Gronk praises Earl Thomas for “real football hit”

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was on the receiving end of a brutal shot to the chest from Seahawks safety Earl Thomas on Sunday. Both men got up and kept playing, and both men gained respect for each other afterward.

Amid reports that Gronkowski suffered a punctured lung on the play (reports that have since been disputed), Thomas wrote on Twitter that he admires the toughness of Gronkowski for taking that shot.

“Nothing but respect for Gronk. One of the best I’ve lined up against. Hoping to see him back on the field sooner than later,” Thomas wrote.

Gronkowski saw that tweet and said he also admires Thomas as a great competitor.

“The respect is mutual man, you got the best of me on that one. The grind is real, you showed the fans a real football hit,” Gronk wrote.

On the field and off, Thomas and Gronkowski showed fans the best of the NFL.

  1. JFCP, lets keep talking about one hit from one game. How many more stories will we see about this before this weekend?

  2. Two outstanding players acknowledging a great play. Gronk will probably miss a game because of it, but it’s against the 49ers, so go rest up without a worry and come back as strong as before.

  3. He took a hard hit and lived to tell about it? No way. That’s instant death. The next thing you’ll be telling me is that there is a cure for a broken leg. Scoff!

    Mr. Ed

  4. It wasn’t a good hit, it was an epic hit. It was a real clean solid hit. That’s what it’s supposed to look like. Think about about all the sad little DBs who go low on Gronk because they are scared to go high. So they shoot for his knees to take him down. Well Thomas went right where you are taught, in the huge area between the head and the waist and he delivered a solid blow that not only took Gronk down but also made him take a few plays off, as well as intimidates him.

  5. That hit just goes to show what a dbag TJ Ward is when he went low to take out the knee to intentionally hurt Gronk. Much respect for Earl Thomas for playing the game the right way.

  6. Gronk is a Sissy….

Remember him flailing on the ground after a bruised knee last year?… I remember it clear as day thinking my 2nd round fantasy football pick was done for the year… The way he was crying and had to get carted off the field…for a bruised knee…not broken.. Bruised!!! Let that sink in…

  7. Great game from two great teams. Shows how compelling the game is when both teams coached up and players execute.

Are you watching Goodell? You and the other 30 would rather tarnish and knock both these organizations down. Notice how rating have been going down since SB XLIX, not a coincidence at all.

    Rematch Feb 5th in Houston.

  8. I dont like the Pats, they have the two largest cheating scandals in the history of the NFL and dont deserve to retain all their titles, but its nice to see a player act like a man. Gronk 100% committed offensive pass interference on that last play though, he went right up to him and extended his arms. But at least for this hit he congratulated him for making a good play, we need more of that.

  9. Brady led him into that. Patriots just don’t have their heads into the game after finding out their coach is a weirdo.

  10. .
Patriots fans to Earl Thomas, ” thanks for laying out our best player for a few plays, instead of the season.” It goes to your character and also Pete Carroll’s.
    .

  11. That hit was on a level with the one Kam Chancellor put on Vernon Davis years ago. Here’s hoping Gronk’s career doesn’t go downhill like VD’s did after that.

  12. I was impressed more by Thomas’s precision than anything else. Crazy hard to hit someone at that speed and do so that cleanly. Funny how two “cheating” teams play so cleanly on the field while Goodell’s favorites are usually the cheap shot artists.

  13. This was a perfect example of the fact that you don’t need to launch or aim for a guy’s head to deliver a devastating blow. Great hit by Thomas, exactly what the NFL is trying to do. Football won’t be “ruined” or “soft” if guys play like this.

  14. The odds of Thomas landing another goodell-clean hit like that is the same as a sniper hitting a penny from a mile away while riding in a tank. That’s how hard it is to hit that limited defined area when both players are running 90 mph. I don’t blame other players for going low. Otherwise, you better hit that penny or the flag is coming.

  15. Truly great news.
My favorite part of the game was Brady seeking out Sherman after it was over. They just smiled at each other and shook hands. Tom said we will be playing each other again by seasons end.
    True sportsmanship

  16. target area: don’t remember any target area when I was playing football as a kid…then again, I never heard the term transgender either…different times…that’s why you’ll never see a QB in todays game taking a snap from center like Unitas against the Bears in 1960, his white uniform front covered in blood as he marched down the field to score the winning touchdown in a game neither team ever recovered from that season…football was better then, games took about 2 1/2 hrs, wide receivers didn’t look for a flag after an incomplete pass, and QB’s took all kinds of hits if they wanted to pass…

I wish Gronkowski played for my favorite team. :/

Seriously though, who would down-vote this comment?!!

Gronk might just be the best TE to ever play the game (and he’s clean off the field too).

  18. By the way, props to Gronk for not soccer flopping, grabbing his head and getting a flag. This factor goes into my penny analysis.

  19. I like this mutual respect from two perennial All Pros on opposite sides of the field. Gronk showed his toughness getting back in that game after a few plays.

It was Earl’s rookie year versus Brett Farve in the Vikings that he hit Percy Harvin over the middle even harder. The one on Gronk impresses me because of the size difference.

Profootbalfocus – has Earl ranked as the 10th best safety yet teams don’t even try certain throws because Earl is in the middle of the field. Those guys have no clue what they are talking about.

Yeah, it’s one hit, but it was rare, so it deserves attention.

Rare because it was a hard clean hit.

Rare because it wasn’t wrongfully penalized.

Rare because Gronk didn’t whine about the hit.

Rare because Thomas clearly didn’t have intent to injure.

Rare because Gronk came back in anyway and made an incredible over the shoulder catch despite the fact that he will probably be held out this week.

Rare because two teams and their players can have mutual respect.

So it was one hit, but just like Romo’s speech, its an example of why we all want to watch this game.

  21. What a great game all around. You could see this respect on the field during the game too. No showing up guys, no gaudy celebrations on big plays, just emotion and respect.

Was one of those games that makes you wonder what the other 30 teams are even doing out there, because these two teams were playing solid, smart football cleanly and the difference between them and the rest is all too obvious. Too many variables to say they will meet again but I think it is easy enough to say they both deserve to be there if they make it.

  22. For patriots fans STILL complaining about Goodell. Goodell spent the night before the AFCCG against the colts at Krafts personal home. The week before the pats played the ravens, the night before that game Goodell was at Krafts PERSONAL home. Two of the biggest games of the year, and goodell is chilling at krafts personal home- if there is bias…..its in favor of the Patriots. When Goodell messed up the Ray Rice thing (which we all can agree he did), the ONLY owner to stand up and say Goodell handled it as good as anyone possible could have was, guess who……Kraft. These two have been best buddies for 2 decades and have had eachothers backs- if Goodell punishes kraft and the pats, its because Goodell has ZERO options and the evidence is overwhelming enough that goodell cant sweep it under the rug. Goodell burrned evidence in spygate to help the patriots and give them a slap on the wrist, and with deflategate they got away without losing wins or that SB trophy that should have been strippped away. Kraft is 1 of 3 owners who gave Goodell his monster salary (why would goodell sabotage someone who picks his salary?- again it makes NO SENSE). Please stop complaining. Goodell isnt hanging at my owners home and buddy buddy with him, thats for sure. That patriots were caught cheating red handed, take the tin foil off your heads, goodell isnt ‘out to get’ his best friend. They were simply just caught cheating.

  23. Perfect hit. My favorite part is Thomas actually changed directions after the hit. But let’s be real, if that had been a smaller receiver it wold have been flagged defenseless receiver. Watch the video, Gronk turns and after one step he was hit.

  25. Gronko no go! Gronko stay with Earl Thomas..
Earl Thomas first man ever whip Gronko. Gronko impressed! Have deep feelings for Earl Thomas!

You win the interwebs today! Most EXCELLENT Blazing Saddles reference, my friend!

  27. I wish we saw more of this instead of the trash talking BS and helmet slapping that happens almost every other time something like this happens.

I hate the Pats but Gronk is a throwback tough guy like Mike Ditka and Mark Bavarro.

What does that have to do the Thomas hit on Gronk?

    Let it go already.

  29. This is one of the reasons why Gronk is the greatest TE in NFL history. He is a big man who loves to compete. Gronk is not just about the money and he never whines.
Great lesson for all other NFL players and young footballers across the country. Gronk is a big enough man to acknowledge the hit from Thomas. He may miss the next game but this display of sportsmanship just reinforces the legend.
    Gronk is the best!

Dude? have you ever had a bruised bone? That hurts almost more than breaking it. The only thing that hurts more is apparently your ego, which would appear to be hurting more than Gronk’s ribs.

  31. It still kills me that the Broncos could’ve had this guy. I hate you McDaniels.

  32. My favorite team is the Seahawks. And although I have had animosity towards the Patriots and their fans in the past. It has changed.
Why? Because of that hit, the entire game, the coaches, the players and the fans.
I am so impressed with the professionalism of both teams and the acknowledgment of both teams and their fans of what a great football play and great game this most certainly was.
    No excuses, just great football.
My hat is off to the entire Patriots nation.

    Brilliant!

  34. As a Seahawks fan I too am supposed to hate the New England Patriots but after watching the amount of respect and admiration between the two clubs( before the game and after a very tough game) I can’t help but just really like them as a group

Not only Tom Brady and Richard Sherman shaking hands afterwards smiling but Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll hugging and having words sitting there holding each other basically.

    The respect is real.

We even each have our own Bennett brother that is usually talking all week but neither of those guys have said one word about it I guess there’s just too much love.

Seriously, I think this may be a bit of an exaggeration, one was a camera placement infraction and the other was an unproven witch hunt about air pressure in a ball. The NFL must be very clean (no steroid use for example) if these are two of the largest cheating scandals in NFL history

  36. Two HOFers going at it in prime time. I hate unnecessary roughness, late hits, and cheap shots, but Thomas was about as clean as you can get on that play. They should use that hit as a video for how you’re supposed to do it. Thomas weighs right around 200 lbs. Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum were both around 200 lbs. too, and they were hard hitters, but clean hitters. These are some of the smallest guys on the field.

  37. bostonsteve12 “Refreshing to see mutual respect between opponents”

Its refreshing to me to see mutual respect anywhere these days.

  38. All you have to do is go watch tape throughout Earl Thomas’s career and you will see the same play again and again. He always comes in like a missle. Always. Pete had to dial that down his rookie season because he wasn’t experienced enough yet to know exactly when to do it and when to go for the ball, etc…but Earl has always been super-aggressive.

If you watch it in slow mo you see that Earl takes a huge hit himself just to stop that big body and it’s momentum. It was awesome. His body goes backwards about three yards going down after coming in from the other direction. That’s a shot.

I have a picture of the hit as my desktop right now and the size difference between the two players is almost funny. Gronk is a monster and E.T. is this little guy but wow what a little guy. The way he gets up and marches away is beyond good.

I would like to have a picture of those two standing next to each other.

  39. And, sending a virtual hug out to footballfanatic in hopes of turning his frown upside down!
