Darren Sharper sentenced to 20 years in prison

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge sentenced former NFL safety Darren Sharper to 20 years in prison Tuesday after Sharper admitted to drugging and raping women in four states.

This sentence is part of a plea deal negotiated with prosecutors in four states. Sharper, 41, played 14 NFL seasons for the Packers, Vikings and Saints. He was working as an NFL Network analyst when he was first accused of the crimes.

In August, a federal judge in New Orleans sentenced Sharper to 18 years in prison. Sharper has appealed that sentence.

At Tuesday’s hearing, two victims addressed the court. According to the Associated Press, one of them said that “the only good thing about this situation is that this disgusting low-life human will be sent to prison for many years and is likely he will never be able to do to this to another woman again. I hope this scumbag will now feel as worthless as he has made me feel.”

  1. When I was a kid it was an automatic 20 years for EACH conviction. Now, when we have a much better understanding about rape and the true heinousness of it, the sentences are drastically smaller.

    Very, very wrong.

  2. Something to keep in mind when the NFL is sweeping the spousal abuse under the rug – You are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

  3. Not only is it that sentence not enough but it will run concurrently with the previous sentences handed down in in AZ and New Orleans.

  4. this guy’s got everything then lost it! 20 years is a good time to reflect on what you did to all these women. should be 40 years but still a good time to reflect!

  5. Should have gotten 20 years for each count against him! Hope he gets the same treatment in prison, but without the drugging!

  6. What gets me is how completely unnecessary it should have been. Rich, famous, gift-of-gab. I always thought half the fun was the chase itself?

You are very very wrong. it wasn’t until this century that many new much more severe laws were passed concerning sex crimes and jail time for said sex crimes. People used to get probation for some of these awful crimes.

  8. I remember the “pick magnet” segments of his on nfln. For the next couple of decades, all he has to do is flip the first letter in the title 180 degrees and he’ll have his new title. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy!

  9. I’m confused. He is serving is time concurrently with all counts across all states his convicted in. How is that right? That’s roughly 16 women for 20 years.

  10. Guy had over 60 picks? Long and lucrative career, made a lot of $, yet he had dark secrets….creepy

  11. How messed up is it that Ken Riley has more career int’s than Sharper, never missed a game in his 15 year career and he hasn’t gotten within a mile of being sniffed for the hall of fame? He also never engaged in serial rape either. The sad thing is 80 percent of the readers on this site have never even heard of him. Take 5 minutes and look up his wiki page and you will see Ken Riley’s career is a shining example of why the writers have to be removed from having the power to enshrine players into the hall.

  12. Probably should have been more, but when you consider the original plot by the defense was to package all the offenses up into one 9 year concurrent sentence, the judge did well to call bs on it.

More proof that some people will never understand that in rape, sex is not the objective, it’s the weapon. Rape is about violence and control, taking control away from the victim. It’s got nothing to do with getting your rocks off. If that were the objective, you could go pay a hooker.

  15. I went to the Metrodome in ’93 to watch the Packers play the Vikings. Packers were up 13-12 with less than 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter with no Vikings timeouts left when they marched down the field and kicked the winning field goal with six seconds left. The previous play McMahon hit rookie Eric Guliford for a 45 yard reception. (Guliford’s only catch in his 2 years with the Vikings.) He was left open by at least 20 yards and Sharper was supposed to be covering him. When asked why he had left Guliford so wide open Sharper stated it was because he didn’t think McMahon could throw a pass that far. I’ve hated him ever since. Hope you rot in jail Darren.

  16. Oops. Couldn’t have been Sharper. He didn’t play for the Pack until ’97. Some other idiot DB. Please forgive an old guys memory. Sharper still is hunk of excrement though.
