Rams bench Case Keenum for Jared Goff

The first overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft is finally about to get on the field.

The Rams will start Jared Goff on Sunday against the Dolphins, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.

That reverses what coach Jeff Fisher said two days ago, when he insisted that Case Keenum would remain the team’s starting quarterback. Apparently Fisher has decided something has to change with his team’s terrible offense.

In their first year in Los Angeles, the Rams have struggled on offense all season, with Keenum simply not able to produce big plays. The fact that Goff has stayed on the bench despite Keenum’s poor play has led many to believe that he must look so bad in practice that Fisher can’t justify putting him on the field. But now we’ll all get to see how he looks on Sunday.

  1. The guy who writes the checks and signs the coaches’ contracts made this call. And it really puts Goff in a bad position, given that his head coach has said repeatedly, each and every time he’s been asked, that Goff is not ready.

I hope this backfires on Fisher. If Goff plays great, maybe Fisher will be seen as the fraud he is and gets sent on his way.

  2. Jeff fisher the most overrated coach of our time has been forced by upper management to play this kid…who knows he might be the next dak Prescott!

  3. Fisher looks really bad in all this. Sounds like he was going to sit him the whole season and finally got forced into playing him. And the only reason NOT to play him was to buy Fisher a little more time with the carrot being how much better they’d be next year when Goff did play. The little tricks you learn that keep you employed for years and years even when you never win.

  4. Of course, how else can Fisher attempt and achieve another 8-8 season which is his ceiling and ownership’s goal each year? What a GREAT coach!

  5. My buddy is a Titans fan. He’s pretty happy about this news. That pick looks like a top 10 lock for sure now.

  6. Not a phinfan but geeez, this is definitely the wrong type of defense to debut the supposed golden boy. LA fans will have a thousand excuses. His first game, he is a rookie, blah blah blah. Will not change the outcome. Kid is going to get flogged like a dirty rug on the floor of the coliseum.

Peyton Manning would not do good in that offense. The entire Ram starting Oline would be back ups or game day inscribed on about 25 other NFL teams. Innate to agree but Suh, Wake and even the listless Marion Williams are going to have sack numbers of Biblical proportions this Sunday.

  7. The Rams are 4-5 WITH Case Keenum having started those games while looking terrible for the most part (Lions game being the exception). Goff literally can’t be worse then what we have seen. If somehow he can be an adequate game manager and get just a few more points on the board then the defense can carry this team like it has all season IMO.

  8. I look at this entirely different. If the O-line has been struggling, the run game has been struggling, why send Goff in to be destroyed? I think the reason the NFL is in such a state with inconsistent QB play for the last 10 years has been the rushing of QB development. That and how many coaches know how to develop a QB?
Either way, the overall play suffers because the game strategy is supposedly “pass-first” throughout the league, yet most QB’s don’t have the skills to do so consistently.
No wonder the games have been so boring lately.

  9. I think Fisher was feeling the heat from management to get his #1 draft pick on the field. They probably told Fisher to either play Goff or they’d find a head coach who would.

  10. according to “family sources” this has been the plan for a few weeks, it’s just that Fisher doesn’t give a rip about what all the armchair GM’s here think and continued the Keenum line.

  11. We are about to find out why this has taken so long. Dude flat can’t play. Fans will be begging for Keenum by halftime.

  12. Fishers goal….to be coach when the complex opens. Im guessing he has a small staff of independent strategists he sits down with atleast weekly to go over his best moves to achieve this outcome. As a Seahawk fan…..I’m very happy with this arraignment…..I’m just a little nervous Jim Harbaugh decides to come in and kick the stache out of his rent controlled situation.

  13. “Fisher looks really bad in all this.”

Fisher has looked “really bad” for years now and yet still gets paid millions every year to coach.

Unfortunately the pool of qualified nfl coaches is pretty small. There are clearly not enough competent head coaches to go around and mediocrity is better than a lot of the other options out there.

  14. Fisher has to admit that he took the wrong player at number one, which is fire able offense, or admit that it’s his expertise that keenum is better, which is again a fire able offense.

  15. One would think…

    • Fisher is really pretty mediocre. Hard to argue otherwise;

    • Trading all those picks and apparently being SO WRONG
does not help. You trade all those picks for a guy who can’t
beat out Case Keenum…(gave up a six total picks, including
their first and third-round picks in 2017).

    • Plan B? C?

    • Lets call a spade a spade: in large part, the Competition
Committee has failed, if not ruined the sport.
    Dez: that was a catch.
And if it isn’t a catch, the rules are wrong. Jeff Fisher was a
fixture on the committee; remaining members of the
committee include: Giants owner John Mara, Cowboys
executive vice president Stephen Jones, Packers president
Mark Murphy, Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome,
Texans G.M. Rick Smith, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis
and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

  16. Thank God. Although the Rams offense is so putrid Goff won’t change things enough.

As far as the “wrong week”, all NFL defenses are tough for a rookie. He’s got to get his cherry popped sometime.

  17. Keenum did a sufficient job. He simply has no time to throw. Golden boy , with it being his first game , will have less. Put it this way. They have a very good RB in Gurley to take the pressure off the QB. Problem is they have an Oline that, forgive my language , SUCKS. Beyond that the Oline is horid no matter what scale you use.

Jeff Fisher is an ego motivated I know everything coach. Always has been that way. Always has a decent defense but keeps them on the field for 40 min a game. Plain truth is him and Snead picked the wrong QB. Watch. Goff may not even make it thru the whole game

Miami pass rush is going to kill this kid and Fisher will be dreaming of even making 7-9. At the end of the season he will of course set blame on the team did not make enough good plays. It’s time Jeff Fisher hits the unemployment ranks and also grease head Snead

  18. Ahhhh Fisher is no fool.. He rode Keenum to get the most production all year claiming he was the better Qb. Now that he has been Keenum, he can now use the “oh we were just trying to see where we were with Goff” line to fall on just in case their record flops back to 7-9

  19. This is probably a clever move by Fisher only because they play my Dolphins who are on a 4 game winning streak and I just can not see us get to 5, only because we’re the Dolphins. Now he might still have a rough afternoon because we do get plenty of hits on the QB but we also give teams plenty of opportunities and penalty yards. And baring any last minute heroics or bad QB decisions I can not see us returning from Cal 2 & 0.

  20. For those who are worried about how Goff looked in the pre-season, Dak Prescott looked so bad in the pre-season, the Cowboys were starting to second guess themselves. Goff is going to be fine.

  21. Meh.

I’m in St Louis. To think I had season tickets to this mess. I feel for the good people of LA. It’s your turn to put up with the lambs.

We had many years of the under-achieving Rams, their crappy coach and terrible owner.

  22. As a Dolphins fan, this has me a bit worried. I know the popular sentiment is that the Dolphins D line is going to eat him alive, which is most likely, but there is the factor of the unknown with this kid. The Dolphins don’t have any real game tape on him. Plus, as much as the Suh and company may be “licking their chops”, Donald and company are pretty dang good too.

I expect the Dolphins to win, but this is the definition of a “trap game”.

    Dolphins 24-13

  23. As a Seahawks fan I don’t care what it takes, I just want Fisher to keep his job.

Why? So the Rams can keep embarrassing your team year after year…. what is it now, a 4-5 record vs the Rams since Wilson was drafted, including losing 3 in a row. Good call there.

They may have the Seahawks number, just like the Seahawks have the Patriots number in Foxboro, but we both know that means squat. They haven’t been an NFCW threat since Wilson was drafted. THAT is the reason.

  25. tonebones………………. So wrong. Prescott looked great in preseason. In fact , he looked so good that people were wondering if he was that good or just preseason. Goff did not look good in preseason. He looked overwhelmed. That’s all over now. Ram fans , you get your wish. He is playing. Lets see if he can play. My guess is the Miami and every other DC on the Rams schedule is coming up with blitz packages that he has never seen before and cant wait to get the game started. TG will have 50 carries a game. How many more wins left for the Rams ? 1……49ers . That’s it. 5-11

  26. For all the Fin’s fans claiming Goff is going to get destroyed by Miami’s D-line, I would pump the brakes a bit. One thing that everyone agrees on is Goff has way better footwork in the pocket than Keenum so he can probably avoid most of the pass rush pressure. And you might want to worry about your QB getting destroyed. Ever seen the Rams D-line?

  27. I have selfish motives. Somehow I ended up with 2 Rams on my fantasy team (Gurley & Austin – and surprise, surprise, I’m 3-7), so I need Goff to do very, very well.

  28. Fisher getting overruled on personnel decisions is not a good thing for his long-term future as coach of the Rams.

If Goff has any measure of success, he is done. If Goff stinks it up (and given the Rams lack of offensive strategy, he may very well be awful), Fisher can go back to ownership, and say “see? I was right…he wasn’t ready.

If nothing else, at least the Rams are more interesting to watch in LA than they were in St. Louis.

I almost fell out my chair after reading this. The talk about how well Prescott played in the preseason was exactly that. It was the preseason. Apparently you didn’t watch it.

PS: Not a Cowboys fan at all.

  30. They may have the Seahawks number, just like the Seahawks have the Patriots number in Foxboro, but we both know that means squat. They haven’t been an NFCW threat since Wilson was drafted. THAT is the reason.

They were not a NFCW threat even before Wilson was drafted!!!!! Seriously bro, come on!!! Don’t act like Wilson was the reason the Seahawks have had their little run. Every smart fan knows it’s all the defense. Wilson would be trash if it wasn’t for that defense, and playing in a bad division, and having the refs in their pockets. He has a losing record when the defense gives up 20+ points, that’s not a fluke.

  31. ah look they finally caved to the media’s clamoring. Now they can write about how much he sucks for the rest of the season, then they can speculate about the rams next big draft bust.

  32. @minson15 LOL that’s not even remotely an indication of how one will do in the NFL. People who thrive in the preseason have failed miserably in the NFL; people who have struggled in the preseason have gone on to have long, successful careers. You literally don’t know how Goff will or won’t do in the NFL until you see actual live, regular season footage.

  33. For those who are worried about how Goff looked in the pre-season, Dak Prescott looked so bad in the pre-season, the Cowboys were starting to second guess themselves. Goff is going to be fine.

What preseason where you watching? Because the one I watched on TV and in person, Dak was lighting it up.

You’re the one that brought Wilson into this in the 1st place. I want Fisher to remain the HC of the Rams for what (should have been) obvious reasons. Nice attempt at classic diversion, bro.

  35. The armchair QBs and Favre fanboys also claimed that Aaron Rodgers sucked in the preseason when he was first drafted so he clearly must be another “Tedford system QB” bust.

  36. They haven’t been an NFCW threat since Wilson was drafted. THAT is the reason.

You’re way too forgiving…they haven’t been an NFCW threat since Holmgren put Martz in the hospital.

  37. Not 7-9 . That would be par for Fisher. I want 4-12. 5-11. I want the fans in LA to know what an absolute losing franchise this is from top to bottom. They really think fans are stupid. They think they can throw anything on the field and people will flock to the stadium to watch it and when you don’t go to the games , you will be labeled as bad fans. Its a one way street for them. They think its the NFL you have to come. I hope the fans in LA give them a wakeup call and a reality check. Want to know why the attendance was down in STL ? Besides the lies and the two face way the NFL and the owner treated us , the product on the field was awful year after year. Always the same excuses. A player here , a play there and we would be good. We will fix it. Im sure the LA fans have heard that before from Fisher.

Yeah, I should have made it crystal clear for the comment cherry-pickers. What I wrote was in response to this quote:

“Why? So the Rams can keep embarrassing your team year after year…. what is it now, a 4-5 record vs the Rams since Wilson was drafted, including losing 3 in a row. Good call there.”

Since this quote only went back to when Wilson was drafted, I was referencing that point in time.
So, just to make it comprehesible to all. I don’t care if the Seahawks never win another game against the Rams so long as specific criteria are met.

    1) The Rams are non-competitive in the NFCW.
    2) The Seahawks make the playoffs.

I don’t care about the head to head matchup other than it’s affect on #1 and #2 above.
The Rams can meet only one of these on their own. The best way to do so is to keep Jeff Fisher as HC.
    Hope this clears things up.
