Vikings waive running back Ronnie Hillman

Ronnie Hillman wasn’t able to add anything to the worst rushing game in the league, so now he’s looking for work again.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Vikings waived the former Broncos running back.

Hillman had just 18 carries for 50 yards in five games with the Vikings, and hasn’t cracked the Jerick McKinnon-Matt Asiata rotation.

The Vikings are last in the league at 70.0 rushing yards per game and 2.7 yards per carry, which is almost impossibly bad, whether they’re missing a former MVP in Adrian Peterson or not.

It’s hard to believe how quickly Hillman has fallen after leading the Broncos in rushing last year, but fumbles and younger alternatives did him in there.

  1. I wonder what they’re planning to do with the roster spot? The rubes have been calling for C.J. Ham to be called up from the practice squad, and at this point I’m inclined to go along with that.

Maybe we’ll be having Ham for Thanksgiving this year.

  2. Guy needs the right offensive system to succeed, and will certainly get a couple more chances in the NFL.

Vikings OL has been (get ready for understatement of the year) rather poor this year, and the team needs running backs that are able to fight through first contact. Hillman had a couple of nice runs, but generally couldn’t brush off that first defender.

  3. If he’d been given a real chance, he could have helped. It’s a classic self fulfilling prophecy. I hope he lands somewhere and embarresses the Queens for not giving him a real shot.

  4. From a Denver guy’s perspective – this guy has WHEELS. But he has to be set up with good blocking. And when he doesn’t get the blocks, he gets frustrated and negatively expressive. Kinda like a “high school basketball kid that doesn’t like his teammates” behavior …

something is going on w/ this guy, why cant he stick w/ a team????

I’m with you the runs he got, it seems like there is some talent there.

  6. Hillman didn’t even fumble that much in Denver, just saying.

I questioned the signing by the Vikings to begin with. Mckinnon does what Hillman does better. It was an ok depth move, but was pretty much expecting what they got from him. I think he can succeed if he gets the right opportunity.

  7. Denver may call again with CJ out indefinitely. Booker, Bibbs snd Thompson are between the tackles runners but they need someone who can get to the edge better. Fumbling is not acceptable though. We’ll see.

  8. The media infatuation and gameday critics are definitely making us aware of the fact of a pour offensive line. I get it. A couple comments already on this thread have pointed it out again for us. I get it.

However I am starting to blame the runners as well. This past weekend there was a cut-back hole about the size of the State of Minnesota that if McKinnon would have seen would still be running at this very second.

The lack of vision by Mckinnon and his famous two step bunny hop in the backfield is also contributing to this historically bad run game and we all know Asiata puts his head down and runs as fast as he can to where the hole is supposed to be. If the hole is there great he gets some yards, if it’s not then he gives our linemen a bruise in their back.

This isn’t a gripe to say the offensive line is great because it is obvious they have some issues, this is just stating that it is not entirely their fault. I would be shocked if our coaching staff doesn’t point out this one play and tell McKinnon at the very least he has to see this moving forward, because we all know Asiata is just putting his head down.

  9. Wish they would’ve kept him and got rid of Asiata. Stats don’t show it, but you can tell by watching him that he has a burst that Asiata does not have. Too bad he didn’t get consistent carries to have a real chance. McKinnon looked a lot better this week so we’ll see where that goes. Give Ham a shot!

Well now that you’re on board I guess they can go ahead with that plan.

  12. I disagree with ditching Asiata. It took me while to figure out that Asiata is one of those players translating a little talent and a lot of effort into success. Those guys are a great example for their teammates and bring more to the team than numbers. Never complains about sitting behind others, answers the bell when called on and pass protects like he cares. All good.

  13. Peterson must be healthy enough to be the 3rd RB in an emergency but not healthy enough to be given the reigns. Otherwise it’s weird on a short week to go into a game with just 2 RBs on roster, especially when McKinnon has been dinged up a couple times already this year.

  14. honestly behind that banged up O-line i thought hillman did better than the other 2 guys when he got a shot.

  15. With our running game, they should just go with 2 TE’s and 3 WR’s anyhow. Why even keep up the pretense until when and if AP returns?

The Barneys should seriously look into drafting a RB in the 1st round of……….Oh wait.

You guys are 4-6 with the only reason you’re not in 4th is because of the Bears.

And this is all you’ve got?

When you give up a first and a fourth to obtain the mediocrity that is Sam Bradford (and pay him $18 million, yay!) to go 9-7….. that’s really all you need. Eh, Leatherface?

  18. Bradford is not mediocre. He is playing well… almost 70% completion % and 7th in NFL in overall rating. Vikings would not win the north with Shaun Hill… they will win it with Bradford. It was worth the trade since they will need him in 2017 and beyond probably.

  19. some packer trolls get real sore after 4 st losses. guess what, it’s only going to get worse this week in Philly………….

    lol

Yeah, I know they’ve already spent their 1st round pick next year on a Quarterback upgrade.
Spieldope may just have to wait and use a mid-round pick on a RB.
You know, like maybe a 4th.

Oooh, did you just see that?
Did you see what I did there???
    skoLOL!!!

Yeah, Bradford’s been instrumental in leading the NFL’s 32nd ranked offense limping into this season’s homestretch.

Not really. The 4th round pick used in the Bradford trade would be in the 2018 draft. I think the Vikings actually have two 4th round picks in 2017 and a running back sounds logical.

  23. Why aren’t the first-place Lions being mentioned by any Viking fans? If the Lions win on Thursday, the Vikings will be in a hole nearly as deep as the one Green Bay finds itself in. Or, have they already won the mid-season SuperBowl……again?
