Bruce Arians not a fan of Robert Nkemdiche’s maturity or work ethic

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians defended quarterback Carson Palmer by saying that there are “guys that haven’t come through for him” this season, which shows that Arians isn’t fond of what he’s seen from everyone on offense.

The same is true on the other side of the ball with rookie defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche standing as one of the players that’s failed to impress the coach. The first-round pick has only played in three games this season, something that Arians attributed to Nkemdiche’s approach to the game.

“Talent [is] not an issue,” Arians said, via ESPN.com. “Maturity is. And it’s just maturing.”

Arians reportedly took issue with the way Nkemdiche was dressed after last Sunday’s loss. Players are supposed to wear a shirt and tie after road losses and Nkemdiche was wearing a t-shirt with his suit and caught some flak from Arians for it.

Arians was asked if the issues with maturity was similar to what tackle D.J. Humphries went through during his rookie season and answered that it wasn’t similar because Humphries worked harder than Nkemdiche is working this season.

Nkemdiche came out of college with the reputation of being a talented player who fell short on the work ethic side of things. That reputation isn’t going away and it will probably need to if he’s going to earn a prominent role on defense in Arizona.

I like Arians but I think that’s just being too much of a stickler. Then again, when losing you focus on the silly things.

Someday, (perhaps after Jeff Fisher’s 5 year extension is signed), someone in the media will accurately portray Ariens for the phoney he is . He publicly blames the players for everything. And, if you look real close, you’ll see he only picks on the powerless. Where’s the criticism of Carson Palmer? Isn’t his performance more of a problem than some rookie lineman?

Look around, most teams don’t start rookies on the Dline. They usually work them into the scheme via a rotation. Ariens, gets a pass from the media for all his transgressions because he’s accessible and quotable. That’s sad.

  3. Ariana’s favorite pastime is throwing his players under the bus. If he’s really concerned about immaturity he ought to take a long look in the mirror.

  4. But Bruce knew about this guys issues and still took him in the 1st round. He really shouldn’t be surprised.

    _______________

Fortunately for him coming out of college he also fell short on the window side of things too.

  6. Maybe Arians could lighten up on the “clothing attire after road losses” patrol and rule, especially since he’s been in the hospital twice with stress induced chest pains twice this year.

And, this fashion police patrol coming from a guy who wears those terrible Eurotrash-style hats, akin to the “puffy shirt”.

  7. Kind of a strange policy. Does Arians actually tell his guys you have to bring a shirt and tie with you, just in case we lose?
I would think a good motivator would check their luggage and say if I find a shirt and tie in anyone’s luggage, they have to walk home.

  8. So a guy who slid down from a top 5 pick to the end of the first round because of character issues can’t play because of…character issues? Outstanding scouting Arizona. There were many draft pundits connecting Nkemdiche to Seattle pre-draft. They said Carroll would be the perfect coach to turn this guy around. When Seattle traded down to take Ifedi and Nkemdiche fell to the Cards, Arizona pounced on this guy like they won the lottery. All they really did was squander a first round draft pick. Seahawks win again.

  9. He’s trying to wake this kid up. If being criticized in the open doesnt get him going then he probably will be a bum until the last year of his contract. Albert Haynesworth part 2. Hopefully he matures because he could dominate next to Calais Campbell.

  10. Bruce Arians reminds me of my high school coach. Coach Behrens was a stickler for everything, and I mean everything, including wearing a white shirt and tie on game day. If the team is successful, the approach is approved by the players. If the team fails, not so much.

  11. Arians should stick to his guns. And players should always show up in a jacket & tie, like anybody going to work making a high salary does.
    Look at Cam Newton, sharp

1st round picks make millions of dollars a tear.
Tell you what, you pay me an extra hundred dollars a week and I’ll wear a shirt and tie to work. For an extra hundred on top of that I’ll wear a suit and dress shoes.

Sorry, but I think most of you criticizing the policy, do not understand it is not about clothing. It is about team approach and discipline. The Military and Successful Teams understand this approach. Personally, I think Arians is wrong to call him out publically as this further divides him. I have Coached for over 22 years and can tell you first hand that you need everyone to buy in and the Shirt and Tie is just one small way of developing team mentality and brotherhood. Argue away and Thumb’s Down me, but I know I am right because I actually have done it as a player and coach for more decades than most of the Madden Xbox’ers and Sofa GM’s here.

  14. Ole Miss had three guys like this. Nkemdiche, David Treadwell, and Leremy Tunsil. All are physical beasts. All have “maturity” issues. I don’t know if that’s just an undisciplined program, or if they just “attract” guys like that. Maybe a little NCAA investigation into how they’ve been able to “attract” guys the last few years.

  15. This was one of the reasons I called Arizona a pumpkin in the preseason. If you live here locally, you’ve heard Arians talking about how this team’s locker room and especially the younger players weren’t stepping up. He’s been saying it all offseason and it got louder as the season neared. You didn’t hear that same optimism and closeness that the team had the last few years coming in, and it’s showed.

  16. I have no sympathy for a team that drafts a guy in the first round with a known history of poor work ethic.

  17. The guy who throws multiple temper tantrums on the sideline every game like a 4 year old spoiled brat who got chocolate ice cream when he wanted strawberry is calling someone else out on their maturity? Ok.
