Vikes do anything this season with that line. I never thought I would long for Matt Kalil and Phil Loadholt like I am right now…. terrible, worst ever. Vikes are done

  3. Beatdown by the Bears — Cutler made plays on 3rd down, the Vikes D couldn’t make the stops when needed, and the offense certainly is stagnant (or non-existent) with the lousy O-line. Not going to make injury-related loss excuses like I’ve heard elsewhere — a loss is a loss. Congrats to Bears fans.

  4. Um…that’s your team, vikings? That’s the team we’re all supposed to fear? At least with this kind of play you’ll fall into a nice first round draft pi–. Oh right, I forgot.

  5. I could be a better O-Lineman than what the Vikings have on that team. I wonder when they’re going to figure out they’re no longer on their bye. No sense of urgency whatsoever. The D gets exhausted. Thank god the next game is at home- not holding my breath on that one though. Congrats Bears fans you guys looked good tonight- especially Cutler.

250dollarnflowner says: Oct 30, 2016 8:09 PM packers can’t beat good teams. lost the tie breakers to Dallas, Vikings and now Atlanta. ouch!!

    —————

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh. The Vikings just got it HANDED TO THEM by the Bears.

No one is buying your hype any longer, even though the refs kept you in the game the first half.

The Vikings can’t even beat bad teams.

I hope you’ve enjoyed first place, because it won’t be yours for much longer.

    >

  7. Vikings got it handed too them, congrats to the bears and their fans, they out played the Vikings from start to finish, if Norv Turner is the O.C come tomorrow then the Vikings are not serious about fixing some of their offenses problms

  8. The drop in watching football has just gained another fan. I don’t see any sense in the way this one was refereed.

  9. Zimmer really coached these guys up over the bye week. This performance should quiet the PFT purple crew……. I doubt it will, but it should. Good Game Bears.

  10. LOL, maybe going forward the Viking fans won’t be so quick to jump on calling their next opponent terrible and preemptively declare victory (nevermind, forgot we were talking about Viking fans for a second, they never learn).

  11. Nobody is surprised that the Vikings lost except the Vikes and their fans, who think the Super Bowl is in September.

  12. This could be the most frustrating two weeks of Viking football I have ever seen. Wow. That’s awful o line play.

  13. Those vike fans that have been claiming the division is “all wrapped up,” may want to rethink that.

Like I said, running a mouth after 7 weeks is really silly and more often than not you end up with foot in mouth. Any team could still win it.

I will not bash on Min like their fans do to GB, but maybe they will be humbled a bit.

Cheer up though, losses arent the end of the world. Even to 1 win teams.

    toodlez

  14. So much for our “vaunted” defense. Maybe they should get one of the Joe tackles at the trade deadline (Thomas or Staley).

  15. well it was fun while it lasted, fellow vikings fans. this game was not an some aberration; the first five were all aberrations. the vikings offense was exposed last week against Philli and this week their defense was exposed as frauds. i’ll be surprised if they win another game.

time to shelve this team with the rest of the garbage minnesota sports teams not worth any of our time.

so long, packer fans. you were right again.

  16. I said early last week “Cutler is back. Be honest. Would anyone really be surprised if the Bears beat the Vikings?” Got some thumbs down, but this isn’t a surprise to me. The Vikings are not good.

Let’s see, what are the appropriate phrases Vikings fans use, “Your Halloween tears taste like sweet nectar”, “No excuses”, “The win was against the Bears and doesn’t count” – oh wait, can’t use that one here. , “not ready to play with the big boys”, “defense wins games”, etc. Luckily the Vikings have a big upgrade at QB or they’d have been shut out. I hope Viking trolls enjoyed that October trophy. This division race is far from over.

  17. But but but the Vikings have Zimmer and his team (especially D) would never quit on him right? WRONG! Vikings had no interest in tackling Howard when they knew the run was coming. That was an embarrassment which is commonplace for the Vikings in prime time last couple years.

At least they can rely on the highest paid OLine in football.

  18. I think that maybe probably perhaps this will affect the Vikings being #1 in the several power rankings that had them ahead of the Cowboys and Patriots.

  19. Embarrassing.

2 weeks to prepare for Philly = dominated.

Extra day to prepare for 1-6 Bears team = destroyed.

Mike Zimmer was outfoxed by a 1st Year O-Coordinator named Dowell Loggains.

Vikings are pretenders right now. No two ways about it.

  20. Well, well, well. What happened with all the hype about the Minnesota Vikings? I don’t know if they should be in the top 10 in the rankings this week.

  21. Wow, I never saw that coming. I thought we were contending for a superbowl and now we are actually behind the Packers with a divisional loss and a scary game coming up at Lambeau late in the season. I cant believe how bad our offense has been exposed, Zim was right, our offensive line is soft. Oh well, we had a great first half of the year. Im looking forward to the draft, I hear there are some solid guards and tackles coming up next year.

  22. Boy that Zim is a motivator.
McCarthy puts up 32 pts. against a winning team without 2 WRs and 2 RBs, and Vikings go 3 qtrs with 3 pts. against wounded Bear.
Vikings are who we thought they were.
Ariani plus aliases don’t merit thinking about at all.

  23. The Vikings are going to need some sort of miracle to win more than half of the remaining games. The O-Line is just awful. The D didn’t look great, but they still only gave up 20. That’s a very winnable game if the Offense does anything at all

  24. Did they really finish the game 5 minutes ahead of schedule?! Good golly, they could have easily squeezed in another 40 minutes of commercial breaks, like last night on Sunday Night Football!!

  25. Packers fan.
    We beat the Bears.
    Vikings didn’t.
I’m not going to rub it in and I wanted the Bears to win..
Bears beat the Vikes and I’m going to let that do all the talking for me.

  26. sorry I meant offense, when the Packers beat the Bears you Viking fans said no big deal its the Bears now you lost to the Bears so lets hear from Ariani and Cody what happened?

  27. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but games like this restore my faith in the NFL.

EVERY expert hands the NFC to the Vikings after a strong start…..

And now they look suddenly average again.

  28. Okay, I don’t have a dog in the fight, but that game sucked. And could we please stop the love affair with The Vikings? They’re awful. That offensive line might be one of the worst I’ve ever seen. I really thought Minnesota would win. Why did I think that, you ask? Because The Jaguars went to Chicago and won. The Jaguars! I’m down to one team in my suicide league. Thanks Vikes, you absolutely suck out loud. That is all.

  29. This D was good last week, went cold this week and got gashed by Howard. Their offense which seemed adequate to start the season now looks really poor. What an upset for the 1-6 Bears. Even home field no one really gave them a chance. I never give Cutler his due, not a fan of his to put it nicely but he played great and made an elite D look average (with the help off Jay Howe and a renewed Jeffery).

  30. I knew this would happen! We better Trade for Joe Thomas and get Loadholt out of retirement! By the way is Sullivan still available!

  31. Amazing what Cutler did with a chipped shoulder, some time to make a play, all while complemented by a dominant def…..Haters gon hate, but y’all can go smoke that show he put on the National stage tonight- Go Bears

  32. OH my, what an awful game by the Vikes – two weeks in a row! Tired of seeing Thielman and Diggs whine every time they run down the field for a pass. Just quit whining. Vikes offense is absolutely putrid. Getting beat by one of the worst teams in football tells me this team is way overrated this year, including their defense, which got lit up by Jay Cutler! Doh!

  33. Vikings were outplayed in every phase of the game.

I’m not a bears fan, and probably the only Cutler fan, but he looked good in his first game back. Unless they plan on drafting a qb of the future, which I don see in this draft class, they would be wise to keep him another year or two.

  34. The NFL is such a mess that “Any given Sunday” has now become “Every given Sunday”. It’s OK to have upsets every now and then but the inconsistency is so irritating. I mean inconsistency at being good like the Patriots because there are quite a few team that are consistently bad.

  35. That was painful to watch. They obviously violated the Six “P” Principle, which states: Proper Planning Prevents P***-Poor Performance.

    And I’m a Vikings fan.

  36. We know the Vikings O-line is soft, and Zim will need to repeat that tonight. But now we know the true identity of the defense, playing against a 1-6 team with a rookie center and missing both guards. “Soft” is a term Zim can throw around to all position groups, and he should call himself soft since he makes the defensive calls.

    Still
    Keep
    On
    Losing!!!!! SKOL!!!!

  37. The offense looked horrible.
Where is this genius Turner that we’ve heard about? He had a week to work out these problems & they have gotten worse.
The defense couldn’t get to Cutler with 2 guards being replaced? Where is the team that was 5-0?

  38. That Garbage O-Line is about to ruin the Vikings’ best chance… They might end up being the 2016 version of the Falcons of they don’t figure out that O Line ASAP

  39. I only planned to watch this mismatch until the Bears were hopelessly eating dust, but the Monsters of the Midway showed up and spanked those Queens.

  40. are the Viking trolls more upset about the beatdown they just got from Da Bears or the fact that they can’t go on PFT and taunt Packer fans? sklol.

  41. This is the real Minnesota Vikings. Bradford is a statue and it now looks like a real stupid move by the Queens front office to give up what they did for the guy. There goes having a decent offensive line for years to come.

Btw thetruthstings, you have no cap space to get Joe Thomas. Gotta live with it. Pack wins the North.

  42. All the Vikings fans clamoring for an O-line trade forget that they’re up against the salary cap.

You’re already all-in for this year, guys. There isn’t more improving to be done. If what you have can’t get it done then that’s that. Blame your GM.

  43. Let me guess Viking fans…. the Ref that got hurt early in the game and made the crew end up missing “All those calls” making the Bears win right?

  44. What does Cam really think will come out of this meeting with Goodell? Like, now that you’ve publicly complained and met with the commissioner after dogging all of his refs? You’re gonna get all the calls?

  45. Any team beating what is left of the Bears very average team is no big deal, any team losing to what is basically the bears JV team is sad!

  46. Everyone Jordyn nelson misses or drops a ball, him and Sharon Rodgers screem, throw their hands up looking for a flag. IT’S about a third of their offense. PACKERs and Rodgers Era is on the decline and Meathead Mccarthy is still their coach.

  47. My word. The lack of Vikings fan presence in this article is euphoric. I wonder how many rocks had to be cleared for Ariani to make it back to his home? I’ve waited awhile to really lay it in to the Vikings fan base after all the crap they’ve given us over the past year and a half. WELL NOW IT’S PAYBACK TIME. YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE CAN’T BLOCK YOUR RUNNING GAME IS PITIFUL SAM BRADFORD IS A LOSER, ALWAYS HAS BEEN YOUR 1ST ROUND PICK WAS WASHED DOWN THE DRAIN AND MAN THAT DEFENSE REALLY LOOKED TERRIFIC DIDN’T IT. Wow, who would’ve thought, after all that talk, the Vikings would find themselves back in that position they’re so familiar with?

  48. Congrats to the Bears on playing a very good game.

They dominated from start to finish.

I was expecting Cutler to show some rust after being out for several weeks. What I saw was what looks to be the best QB the Vikings have faced all season.

  49. I never give Cutler his due, not a fan of his to put it nicely but he played great and made an elite D look average (with the help off Jay Howe and a renewed Jeffery).

Can you be called an elite D when a 1-6 Jay Cutler let team beats you like a rented mule?

  50. This was, I think, the 10th straight prime time NFL game I have fallen asleep watching. Thank you, NFL – you have treated my insomnia far better than my Ambien pills ever did.

Thank God the World Series is on tonight!

  51. Everyone Jordyn nelson misses or drops a ball, him and Sharon Rodgers screem, throw their hands up looking for a flag. IT’S about a third of their offense. PACKERs and Rodgers Era is on the decline and Meathead Mccarthy is still their coach.

Don’t you love when packer fans say “we” , referring to themselves as if they were playing the game.
    Lmao….

  52. The whole Jay Cutler story. Some days (like last nite) he plays like he is worth 18 million a year. We get the great Jay. On many games we get the inconsistent throw an interception or fumble Jay at the crucial time in the game. Which is the real Cutler?

  53. I get a chuckle because it was not less than 2 weeks ago, the Viking trolls were out in force discounting a Packer victory over this same Bears team, dismissing it as nothing.

What a difference a week can make. From what I saw last night, trading away a boat load of picks for Bradford might someday rank right up there with the Hershel Walker trade. And signing bonuses and cap space devoted to the offensive line before the season began has come back to haunt the front office that has little wiggle room to address the team’s needs at this point in the season.

It’s a cliche but so true, the NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint. That 5-0 start might just be a mirage.

  54. Everyone Jordyn nelson misses or drops a ball, him and Sharon Rodgers screem, throw their hands up looking for a flag. IT’S about a third of their offense. PACKERs and Rodgers Era is on the decline and Meathead Mccarthy is still their coach.

Well considering that the injury excuse would be completely invalid for your argument, I would hope you wouldn’t. Losing your starting QB and RB certainly wouldn’t qualify, seeing as how it happened within the 1st two weeks of the season, and you were already crowned “King of the North” and maybe the best team in football. When you lost your other top RB, two of your top 4 WR’s, and then your top 3 CB’s, then come to talk to me about the “injury excuse.” You got worked this game, your team has been exposed, deal with it.

  56. I think this game was pretty telling, and doesn’t paint a great picture for the Vikes. My Pack definitely has its flaws, and they need to be addressed (most notably their secondary). However, this is directly related to injuries, and they should be getting healthier in the next couple of weeks. The Vikings offense has clearly been exposed. Without a couple of garbage time TD’s, they would have put up 6 points over the past 2 weeks.

This has been the argument i’ve had with several of my Viking fan buddies this season. No one can dispute the Vikings defense can be stellar. However, they need to be at the top of their game each and every time out to give their team chance a win. It’s been proven when they’re not (this week and last week), they struggle to score points, and will struggle to win. At least the Packers are far more balanced on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. They don’t need their offense or defense to dominate a game in order to give themselves a chance to win. Say what you want about who’ve they played recently, but it’s becoming pretty obvious that the Pack’s offense it starting to click, despite their injuries. They will get healthier, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least bit if they’re back at the top of the division by season’s end.

  57. Good for the Packers but bad at the same time because if the Vikings continue to play this way, McCarthy and Capers might be in GB for another year.

  58. Zimmer should probably publicly call out the defense for being soft. Because, you know, it worked so well to motivate the offense this week.

  59. That was easily the best game the Bears have played all season. I kind of expected the Bears DL to make hay against that Vikings front but what shocked me was how porous Zimmer’s D was against the run. And that with both of Chicago’s starting OGs out of the lineup.

The Bears D looked good overall and if they can add a stud CB in the coming draft and avoid health issues they will be legit next season.

Maybe a “consultant” has indeed been brought in to assess the Bears, may he hasn’t, but in any event there was a noticeable lift in energy and focus among Fox’s troops compared to what has been there most of the year. From a Bears fan perspective it was great to see.

    Great idea!

Oh crap, the Vikes have no cap room. Well, at least next year they should be able to expand their cap space a bit since they won’t have to worry about signing a first-rounder.

  61. Who didn’t see this one coming? I’m sure this is just a bump in the road to the Vikings 8-8 season. Man they won the Offseason and the September Super Bowls!
So the new stadium is worth about five wins, then they go back to being the Vikings. I still think they have a great chance of finishing last in their division, even after their surprising 5-0 start. You can all start making your usual January vacation plans.

  62. Bears played great. As much as the Vikings trolls deserve what they get, in the end the Vikings will be irrelevant again, while the Bears deserve credit for playing a great game.

One thing for the Bears to improve on is for Hicks to pick up loose balls instead of celebrating. He did it twice and one of the times it was ruled a fumble.

  63. As a Vikings faithful, I’ll take the troll arrows. Packer fans, enjoy yourselves watching Minnesota run out of depth and out of gas. That’s all you’ll have to cheer about because your Twinkie of a team isn’t going anywhere this year. We’re hurt, You’re soft.

That said, a very average Detroit team is likely to do the same thing to Minnesota next Sunday. This is a far cry from a first place team right now.

Please Rick, no trades. Let this stupid season play itself out.

  64. “Packer fans, enjoy yourselves watching Minnesota run out of depth and out of gas. That’s all you’ll have to cheer about because your Twinkie of a team isn’t going anywhere this year. We’re hurt, You’re soft.”

Well, to be honest, both teams have a lot of injuries…. but I’d take your upgrade at QB and injuries to Peterson and a few others instead of the Packers injury situation. This past week both Packer RBs were out injured. The top replacements are WRs moved to RB, and they were both out injured. So you can look at that as missing 2 top WRs that are also RBs that were needed but unable to play. The starting TE was out, Clay Matthews was out, the top 3 CBs were out and then the top CB left standing was slightly injured during the game.

No excuses, remember? I expected both the Packers and Vikings to lose, so no surprise in either game. Honestly, though, the Vikings look really bad. Better for you trolls to grasp reality early and not have your hearts broken later.

Oh okay I’ll keep this in mind. So when the Packers have injuries (piling up might I add), it’s no excuse for them losing a close game. However, when the Vikings have injuries, it’s okay to lose because they’re “running out of depth and hurt” and the Pack is “soft.” Got it.

  66. Mixed feelings for sure: on one hand, it’s a win, on the other, it has moved us up in the draft.

There is some talent there. If they could field a team that had both starting Gs, Royal, White, their top 3 or 4 DBs (who WERE those guys last night??!), Goldman ……. I wonder how’d they look?

I know Jay is out next year, but how do you address QB issue?

  67. where’s ariani? over 120 comments and none from him? hahahaha. I’ll remind you of this on every bunk comment you make from here on out. talks the talk. hides when his team loses in spectacular fashion. but I’m am not surprised. its to be expected. shut up forever.

  68. Vikings what a bunch of cry babies .. Same trolls were ripping on the Packers who have twice the injuries the queens have about not using excuses.

    1. Xavier Rhodes according to Viking trolls were asking for Xavier Island .. That dude holds on every play and still sucks

    2. Queens dominating defense which had no injuries got smoked

The 5 week dynasty is over but you still have the twins and timberwolves .. SKOAL

  69. Minnesota’s defense was never elite. The team as a whole was greatly overhyped and that was mostly based on them going in to Charlotte and beating the Panthers, before they were exposed as frauds too. I’ll be happy to not see people talking about the Vikings D as being anything special. So cute how they played well for 5 games against mostly lousy teams and suddenly they were historically great or best in the league.

Until their D carries them to a super bowl (denver) or leads the league in defense for 4 straight years (seattle) you have nothing to say. Vikes are losers and frauds.
