Ex-Browns coach Butch Davis lands another college job

Former Browns head coach Butch Davis will be introduced Tuesday as the new head coach at Florida International University, per multiple reports.

Pete Garcia, the athletic director at FIU, was the head of the personnel department for the Browns when Davis coached the Browns from 2001-04. The two had previously worked together at the University of Miami; Garcia has been at FIU since 2006.

Davis has been working in TV since being fired by the University of North Carolina in 2011. He was 24-35 in four years as Browns coach but remains the only coach to take the “new” Browns to the playoffs. That 2002 team went 9-7 and blew a big lead to the Steelers in the Wildcard round.

Davis resigned — it was officially called that, anyway — 11 games into the 2004 season. His previous NFL experience had come with the Cowboys from 1989-94, where he started as defensive line coach and also served two years as defensive coordinator.

Davis had current head coaches Bruce Arians (Arizona), Chuck Pagano (Indianapolis) and Todd Bowles (Jets) on his staff in Cleveland. Titans Offensive Coordinator Terry Robiskie and Ravens special teams coach Jerry Rosburg, who’s considered by some to the best in the business, were also on the staff.

    Yeah… and… so is… kimbo slice.

  2. Sometimes, it really is the Players that make the coach. Look at the talent that came through the U while he was there. You could assemble an All-Pro NFL roster with those rosters. Now, what he does have is an eye for talent. That’s where he, Saban and Spurrier failed, you don’t always get a chance to field the best week in and week out.

  3. rabidbillsfan,

The talent that came through the U while Butch was there has a little something to do with the coaching staff and their ability to recruit. Speaking of the U how has the program done the past few years?

  4. Make a nice living on the beach…not real high pressure competing against Rice, Marshall and Middle TN. A good retirement plan for Butch!
