Vikings kick the tires on running back Jonas Gray

The Vikings went from having a former MVP at running back to being next to last in the league in rushing, so they’re clearly still looking for answers.

According to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com, the Vikings had former Patriots running back Jonas Gray in for a workout Friday.

Gray also worked out for the Dolphins this week, as he’s making the rounds trying to hustle up a job.

It seems like forever ago when Gray ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots against the Colts, because he quickly fell off the map and hasn’t run for more than 62 yards in a game or really held steady work since. He’s spent time with the Dolphins and the Jaguars.

The Vikings haven’t gotten what they’d hoped from Matt Asiata, Jerick McKinnon and even Ronnie Hillman, ranking 31st in the league with just 71.9 yards per game. Only the Giants are worse in that category.

  1. I like Gray better than Hillman (from what we’ve seen of Hillman thus far).

If Gray can get to the meetings when he’s supposed to, he’d be an upgrade.

Whatever happened to Gray? It’s like he’s being black balled. The kid has skill’s.
    ================

Blackballed? When NE cut him he was signed to their practice squad by the ‘Phins within a week, activated, released and signed again by them before being claimed by Jax who waived/injured him in August then released him. He’s had a couple of looks since. That’s a long way from blackballed, just ask Ray Rice or Greg Hardy.

  3. But I thought the team was BETTER without the best RB in the game, Vikings fans?

They are. Do you really think the Vikings miss APs 1.6 yards per carry? They miss McKinnon more than AP. But, they’ll be even better now that the leagues worst offensive coordinator is gone.

  4. Once again Vikings fans: Other than Diggs, and Rudolph (when he’s not hurt), Your team does not have ONE offensive starter that is above replacement level.

You spent your premium draft capital on defense. The picks you did spend on offense have been universal busts, and your dip into the “older is better” FA pool has backfired.

You have no answers – because there aren’t any out there.

Enjoy the well deserved losing season.

  5. Packer fans act as if their offense is loaded. There’s a reason their so easily contained by good defenses…

    Aaron Rodgers and….? Nobody..

I’m not sure what you consider replacement level, but I can’t help but notice that the Vikings’ starting QB still has a higher passer rating than the Packers’ starting QB. I’d consider that above replacement level. I also like Jerrick McKinnon a lot more than Knile Davis or whoever you’re plugging in this week. Also, Joe Berger was rated the best center in the NFL last year so he’s probably better than replacement level, too.

I might furthermore note that defense wins championships, so I’m pretty happy with the players we’ve drafted for that defense. How’s your defense doing?

By the way, take a look at the standings sometime. That losing season we deserve isn’t happening anytime soon.

They spent premium draft picks to fix a defense that was horrible just a few years ago. It was working well enough that they won the North last year and got them off to a 5-0 start this year. Still a better record than the Packers, who don’t have much of an offense outside of Rodgers. And what are Packers trolls crowing about? They lost 2 in a row to the Vikings, a team they say is horrible, what does that say about the Packers?

  8. I really liked Presely and Ham albeit it was preseason. Would have been nice maybe to hold on to one of them. Turner kept running McKinnon up the gut which is not his strength. Maybe the change at OC will help the running game get going. Asiata is only a redzone guy and Hillman has looked like hes running in mud. The O-lone is a big issue and unless a miracle happens I cant see us getting more than 100 yards a game against anyone
