NFL announces 10-game suspension of Seantrel Henderson

The Bills will finish the season, and begin next season, without tackle Seantrel Henderson.

The NFL has announced that Henderson has been suspended 10 games for his latest violation of the substance-abuse policy. It’s believed that the suspension arises from Henderson’s use of marijuana to treat a severe case of Crohn’s disease.

If Henderson continues to use marijuana to treat his Crohn’s disease, he’s destined to test positive again — and to be suspended again. His next suspension will be a permanent banishment, with the ability to apply for reinstatement after a year.

Henderson reportedly is considering litigation to challenge the NFL’s continued insistence on blocking his ability to use marijuana. The legal theories he would pursue aren’t known; the federal Americans with Disabilities Act would be an impediment because, under federal law, marijuana use remains illegal for all purposes. New York law, however, could give Henderson an avenue for pursuing relief, if he can find a way around the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Because the “no discrimination” provision of the CBA doesn’t specifically articulate discrimination based on a disability, Henderson may be able to sue in state court.

However it’s resolved, Henderson’s situation cries out for a better outcome than what he has gotten. Crohn’s disease can be debilitating; if marijuana is his only viable form of treatment, the NFL should consider pressing pause on its father-knows-best routine.

  1. Crohn’s Disease is no joke. If it helps, they should consider an exception. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

  2. Unfortunately this will get tied up in a court room and not be resolved until long after Henderson is permanently banned because Goodell wont step up and do the right thing. If it’s prescribed by a doctor the no pot policy should be waived, especially for something as serious as Crohn’s.

  3. NFL needs to come out of the dark ages and get on board with the majority of the country’s medical marijuana laws.

Everytime I see a pharmaceutical ad during a game I can’t help but wonder if the NFL’s team doctors get a modest discount on narcotic pain killers from these same pharmaceutical corporations. Just seems slimy.

I was a fan of Roger Goodell but I think the NFL needs a change in leadership moving forward.

    Go Bills!

  4. Let the players smoke pot. The NBA does, and it hasn’t affected the league at all. Plus it’s legal in many states now. But the NFL doesn’t have a “sponsor” agreement with a pot supplier, which is the only reason they won’t let the players use it.

  5. Crohn’s disease…that is one nasty thing to have. If the weed truly does help with this then it should be allowed.

At the same time, I imagine there are other treatments he could be using and he knows the league’s stance on weed so he shouldn’t be using it at this time.

The NFL is such a pathetic league with this weed stance. I could see the day it ends up being legal in the entire country and they’ll still keep it banned.

  6. My dad had Crohns and marijuana was the one thing that gave him some comfort when it really flared up.

The problem here is for every Seantrel Henderson there is a Ricky Williams. What the image conscience NFL worries about is that if it allows one player to use as a pain remedy, you will have another player who uses recreationally and becomes a stoner poster boy.

If, and that’s a big if, players used marijuana responsibly, the NFL could look into legalizing in certain situations. But, dare I say it, players like Aldon Smith and his fire up session are the reason the NFL will never allow it.

  7. Its disgusting that Goodell and his cronies want to deny this player a legitimate treatment.

Keep not watching any game that doesn’t feature your team people. The only way to get rid of Goodell is to keep killing the TV ratings.

I’ve had no trouble finding ways to entertain myself when those other games are, neither will you!

  8. For some people, their disease is too aggressive for ‘legal prescription meds’ to handle. Plus, the drugs suck to take and suppress your immune system. Try getting Crohn’s and report back. I don’t have it, I have a close friend who does.

  9. I don’t wish his situation on anyone, and I don’t think his situation deserves a 10 game suspension. However at the same time rules are rules. League isn’t giving anything up unless they get something back, which spotlights the BS with which they support the players’ health.

Some day the league is going to learn that success requires three things: owners, players and fans. Hopefully it’s not a day too late, though it is what they deserve.

  10. Oh, and yea of course he uses prescription meds, you can’t survive with Crohn’s without them. But you still have flare ups, which I’m sure is where the weed comes in as an adjuvant.

  11. Hard not to empathize with anyone that has Crohn’s disease. My niece has it and uses marijuana as a treatment during summer flare ups. She is a school teacher and by the terms of her employment subject to random testing during the school year. A rule may be stupid but when it is a workplace requirement, you have to govern yourself accordingly. Henderson’s bigger complaint should be with how the confidentiality of the suspension process was violated.

  12. As someone who suffers from a similar condition, marijuana does work for me. In fact, it’s been more effective than the antiinflammatories the doctor perscribes me. It’s no wonder marijuana has been used by almost every culture since the beginning of time.

It’s also been proven that marijuana has more antiinflammatory properties than NSAIDs!

There are legal prescription meds available for Crohn’s disease has he tried them yet?

    ————————-

Yeah, because taking a prescription pill over an all natural remedy SHOULD be our first thought. Hail Big Pharm.

    ==================================

Yeah, all the physically addictive, dangerous opiates that have all kind of wonderful side effects compared to the all natural plant that isn’t physically addictive and you can’t possibly OD or kill yourself using.

Marijuana is an honest to god blessing and because of politics and capitalism interfering with wellness it’s illegal. Madness.

  15. It’s time to vote out the conservative and/or ultra religious politicians who are keeping weed illegal.

  16. I don’t know someone with Crohn’s. I HAVE Crohns, and I can tell your 1sthand that flareups can make you wish you were shot out of your misery. I have found the right mix of prescription meds to keep it under control, but if weed works for him then no lame law of NFL rule should get in his way. Health is more important than moral pursuits.

  17. 1. Marijuana use is illegal at the federal level and in 40 or so states in the US

    2. If the NFL is to consider de-empahasizing testing for marijuana, what are the players willing to give up for it? 18 game season? Return to previous practice schedules? Everything has a price.

    3. Like it or not, as long as it is tested for in the NFL – he has a choice on using it, or playing football. I can’t see how he can win in court on this issue.

  18. The big question is what the NFL policy will look like when (not if) the law changes. If this becomes a state-by-state issue, how will the NFL and the NFLPA agree to handle it?

I’m thinking that like any other job they won’t want people coming to work stoned. When played correctly, football is violent. Mistakes can end careers.

  19. I hate zucchini. If zucchini has medicinal effects on SOME people, but was illegal for any reason, and zucchini could be medicine for some who need it, I say legalize zucchini. Get over your own bias, and let medicine be medicine.
Don’t like it? Fine! Don’t eat zucchini!

  20. Unfortunately the MAJORITY of medicinal cannabis users are purely recreational – LIKE myself & that is a FACT !
In states like California & Denver – BOTH states that I’ve visited recently, I been to a couple of shops for smoke with friends and talked to people with prescriptions getting filled
and they’ll tell you with a wink & a grin “I just asked my MD to give me an marijuana r/x for head-aches or whatever”…
When it becomes written into law here in FLA – I’ll be heading to my MD like a rocket, cause I deal with terminal old age aches & 30+ years of marriage!

  21. He’ll be back for Week Two next year. Five remaining regular season games, the wild card, divisional, AFC Championship, and Super Bowl will eat up 9 games of the suspension.

  22. well since it’s known he has Crohns disease, there should be an exception to the policy.

it’s not like he just smokes it to smoke it as recreational.

C’mon Goodell, you’re killing the sport!

    ********

First, as a resident of COLORADO, I should mention that Denver isn’t a state.

Second, just because some people lie about their medical condition to get an MMJ card, it doesn’t mean all people do.

Like you, I started using MJ recreationally. When I ended up in the hospital for UC/Crohn’s, I told my GI doctor that the only time I don’t feel like I was stabbed in the gut was when I used MJ. The doctor looked at me and said, “That’s the power of marijuana” and then proceeded to tell me MJ has natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Like you, I was a skeptic of the medicinal power of MJ. That is, until it eliminated ALL of my symptoms.Of course, this was 2007…

  24. If they make an exception for this I’m sure half the NFL will suddenly have Crohn’s disease. I have a friend who has Crohn’s and he manages it fine without marijuana. They do have other treatments for it but since they don’t lead to getting stoned he probably hasn’t explored those options.

  25. WTH? It isn’t like MJ is a performance enhancing substance, it works for him, less dangerous than the legal opiates that the league lets through. Get over the paranoia and give the guy a break.

  26. The idea of Charles Manson obtaining a free , right back after this short commercial break , chuckle card . That this satirical “Free” card is freighted on the ‘Traditional’ reasoning that ‘rules is rules’ giving genuine NFL shade , or as it is now known , a legitimacy that can bear no scrutiny .
Seeing as the business called “The NFL” chooses to carry rather than answer/refute what amounts to a rising average eyebrow that aside from the pure cynicism of cozying to the corporate philosophy over the actual problems we should/will be dealing with , sooner rather than soonest , has an immediate , serious , and immutable consequence for the rank and file .
Seantrel Henderson who actually works for a living being offered one of those non choices , close your eyes , click your heels , and Voila ! Admit that physics doesn’t have any real life application , Accept our corporate view that our ineffective , addictive , and expensive process is the only available relief known to man , because BLAH BLAH BLAH .
    Oh yeah !
The idea of legislating medicine just makes more and more sense …
Two phrases “Seemed like a good idea at the time .” & “What ? Me Worry ! “

  27. Well the players need to decide what they will give up in exchange for the NFL to ignore marijuana. Its pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that is how this works.

  28. From other articles I’ve read about Henderson, his Dr. has said that there’s certain medicines he’s allergic to and that’s why he prescribed the Medical Marijuana…And that it has helped him a great deal.

    Why all the fuss:

To me, the NFL knew this because of what happened before and were just laying in wait for Henderson’s tests to come back.
