Chiefs come back for wild 20-17 win over the Panthers

AP

The Panthers let the Chiefs hang around a little too long, and it cost them a chance to save their season.

Thanks to a pair of defensive plays, the Chiefs came back for a 20-17 win on the road, improving to 7-2 on the season.

The Panthers were up comfortably, 17-3 to start the fourth quarter after a 20-play drive which ended in a punt. But unable to put points on the board there was costly, as the Chiefs came back with a Eric Berry pick-six, and followed with a field goal to tie the game.

The Panthers had a chance to win the game themselves, but cornerback Marcus Peters ripped the ball away from Panthers wideout Kelvin Benjamin to set up a game-winning field goal by Cairo Santos.

The Panthers had won two in a row to spark hope of another late-season rally, but now they’re 3-6 and wondering what to make of a season gone so wrong after last year’s 15-1.

  1. This team dont quit !!!
    Marcus Peters for P.O.Y.

  2. This offseason I predicted the Panthers would slump this season, and I was actually happy to see that they were. But now I’m legitimately starting to feel bad for them. The Panthers suck.

  3. Peters is a play maker no doubt. But unfortunately he’s not even a good corner. Ranked 36rd by PFF. He’ll blow a lot of plays, but he’ll make some too. People only see the int stats and assume he’s elite. Only reason he gets so many is bc teams are comfortable throwing his way bc he’s not even good.

  4. I guess it fits for the chiefs to pull out a win when the Broncos get a free win from the refs.

  5. Cam newton is a mediocre qb. And a diva, crybaby, soft. And he calls himself superman? Lmao. A true superman doesn’t whine and cry to the refs about getting hit. He’s supposed to suck it up and play through it and play tougher. Never show your opponent that your scared or your hurt. Be a man and show them how tough you are by continuing to get back up without complaining and keep making good plays and be clutch in the 4th q. Cam is just too soft and it goes all the way back to the Super Bowl. He hasn’t been the same since . Cam is 6’6 260 but he’s soft as a kicker. He’s the softest qb in the NFL.

  6. ^^

Amen. I can’t help but think of Anquan Boldin when I think of “tough.” Cam could learn a thing or two from Anquan.

  7. Hey Cam? Member in the 2nd Quarter when you were Dabbing and smiling and laughing when you were up 17-0? Member? Good stuff.

Over/Under on how SHORT his Presser is after the game.

CHIEFS, FIRST PLACE IN THE AFC WEST!!! Buh Bye Raiders. It was nice while it lasted.

  8. Tainted saints, I didn’t know the refs blocked the xtra point and ran it back for the win. Lmao , your team choked, deal with it like a man.

  9. Chiefs are the luckiest team in the NFL. The horse shoes will fall out of their arses and their luck will run out when they meet the Patriots in Foxboro again. Can’t wait for them to go down. Go Raiders, go Broncos, Go Pats!!!!

  10. Cam is a big baby! Not a champion in any sense of the word. Panthers are tanking fast. They go op 17-0 and lose? Dab all you want, boy! Ain’t gonna get you anywhere!

  11. If Alex had played as good as Cam did, the Chiefs would have easily scored 40 something. Instead, the Chiefs offense scored 1o measly points. The level of play the Chiefs offense displayed today won’t cut it in January. Not even close.

  12. Alice missed one wide open receiver after another with passes over 10 yards.

    He stinks.

If he Chiefs make the playoffs, they will go nowhere in the with Alice at QB.

  13. An incredible win on the road, with practically no QB play worth speaking of. QB play almost as bad as the raiders defense. Almost.

1st place for now. A QB change would help the poor defense, and WR’s. Still good enough to stomp out 2nd place oakland again.

What? It’s over already? Oh well. Congrats on clinching so early. Good luck in the playoffs.

Chiefs fans like to set attainable goals. They know they won’t do diddly in the playoffs, but they like their chances against the Raiders.

First QB with 20000 passing yards and 3000 rushing yards in his first 6 seasons. Keep talking trash, but the numbers don’t lie.

Tough loss today, but if it keeps Denver out of the playoffs, well worth it.

  17. Your 1st place Kansas City Chiefs! Love how the raiders lose even in their bye week. It’s engrained in their system and they come by it so naturally.

Awesome to get the ugly wins even though they’re down so many starters.

Remind me again because I forget…who did the Raiders beat in the playoffs last year? Or the year before? Or the decade leading up to that?

The word you’re looking for is ingrained. Being a half-game back after nine weeks is better than I expected, especially considering I thought the chiefs were the best team in the division going into the the season. The Raiders are getting better, and meanwhile Alex Smith is eating $17.8 million in cap space this year for that 4.68 YPA he tossed today. Good luck with that going forward.

The Chiefs have won one playoff game since Montana retired, and haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl since 1970. Do you remember now? It was Chiefs fans that took a road win against the Panthers and turned it into their regular Raider obsession. They can’t stop talking about how bad Oakland is, and can’t stop bragging about beating them. Bunch of dopes.

  21. Okay. Fair point. The Raiders are really good. I mean really good. But not first in the division good. That’s because the 1st place Chiefs went to Oakland and put on a clinic.

Yeah. It’s shameful that Oakland can’t beat Alex Smith. He owns the Raiders. And there’s no good reason for it.

  23. Terrible coaching decision by Rivera not to just kneel down after the final kickoff and take the game to overtime. You are at your own twenty, about 25 seconds left and no timeouts. The only thing you can accomplish in that spot is something bad. Without having a dog in this fight, Chiefs may be the worst 7-2 team out there. Offense is atrocious. If Cam Newton doesn’t gift them a touchdown with a stupid, off balance, toss it up throw, that gave the Chiefs life when they had shown nothing until that point, the Panthers would have coasted to an easy victory. Didn’t see his post game press conference, but I hope he had the good sense to say the loss was on him.

  24. Smith played very poorly today, no doubt , but it was Newton’s horrible decision on the Berry pick that changed the momentum of the game and led to the Chief’s win. Smith missed on several key plays today, but he never makes a throw like that one that ultimately ends up beating his own team. Chief’s fans thank Cam and Benjamin for the early Christmas gifts.
