NFC playoff picture: Packers all but out of it

Getty Images

It’s almost impossible to find a realistic path to the playoffs for the Green Bay Packers.

As we begin this week’s look at the NFC playoff picture, Green Bay is 14th in the conference — ahead of only the Bears and 49ers. With both the Vikings and Lions two games ahead of the Packers in the NFC North, it’s hard to see Green Bay winning the division. And it’s even harder to see Green Bay winning the wild card, given that the Packers are 2.5 games behind the current No. 6 seed, Washington.

So after making the playoffs for seven straight seasons, the Packers are an extreme long shot to make it eight in a row.

Here’s our look at the rest of the playoff picture:

1. Cowboys (9-1): Dallas has a commanding lead for home-field advantage.

2. Seahawks (7-2-1): Seattle sure looks like it’s going to earn a bye week.

3. Lions (6-4): Going for a season sweep of the Vikings on Thanksgiving.

4. Falcons (6-4): After taking a big lead in the NFC South early in the season, they’ve now got the Bucs breathing down their necks.

5. Giants (7-3): Ben McAdoo has his team in playoff position.

6. Washington (6-3-1): Last night’s win over the Packers was a big one.

7. Vikings (6-4): They can take over the NFC North with a win at Detroit on Thursday.

8. Buccaneers (5-5): Only a game back of the Falcons in the division.

9. Eagles (5-5): Philly is a good team, but in a tough division it’s an uphill battle to the playoffs.

10. Cardinals (4-5-1): Catching the Seahawks looks all but impossible.

11. Saints (4-6): They might catch either the Falcons or Bucs, but it’s hard to see them catching both.

12. Panthers (4-6): Last year’s NFC champion is now in last place.

13. Rams (4-6): Jeff Fisher will be lucky to get some 7-9 B.S. this year.

14. Packers (4-6): It’s all but over.

15. Bears (2-8): It’s over.

16. 49ers (1-9): It’s over.

  1. Good. Time to clean house with this overrated coaching staff. Capers should’ve been dismissed after being woefully unprepared for Kaepernick and the read option. McCarthy should’ve been canned after Seattle

  2. They just need to think about staying ahead of the Bears at this point, and maybe getting to .500

  3. The only hope for the Packers is to lose so badly that Mark Murphy has no other choice but to fire Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy and hand the GM job to Eliot Wolf and allow him to start over. Murphy needs to have the right situation to make such a bold move and by all appearances of how far the Packers have fallen, more losses will seal the deal.

  4. Pack is done. No doubt about that, but sadly, I’d still rather be in their position than my Vikes. They are young and will be tough to beat when defense is fully healed. Vikes can barely win a game against an inferior opponent at home and needed several very questionable calls to do it. They also traded away significant picks for a QB who looks like he needs to retire after every hit. Not at all encouraging.

  5. Packers are a hapless, classless, team with terrible fans, from a terrible city, and a terrible stadium. A QB that is so arrogant and full of himself, his own family won’t talk to him. What a mess.

  6. “Last year’s NFC champion is now in last place.”

And tears are constantly running down “Superman’s” face

    Lolz

  7. Yes, everyone in America watching football can see the Packers have a Swiss cheese secondary and can’t stop anyone.

Focus on the good teams that matter this year.

  8. The Packers won’t win another game this season. They checked out during the Colts game. They believe they will lose, so they lose. On the bright side, they will get a good draft pick. On the not so bright side, if Thompson and McCarthy are still there they will waste another draft. The past few drafts have produced nothing but what they have right now – a 12 loss team. The team has been an embarrassment this season. Blame injuries, but a decent coach should be able to get players to play with some sense of urgency. Play hard and lose? Well, that would be nice. Play like the Packers D and lose, and you should expect your job to be n the line.

  9. whatjusthapped says: The only hope for the Packers is to lose so badly that Mark Murphy has no other choice but to fire Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy…

    ///

The Pack was absolutely humiliated by the Washington Redskins 42 – 24 yesterday just a week after the Titans embarrassed them 47-25. Exactly what could you possibly mean by “lose so badly”. A 4-12 season, which is looking more and more likely?

  10. cowboys pats in SB and Boys win 31-24 for their 6th Lombardi. Romo gets traded to Broncos in offseason and we draft and get FA’s to beef up our defense. I predict 3 SB’s in the next 5 years.

    HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!!!!

  11. Thompson and McCarthy, still living off their 2010 Super Bowl, are under contract through 2018.

    Embrace the suck.

With holes throughout the roster, it’s only going to get worse.

  12. Packers’ defense leads the league in crowning “Offensive Players of the Week”

So, they got that going for them.

    Which is nice…I think.

  13. Something has been way off about the Packers for a couple years. Personally, I am beginning to get the sense Rodgers has become over-rated and egocentric. Half of the time he looks like he is phoning it in. Each game down the well of the season, he looks more and more like that. By the end of the season, Cutler will look more enthused to be in uniform. And what is this exit the game when its all but lost? Packers only win together….they don’t lose together? Some leader.

Injuries, spinjuries…..good teams adapt and find a way to win….these guys stopped trying.

  14. 6 years of being SB favorites not only in the NFC but the NFL and MM has lead this team to 1 NFCCG appearance in which he produced maybe the biggest choke in the history of sports. TT’s approach doesn’t work. This isn’t exactly what I’d call highly successful.

    #WindowSlammedShut

  15. Of the 16 teams in the conference, the Packers find themselves ahead of only Chicago (2-8) and San Francisco (1-9). Yes, their situation is that bad.

“Six losses puts your ass against the wall,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “Disappointing. Reality is we are 4-6. We understand clearly what is in front of us.

”This is no time for personnel evaluation or coaching evaluation. This is our football team, the 2016 Green Bay Packers. We are going to rally and stick together.”

we understand whats in front of us??? omg dumbest coach out there

  16. Is there a team over the last several years that’s escaped more scrutiny than the Packers?

McCarthy has never seemed that bright and is often out-coached. Rodgers is a phenomenal QB but often seems to believe that the laws of physics and mechanics (ex throwing off his wrong foot) don’t apply to him. The media acts as if Ted Thompson walks on water and yet his team is constantly flawed with gaping personnel holes and his QB is so good that he often covers up Thompson’s flaws.

The Packers have become a mediocre organization, and anybody who didn’t buy into the media narrative was aware of this prior to this season. And remember, it was Thompson the Genius who tried to trade Rodgers to the Raiders in his third season. If Thompson was such a great personnel man he would have never tried unsuccessfully to deal Rodgers, the very QB who’s been covering up Thompson’s flawed roster and McCarthy’s often dubious coaching.

That’s not even funny ariani. The biggest troll under the bridge is you. Get real.

    ——-

Ha, pretty funny coming from the biggest troll on pft. I’d maybe put cody ahead of ariani, but can never be sure I understand what he is saying..

  20. It looks to me like the coaching is the same as the one that went 15-1 in 2011. What’s changed dramatically is the personnel. What’s changed in the personnel department? Reggie McKenzie now works for Oakland. They seem to be going in the opposite direction as Green Bay. Reggie has broken down that Oakland roster, and is building it back to what Green Bay had when Reggie worked there. I think the Packers need to find a Director of Player Personnel like Reggie McKenzie. They don’t need to fire anybody. They just need to add somebody.

  21. I am disappointed with the Pack, but they could still win the NFC North. Both the Vikings and Lions are shaky. I actually think it would not really make a difference since they would be one and done. It would, however, save MM and TT unfortunately.

  22. Wasn’t is just a couple days ago that Florio was saying he still thought the Packers would win the division? Wasn’t he also saying the Vikings were the worst team in football because they had lost four straight by a total of 32 points?

  23. Keep Arod . Keep Mike D. Everyone else is fair game to get booted. Hard to watch a team give up.

  24. Skins beat a horrible Packers Team last night and everyone is all “Watch out”

Pack has no running game, and was using 3rd string Safeties at Corner….

Zeke is gonna mash em’ on Thursday…

  25. won’t have to put up with stellar, frankbooth and the other GB trolls for the next decade as they hide when they have a losing record….NFC North probably decided on Thanksgiving. Vikings 28, Detroit 15…SKOL!

Sorry, it will be another Pats / Seahawks SB…..and I expect another great game. Too close to call as these are the two best teams in the NFL. To get their I predict the Seahawks will beat the Cowboys like a drum….and Cowboys’ fans will debate whether or not they should have started Romo. No SB’s for the Cowboys.

  28. I distinctly remember stellarperformance telling us the Vikings were “lucky they caught GB early.” First of all, laugh out loud to that.

Second of all, stellarperformance is last seen on Vikings articles calling MN the “luckiest franchise ever.” Laugh. out. loud.

  29. Go ahead Vikings fans. Laugh and crow all you want. But you won’t be laughing when it’s all said and done because your Vikings have no chance of winning a championship, either.
The Cowboys or Seahawks will blow the Vikings off the field come playoff time.
And it’ll be nice to have the Packers picking before the Vikings in the draft next year, for a change. That almost never happens. And just as a reminder:
    Packers: 13 championships
    Vikings: Zero championships.

    Case closed.

  30. Goodell still has time to change the playoff format to add bad teams. The conversation with the owners will go as follows:

“Roger, won’t changing the playoff structure mid season anger the fans and undermine our integrity?”
“Maybe. But we will make more money.”
    “Well, I’m sold.”

  31. After a long period of sustained success, it looks like bad times ahead! It’s a return to the form of the 70’s and 80’s! (Hey a guy can wish can’t he?)

Not sure what you mean. We’re onto Philadelphia, but since you’re a vike fan I understand why you’d think you’d be on to Houston after a win in your fancy new stadium against a crumbling Cardinals teams and in which you needed the worst officiating ever in order to come away with a victory. By the way, how’s your new kicker working out?

  33. Packers are a mess no sugar coating this. To blame rodgers as viking trolls love to do is a joke. The purple trolls would give up an arm and a leg for him.

Blame on man Ted Thompson he loves his rookie free agents and most of that defense doesn’t belong in the nfl. So tired of people blaming capers. No coach can win with that defense period not even the all mighty zimmer. Heck he can’t even win with a top three defense .

What is obnoxious about Packer fans, is this is really all you have to lean on, despite the fact you’ve probably been alive for two of them, maybe 4 if your in your 60’s.

Even if the Vikings were to win this year (not going to happen), you blockheads will still keep runnin your yapper about championships won when there were about 8 teams in the league, and my grandaddy was fighting over in Europe.

  36. Hearing a lot of calls for McCarthy’s head and the usual calls for Caper’s head. packers fans, those two are the least of your problems.

Capers has regularly taken a defensive personnel group with middling talent and made them respectable. McCarthy is by no means an elite coach, but he is a good coach. But your GM handed these two men a roster without an ounce of depth and now injuries have exposed that lack of depth.

Add in the fact that your QB is not as good as he once was and not the kind of guy the team will rally around and you get a lost season. If that staff is fired, it will be difficult to impossible to replace them with a better staff. The problem is your personnel man.

And condolences to Demetri Goodson. Awful injury last night. I hope the young man will be okay and will manage to play football again.

  37. Definitely not comfortable, but it was good to see the Vikings win again. Hopefully the momentum can keep going there.

Definitely gonna be a good game this thursday. For some reason i have zero animosity towards the Lions, probably because they’re just as unlucky as the Vikings.

  38. Ok So I’ll eat crow. Before the season, with Eddy Lacy, will everyone healthy, I had them 8-8 and missing the playoffs. Wow was I wrong on that or what.

My one and only reasoning is in the Pre Season it was same old same old, no visable pass defense. Ted T’s draft and development wasn’t developing in my mind.

Who is all “watch out”? I haven’t seen any of that, and I am a Skins fan. Looking forward to the Thanksgiving game.

  42. 14. Packers (4-6): It’s all but over.

And yet this will be about where PFT has them tomorrow in their power ratings. After all, they lost to a good Redskins team on the road. Ignore they’ve lost 4 in a row giving up at least 30 in every game.

  43. After hosting last year’s Superbowl in his fiasco of a stadium, Jed York is inviting y’all to bring your marshmallows on by Levi’s for an ‘It’s Over’ weenie roast put on at his dumpster fire by his top wiener, Trent Baalke. Roast with class either in your unprotected seats or at the HOF dumpster at the fifty and each goal line! Welcome to Cleveland West folks!

  44. Eagles will officially put Packers out of their misery Monday night. Eagles the one team that can catch the Redskins for the 6th seed – if they stay unbeaten at home, and Wash. loses to Dallas on Thurs. A Vikings loss to the Lions would also help, since Philly has the head-to-head tie-breaker on Minny. Eagles road game @Cinci now also very winnable.

  45. I admit the Pack are done. Injuries or not, they just aren’t very good. Every team has injuries and that can’t be an excuse. Sadly, I believe it’s time for new leadership if this team is going to improve.

That being said, I know winning is the only thing that matters and the Vikes did that yesterday. Congrats. But they are going to have to find a running game to do anything in the playoffs – 14 yards total rushing will not get it done. I’m not a bitter Pack fan, just stating the facts.

  46. He said those things to get back on Aaron’s good side after Rodgers bashed him. Now he looks like the two-faced hypocrite he is.

  47. While I’d like to think otherwise, as a vikes fan I know full well that they can still choke away their lead over the packers and that Detroit has historically crashed and burned in the ends of many seasons. It aint over till it’s over.

  48. The cowterds have played a 4th place schedule. lets not pretend like they are all world. The cowterds also beat the pack sans clay matthews who last I checked is better than anyone on dallass’ defensive roster. We will see come Thursday but the narrative should be the complete beat down of the pack. Not about their injuries, after all the Skins have as many if not more injuries. The cowterds are bound to have a few more injuries especially along the line with a huge drop off after the starters are down. Should be a good game and I hope for America’s sake that the cowterds lose.

  49. Packer fan 50+ years.

You have ups and downs. This is clearly a big down.

Here’s hoping they clean house both front office and coaching. This has been a LEAST a year coming.

  50. The Skoltrolls will have their day but for all the real issues with the Packers these days – Aaron Rodgers is not one of them. Its a travesty what Ted Thompson has done, loading the team with undrafted rookies and providing no depth through free agency or trades. Rodgers loses week after week to lesser quarterbacks who look, at least for one week a year, as if they have half his talent. We all know if you gave Aaron an average defense… well, we dont have to guess – 2010.

  51. And now back to the Green Bay fan base golden oldy of………

“13 time world champions from 100 years ago when there were 6 teams in the league….”

I remember when some packer poster after losing to Arizona last year said, ” I think we will win the next two super bowls in a row”

    LOL

  52. Cowboys go 2-4 to finish in the second wild card spot. All the hype surrounding Sak and Meke will dissipate, and the cowterds go into the offseason with more uncertainty, a QB controversy in the offseason, and Jerrah figures out how to screw up the roster with horrible acquisitions and draft picks in the offseason once again leaving cowterd fans to scatter like the roaches they are when the lights come on.

  53. If the Packers would have only lost by 14 yesterday… they would have moved up to #4 in the Power rankings. But, because it was by 18 that will knock them down to probably #5.

I was a bit surprised to discover that the Vikings have the sixth-highest regular-season winning percentage in modern NFL history, ahead of teams like the Ravens, Packers, Patriots and Colts. Throw in 13 Hall of Famers and they fare pretty well for a franchise that hasn’t won a Super Bowl. On this scale, that’s enough to edge out Super Bowl winners Denver, Indy, Baltimore, Kansas City and Chicago.

When your team goes from the start of the merger in 1970 to 1993 with only one playoff appearance in a full regulation season like the Packers did, it only makes sense that they would be drafting ahead of the Vikings.

FYI – The Vikings made the playoffs in 13 of those same seasons.

Even if the Vikings were to win this year (not going to happen), you blockheads will still keep runnin your yapper about championships won when there were about 8 teams in the league, and my grandaddy was fighting over in Europe.

Well, with everyone complaining about the quality of football these days and ratings being down, maybe we’d have a great watchable product if there were only eight to twelve teams. The Packers have been able to win now and then in all era’s.
