Randall Cobb: The more we point fingers, the worse off we’ll be

The Packers’ drop from 3-1 to 4-5 has led to a lot of discussion about what’s wrong with the team both inside and outside of the locker room.

There’s not much the team can do about what people from outside the organization will say, but things from inside can be just as harsh. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has talked about the team’s low energy level and need for players to feel like their jobs are on the line in recent weeks while defensive lineman Mike Daniels has called for his teammates to get angry about how things are unfolding.

Wide receiver Randall Cobb sees things a little differently from those two. Cobb believes that the key for the team right now is to avoid pointing fingers in favor of presenting a more unified front.

“That’s the most important thing,” Cobb said, via PackersNews.com. “There are things outside of our room that try to separate us, that try to pull us away from each other, that try to break the bond that we have that was created throughout the season. But we must stick together. That’s the only thing that we can do that’s going to get us wins. The more we point fingers, the more that people start doubting us, the worse off we’re going to be. So we just have to stick together and not let the outside noise change what we believe.”

Whether they are accusatory or conciliatory, the solutions to the Packers’ problems aren’t going to come from words. They are going to come by doing a better job on the field because, as Cobb says, “winning fixes everything.” If the Packers can’t do that, all the rest will just remain the noise of a team heading in the wrong direction.

  1. Rodgers isn’t the only reason the packers are sinking like a stone, but he is one of the reasons, both on and off the field.

Packers fans are in denial about what most of the rest of us can see pretty clearly, he is no longer an elite QB and hasn’t been for the last couple of years. One of the better ones no question, but not top tier. His diminishing skills combined with his lack of leadership is not the source of the problem but it is clearly making it worse.

  2. The Packers just aren’t very good, this year. I can accept that. Every year different teams do well when expected to do poorly and vice-versa. When you have sub-par talent, the coaches need to be good. Right now they don’t have either.

Packer fans have to adapt to an unfamiliar mindset this year, one which is utilized annually by perennially under-performing teams….such as the Browns or the Vikings. This is uncharted territory for Packer fans, but it seemingly hasn’t deterred those fans from thinking it can be turned around.

Maintain a positive attitude and hope for the best.

  3. Feeling a little deja vu coming on. Hasn’t this been the story about the packers for a couple years now?
Pretty sure there is something inside the locker room or front office dragging this team down, but by all means Packers, keep diverting the conversation to outside influences….that’ll fix the problem.

  4. sounds like he’s trying to convince himself that all will be fine……good luck with that..if they lose to the redskins and the eagles on the road, that’s a 4-7 record. then the wheels will really come off

  5. A lot of discussion about this and that, but all have failed to mention that the Packers just aren’t that good. Rodgers has been average to below for some time, Jordy Nelson is recovering, Cobb is inconsistent and they have no running game. The offense is predicated around free penalty yardage to sustain drives. Their dbacks are young and subject to big plays in coverage and their line is old and slow. Put it all together and you have a 4-5 team. Simple as that.

  6. yeah, because some of those fingers may point at you…you are not an elite receiver…elite receivers don’t average 9.6 yds a catch (see slot receivers like Baldwin, Fitzgerald, Boldin to name a few)…third in targets behind Nelson and Adams…would say you are overpaid for what you are producing…

And they have a highly successful NFL coach. Surely he’ll figure it out.
    ——————————————————

Yea, but he’s no “Coach of the Year” like they have in Minnesota. Maybe he should try calling his team “soft” and see if that helps.

  8. As a Pack fan, I share the collective disappointment. There are multiple issues with the team. Effort has been lacking, coaching has been lacking, game plans have been lacking and the overall game play just hasn’t been there.

GB has been running the same offense for years and it had a good run. Yea, we have been plagued by injuries, but so have many other teams. Maybe not to the extent we have, but that is really no excuse. I find it hard to believe we can’t find available talent, or get the most out of what we have. That failure falls on the coaches.

The biggest disappointment so far has been our defense. The offense has had its struggles, but you can’t expect them to score over 30 every single time. We can’t even begin to establish even a pseudo running game when we get down so much, so quickly. AR has been far from perfect, but he’s doing an admirable job lately considering. Jordy is lacking his explosiveness that sadly, he may never be the same. I am not sure if it is the routes, but we aren’t getting any separation so we aren’t making any big plays. Our WRs are rarely wide open. I still think not having a viable TE is one of the biggest hits on this team.

The whole offense needs to make some changes because it’s predictable. The defense really needs improvement, but it’s pretty difficult to see with the games up coming. MM spouting about past success is irrelevant and a cop out. Some people are really going to have to step up. Remarkably, they are still a game out of the division, but that’s a gift they don’t deserve right now.

I still have faith they can get something done, but time is running out.

Cobb is a possession receiver. That is quite normal for what he does…

  10. In these down times we only need to look northwest and see how vikings fans have handled mediocrity for so many long years.

The good news is that our defense will heal and get back on the field and so will our running backs and offensive line.
Our division may look pretty pathetic right now but it will heal and get better.

  11. I have a very difficult time believing that Rodgers won’t turn this thing around, at least from the offensive side — and that’s despite having the self-proclaimed highly successful head coach calling the plays.

actually, if you look at Packer history, a losing record is the norm. 35 seasons of 500 or worse. Add 10 more over the next decade…

    _______________

Spoken like the fan of a team that has been staring up at the Packers who are the second most successful franchise for the past decade.

  14. The biggest problem that this lifelong Packers fan sees is the horrendous defense they are playing. It is historically bad in franchise history even worse than the defenses in the 1980’s that all Packers fans remember.

A few things need to happen for the Packers to have any shot. The defense needs to get healthy. I am never one to make excuses but when you are missing your top 3 corners, Matthews for a month (the D is different without him), and your starting ILB is out it is going to hurt. And don’t get me started on Capers.

Offensively a lot of people like to point out Rodgers is washed up, getting old, etc. Sure he has struggled but look at the offense and what they are up against.

NO running game whatsoever and they haven’t had a consistent or nonexistent running game for a few years now. If you can’t run the ball the defenses job is really easy.

You take away an all pro WR in Nelson last year and he is still recovering and he just isn’t the same. And Cobb just seems to be banged up as well and just isn’t making plays.

And that brings me to the TE position. Anybody who has watched the Packers consistently will back me up with the fact that the TE position in GB is a disaster. What they do have looks like they are running in wet cement and most of the time are covered or will drop the ball. If you cant open the middle of the field with something out of the TE again the defenses job gets WAY easier.

Actually since their history of playing football began in 1921, you clearly don’t understand what norm means.

  17. It’s been 5 yrs and no less than 8 players after Jennings; all current, past or retired GB players have stated Rodgers and his “My p-e-e is gold, and s-h-y-t don’t stink” attitude is THE problem. GB won’t get anywhere near another SB with him at QB. He’s abusive and all other GB players miserable. Rodgers has some major malfunctions going on that have 0 to do with football going. No matter what roster, coaching or front office changes are made, the problem will NOT change as long as Rodgers is QB for GB. Just imagine the young men who’d take a position like this and would want nothing but to praise and uplift his teammates. But not Rodgers; he’s does nothing but ice out, abuse and/or beat teammates when they’re down..taking 0 responsibility for anything that ever goes wrong. Draft a new QB…GB!
