Report: No discipline expected for ref Walt Anderson or crew

AP

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has been fined for what NFL senior vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said should have been an unnecessary roughness penalty during last Monday night’s victory over the Bill, but the officials who should have called the foul will reportedly avoid league discipline.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that neither referee Walt Anderson nor any members of his officiating crew will be disciplined for the way they handled a series of events at the end of the first half. After Sherman, who was offside, plowed into Bills kicker Dan Carpenter in a dead ball situation, officials stood over the ball to reset it while the play clock ran down.

The Bills were flagged for delay of game and missed the ensuing 54-yard field goal, but Anderson and Blandino both said that the clock should have been reset following Sherman’s offside penalty.

While the missed penalty on Sherman has generated more attention, the inattention to detail regarding the game clock may have been the bigger miss by Anderson and crew. Penalties for actions on the field do get missed by human beings and replay isn’t permitted to offer a helping hand, but the more mundane administration of things like the game or play clock have resulted in discipline in the past. Side judge Rob Vernatchi was suspended for a week after 18 seconds ran off the clock erroneously in a Chargers-Steelers game last year.

Anderson and his crew have a scheduled week off in Week 10 and they will still be graded on their performance by the league, which grants postseason assignments to officials that have been rated the highest over the course of the season.

  1. Of course not. The NFL protects their refs and the refs can do what they want with no checks or balances. I do not agree with total autonomy that the refs have but the NFL’s decision does not shock me

  2. Of course not. That would be admitting fault. These refs either need to shape up or be replaced. Horrible no-calls this year we are seeing probably has something to do with the ratings too.

  3. Head ref should know the rules.Anyone can miss

a play but 7 off missed it.Again NFL protecting

Seahawks. Games handled properly they are

    under 500

  4. We were all sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the decision from the NFL. Does anyone care whether they get fined or suspended? It changes nothing, just like when blowhard Blandino wastes everyone’s time trying to explain controversial calls after games.

  5. That was one major screw up, and everyone but the refs knew it. I didn’t particularly care which team won, but the Bills got hosed big time.
These were not complicated decisions; they were just basic do’s and don’ts.
Sherman should certainly have been called for unnecessary roughness; and diving at the kickers knees was a cheap shot. The ref standing over the ball until there were only 4-5 seconds left was a joke, too.
Like I said, basic stuff that should not be missed.

  6. I’ve watched the replay multiple times, there was no whistle blowing the play dead until well after Sherman blocked the kick. So how is that unnecessary roughness? The play was still live, and he clearly blocked it.

  7. Seriously, they suspend a side judge for letting 18 seconds run but not these clowns who made much more of a mockery of the game. Unbelievable. I hope the only post season action this group sees is from a big screen tv at Buffalo Wild Wings.

  8. So let me get this straight…NFL will fine/suspend players for late hits, low bows..even when they wear different colored socks…but when refs messed up not once not twice not three times all this season..absolutely nothing happens to them..those refs literally changed the outcome of the game. Way to go NFL…and you wonder why people aren’t watching you anymore.

  9. So no discipline for not giving the flag, and causing the delay of game?!

Nice NFL. Nice. As somebody that’s played in junior college, I’ve seen some pretty bad refing. Not really helping change my bias for them Blandino.

  10. Instead of any type of fine or punishment they will probably assign his crew to work the Super Bowl.

I only wish I was joking.

  11. Of course not. Wasn’t it good old Walt that couldn’t remember for sure which air pressure gauge he used? He thought it was the other one but…..

  12. GET OVER IT.

Seriously, this site has gotten so whiny. How about celebrating some of the great moments from Sunday/Monday like the resurgence of Raider Nation or the one-handed catches from J.Graham? But nope, let’s focus on negativity and fake outrage over ONE play from the 1st HALF of a game. Yeah, ignore that the game still had another 60-75 plays left to decide the outcome.

  13. These refs are the best in the word. They have a difficult job. Remember when we couldn’t wait to get these guys back on the field when the replacement refs were doing games? If you can’t remember or admit that, you have no business criticizing the refs or anyone else. It’s pretty obvious that a disproportionate number of chronic complainers like to go on websites and whine.

  14. White officials not penalized even though they were incompetent in their officiating, black player gets fined. Trump keeps winning.

  15. Is this true? Won’t they be downgraded and not allowed to officiate playoff games? They may not be disciplined separately but I think that is what will happen.

  16. Yep, this is why the league is losing viewers. It’s bad enough that the refs displayed such incompetence in a prime time game. It’s almost worse to say that there’s no accountability whatsoever for that colossal eff up.

  17. Thumbs up for ppl who think the refs fix games with there ridiculous calls

Thumbs down for those who think games are not fixed

  18. So, a player makes a mistake and gets fined/suspended. Refs completely screw the pooch on a call and get…nothing.

Remind me again why fewer people are watching?

  19. ……the NFL has made Blandino a TV icon….I can’t stand the instant justification of every penality or rule that was botched. It’s really ruining the game. Remember when you could just watch a game and MAYBE 5 penalities were called for the WHOLE game? (Unless you were watching the St. Louis Cardinals and watching Conrad Dobler get multiply flags…..ahhhh..the good ol’ days)…..

  20. That 3 points before the half would have made a big difference since the Bills were down by 6 and in field goal range at the end of the game… so instead of having to go for a td, they would have been able to kick the fg since the score would of been seahawks by 3 at that point. So who knows, had they went into OT Buffalo might have walked away 5-4 instead of 4-5… thanks NFL.

  21. That sure makes fans feel good about the quality of the product the NFL is putting out these days.

Just one indication as to what is wrong with the NFL…it starts with Roger Goodell.

  22. In other news, the league announced that it has already been decided that Walt Anderson’s crew will ref the next Super Bowl.

  23. You know, Blandino could have cleared this whole thing up if he tweeted during the 4th quarter that there would be no punishment for the officials. I mean dude threw their butts under the bus in the 3rd so it seems only right he exonerate them in a more timely fashion. Ladies and gentlemen, those who scoffed when told that Goodell had been given the complete authority to do as he pleases by a U.S. Federal Court of Appeals and it didn’t matter if he had proof that anything even happened to levy punishments. I give you this example. Officials totally embarrass themselves and the NFL on national television to the extent we are still discussing it days later and no consequences. Player does not get flagged for an action and get’s fined $9,000. Horseracing, Boxing and soon to be the NFL……. What 3 sports once dominated the American sports landscape Alex

  24. If the overofficious jerks in the NFL office would get off the “we need a special ball for kickers” mentallity, we wouldn’t have these problems. Just another thing the NFL “tweaked” that causes people to wonder what happened to just playing football.

The NFL did the same thing to the Ravens and Tucker. They were hurrying to get the ball placed, didn’t use the kicking ball as instructed, the clock was running down so Tucker had to kick what he referred to as a chocolate bar it was so soft. If there is a kick and the league is adamant about changing the ball, then just stop the clock, place the ball, and then when the correct ball is placed, then restart the clock. This isn’t rocket science and the refs want to infuse themselves into the game at every point, except when it is helpful to the sport.

  26. Did they even attempt to explain why the ref stayed over the football causing that delay of game penalty? Total joke they could mess up that bad and have ZERO happen after the fact.

  27. I would rather the league discipline itself for not giving the refs a heads up that they were screwing things up.

Perhaps they could start by fining the members of the competition committee for constantly ignoring the need for replay to assist overloaded refs.

  28. Complete horse crap. Does the NFL not realize 99% of reasonable people can see that the game was fixed? The NFL loves its new fantasy backed game draft King. Putrid. And they wonder why people are fed up watching this crap? Major fail/fix by supposedly one of the leagues best officials and no punishment ? Complete horse crap.

  29. And this is how we’ve arrived at this point, where ALL the crews suck, countless critical calls/missed calls every week, etc. ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY. There shouldn’t be fines for this crew, there should be pink slips. The average drunk PFT commenter could have called that FG sequence better than these clowns, yet they get a pat on the back and are put back out next week to screw up another game. It boggles the mind to try to comprehend why the NFL lets this go on.

  30. When are pages like this one and journalists going to see the light?

    Games are hard to watch.

Refs are not full time staff, non professional

    Fans losing interest.

This means this page will lose visits and close if the product doesn’t improve.

    Newflash.

Perhaps it is time for the media, not fans to insist on full time refs to improve the level of the NFL product.

    Just a thought…

  31. Even as a Hawk fan, I was surprised there no UC called, Then the refs blow the next play letting Buffalo intentionally ground the ball(if PFT’s interpretation is correct), just finish the trifecta of horrible, they create the delay of game penalty.

Although, as someone stated above, he did block the kick, so should it have been a roughing the kicker call when no whistles had blown until the kick was away?

  32. NFLPA should grow some Gannas and tell the NFL. That’s it. Your refs do not get fined or suspended then neither does our players. Period end of story.

  33. Week #9 NFL Officiating Ineptitude Power Rankings

    5. Jeff Tripplette
    4. Jerome Bogar
    3. Any 2013 Replacement referee
    2. Walt Anderson
    1. Dean Blandino

  34. Of course no discipline because then Walty would have to spill the beans about the league ” advising” him on who they needed to win this game.

  35. Technically Sherman didn’t do anything wrong. Was he off sides? Sure but, there was no whistle from the refs.

We’ve all seen refs blow the whistle when a player is grossly offsides prior to the snap. They mark off the penalty and the game goes on. Not in this case though.

Since there was no whistle, and the ball was snapped, he blocked the kick. There is no ruffing the kicker penalty for blocking a kick. I understand people believe it was dirty, and that’s fine. But, if he doesn’t block the kick, and the FG is good, Buffalo declines the penalty and takes the points.

Then Pete Carroll would be upset, and people on here would be whining about him.

None of this ever happens if the refs blow the whistle like we’ve seen may times before in similar situations.

  36. Terrible crew – same crew that blew the forward pass call AZ @ CAR

Walt Coleman, there’s a bass boat and a lake that’s missing its retiree.

Seems to be the NFL M.O. Just like when the NFL insisted Anderson’s recollection of which gauge he used was wrong because, you know, if he was right the whole framegate thing blows up in the frauds face.
