Steelers tell Antonio Brown to knock it off with celebration penalties

Antonio Brown may be one of the most fun players in the NFL, both for his immense talent and the joy with which he celebrates his accomplishments.

But the Steelers have made it clear to their star wide receiver they don’t find the penalties for his dances funny anymore.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said during his appearance on 93.7 The Fan that the team has discussed this with Brown, after last week’s flag for a choreographed celebration against the Colts.

“He knows, we all know, coach Tomlin brought it up yesterday, that is a huge penalty and we can’t do that,” Roethlisberger said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. “We put our kick coverage team in a bad situation and we can’t have that, and AB knows that.”

Brown has twice previously been penalized for his dances this season, which the buttoned-up NFL has deemed sexually suggestive. (Thank goodness they would never objectify women or advertise erectile dysfunction drugs during games.)

By the way, Brown leads the NFL with 10 touchdown receptions.

Tomlin was asked this week if he needed to address the issue again, but he said his staff has “discussed it wholly” with players already.

“We had a setback in that area, but I don’t think it requires additional discussion,” Tomlin said.

But apparently it did, and the quarterback was the one to send the message.

  1. Odell Beckham’s Thriller dance and Lebron James’ chalk toss (2x) didn’t get flagged, which surprised the heck outta me.

NFL needs to chill with people having fun. Focus on your declining ratings and less commercials, and fining bad officiating.

  2. It’s the NFL’s fault. Not Tomlin or Brown or the Steelers.

It’s a dumb rule. Get rid of excessive celebration and stop restricting celebrations.

Just have delay of game and that’s it. That’s all that is needed like every other sport.

  3. You don’t like him celebrating, keep him out of the endzone aka give the fans something to watch!

These have not been flag worthy!

  4. The NFL has provided a list of authorized dance moves, in addition, the NFLPA has set up a hotline where players can call in at any time and determine if a celebration or any individual dance move could trigger a penalty from the officials. There is no excuse for players still getting flagged for these dances.

  5. antonia brown’s shoe tribute to steroid abusing, former adult industry company bodyguard kimbo slice was the last straw.

    antonia brown has poor judgment.

If you’re getting penalized and you continue your behavior, it is selfishness of the highest order.

    ——————————-

    THIS X 1000

The excessive celebration rules being right or wrong are irrelevant, it’s the rule and violating it costs your team. Stop costing your team.

If you want to complain or argue about the rule do it in an interview, go to the union, ETC.

Plus I will say this, AB has put on target on his back after doing the twerking a few weeks back that honestly was pretty inappropriate, he’s gonna get a flag every time now.

  7. The Penalty was called on Leveon Bell, not Antonio Brown.

Bell came and danced with him, causing a flag for group celebration. It is real dumb considering giving a high five could also be considered a group celebration.

  8. “It’s the NFL’s fault. Not Tomlin or Brown or the Steelers.”

Actually it is Brown’s fault since he KNOWS there is a rule against it. Are you some libtard millennial snowflake? Seems like it since you don’t think people should be responsible for their own actions.

It is a stupid rule, no question, and I have always enjoyed seeing celebrations but the fact is it is a rule and a player should have the mental capacity to grasp that and quit getting penalties.

But hey, I actually expect people to be held accountable for their own actions rather than continually playing the blame others game so what the heck do I know…

  9. I still don’t get all the hate on the league for the celebration rule… it wasn’t made up in a vacuum, it was getting pretty ridiculous with choreographed dances and props, etc.

Tempting to say a better way to deal with it by making a tighter clock rule after a TD and let the players risk delay of game pushing back the extra point. But given all TDs are reviewed, that wouldn’t work.

  10. It’s a kids game.. Stop taking yourself so seriously NFL. No matter what you say or do, football will always be a kids game.

  11. Did this come from the head coach I mean the HYPE MAN
    Mike T.

All this guy does is point at his players and chest bump them like he is a player

    He’s not a coach he’s a HYPE MAN.
All they need now is a “little person” running around on the sidelines with him!

  12. If the NFL restricted itself to the fines Brown says are “nothing to a boss” then it wouldn’t be an issue. But it doesn’t and taking a penalty that impacts your team is being ‘boss’ in a ridiculously self indulgent way.

  13. Hmmm,

Let’s see, everyone can do pelvic winding “sack dances” or Gronk can do his wind and spike or Kelce, who grooves like a dance instructor doesn’t get fined for his “sexually suggestive” dances, OBJ? Really, he’s done everything, NO Fine!

Yeah, NFL definitely wants to limit “some” players self marketing, but OH Gronk can be the most immature idiot, NO FINES (69 comment, no fine)

  14. To be fair, I’m an Eagles fan and Wentz and Jordan Matthews do some choreographed celebration putting on a tie or something after TDs with no flag.

    Brown is being targeted.

  15. >>garby95 says:

    >>I miss Heath Miller’s celebrations

I’m not familiar with those. How did he celebrate? Pretend to spike and then put the ball down?

  16. Good to know that for a sport where no one seems to know what a catch is, at least we know what a crotch is. Glad these officials have spent so much time on this.

  17. Barry Sanders was a class act whenever he crossed the goal line.

“Pretend like you’ve been there before, and act like you’re going back.”

  18. Hopefully, he stops the BS. BUT, considering how much of a selfish, childish egomaniac he is, I don’t see that happening.

  19. Celebrate the score with your teammates and get the hell off the field. AB and guys like him are ‘look at me, look at what I did, aren’t I great” players that would be happy losing if it meant they could score touchdowns and be adored by the fans.

And while you are at it, GET OFF MY LAWN!

  20. For half of these guys, the celebration is more important than the score. Act like you have been there before and remember, you have 52 team mates on the active roster.

  21. Could be worse, we could have to watch Justin Tucker do a dance for scoring 1 point on a kickoff.

  22. It’s part of why the rules of the game are so complicated. There are already rules that the officials can use to prevent excessive celebration.

Un-sportsman like conduct and delay of game.

If it doesn’t delay the game and it isn’t un-sportsman like then don’t call a penalty.

Is it really a problem if a guy dunks the ball over the upright uses the ball as a prop? No.

If a player goes to the center and disrespects the other teams logo then it’s delay of game and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Let the officials decide what is excessive and let the players have a bit of fun for the fans.

  23. I don’t know what he is celebrating–the Steelers wouldn’t even be in the playoffs if the season ended today.

Way to put your team behind the eight ball when your team isn’t even guaranteed a post-season spot–that undisciplined activity starts from the coach on down.

  24. I have seen worse and more excessive around the league, but no flags. what annoys me more is when Brown and Bell does a mini celebration of every first down they get. Refs need to get more consistent.

Are you really comparing “twerking” to Gronk spring the ball to the ground? Cmon man, that’s weak.

Look, I got nothing wrong with the celebrations I’ve seen all year, the days of Joe Horn pulling out a cell phone TO going to the Dallas star are over, and should be. As the author points out, if I have to explain to my 7 year old what viagra is and subject her to all the beer commercials than they need to get off their high horse on these touchdown celebrations.

  26. The hilarious commenters have emerged from their gopher holes.

That team that wears the orange and black isn’t doing so well this season.

  27. As someone who loves AB, likes end zone celebrations and hates Goodell with a passion, I actually agree with the NFL.

The NFL is trying to keep a family-friendly product, and we all know what the hip thrusting means. Same with players like Marshawn Lynch grabbing his crotch as he jumps into the end zone.

The NFL has to have some rules regarding this. I’m sure if all of the players took a “Kaepernick knee” every time the offense scored, some posters here would have a big problem with that, right?

  28. Guys like Antonio selfishly think they scored the TD all by themselves. They conveniently forget that someone had to throw him the ball in the first place. The offensive line had to throw their bodies in front of a crazed defense to give the QB time to throw. Other receivers had to run routes to draw the safeties away. The running back had to pick up the blitzing linebacker. Nah, the receiver threw and caught the ball on his own. He DESERVES that solo celebration.

  29. What kind of dance do you do when you play a team at least twice a year but haven’t beaten them since Nov. 2, 2014?

  30. I agree AB has to tone it down with the celebrations. But let’s get our facts straight, it was Leveon Bell who was flagged cause he joined in on the celebration. The NFL needs to make it a delay of game unless it’s vulgar or taunting.

  31. “We had a setback in that area, but I don’t think it requires additional discussion,” Tomlin said.

    ===================================

“I kicked his ass all over the locker room,” Tomlin said.

  32. I think it’s safe to say the rules about celebrations are very inconsistently enforced. But they wouldn’t be needed if players were fined appropriately….after all it’s football not dancing with the stars. Make the excessive celebration a $ 100,000 fine for the first and double for each infraction there after. It would stop….

It’s also the time of year when Santa Claus delivers toys to millions of children on Christmas Eve.

    Oh wait.

  34. There have been some suggestions that people aren’t watching football as much because of all the flags on celebrations. But do you know anyone who has said, ‘You know, they’re cracking down on end zone dancing. I think I won’t watch football anymore.” And, conversely, if there are people who tune in primarily to see the dancing, I’d question their fandom.

The game is why people do or don’t watch. Fans flocked to games for a half-century before anyone celebrated in the end zone, and they will watch even if the celebrations are legislated out.

  35. ‘ (Thank goodness they would never objectify women or advertise erectile dysfunction drugs during games.)”

Or, you know, repeatedly cover up domestic violence incidents.

@ Mmack66 isn’t it the time a certain team likes to fool around with air pressure?…..oh wait the Pat’s would never…wait yes they would cheat.

AB needs to take a celebration vacation……

  37. People got problems with AB and Cam when they celebrate only cause they do it too damn often. This is all jealousy and a bunch of hypocritical prudes. Look at the cheerleaders and the camera shots during the games.

  38. “Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said during his appearance on 93.7 The Fan”

When you start a paragraph with that you know the next thing you read is him calling out some player or coach. Should rename the radio show – Ben’s Gossip Hour

  39. Seriously people, get a grip:

    1. How is it that Tomlin gets dragged into this conversation?
    2. What exactly is considered inappropriate when sandwiched in between the barrage of Cialis and Viagra commercials during the breaks.
    3. Why is a “celebration” inappropriate when it contains way less sexual content that is permissible on prime time TV or the soft porn shown on FXX?

Pretty soon a fist pump is going to be called for taunting.

So go sit at the kids table and leave this discussion to the grown ups.

Seriously though, the intro to MNF says it all. For just a moment I thought I was tuned into to WWE MNR.

A man’s game? With shiny gold slippers? So cute! And we wonder why we’re seeing this? The NFL = Kardashians. Famous for being ridiculous.

  41. Enough with the No Fun League! While I do have issues, with sexually suggestive end zone celebrations & the objectification of women.
I don’t have issues with other TD celebrations.
Heck, the players that make a big scene after a sack, or tackle for loss bother me more than TD celebrations.
To those who celebrate after a sack, or tackle for loss….I say, “It’s your job”
Heck, I can just see it if we had that kind of thing in the “REAL WORLD” a cook puts the finishing touches on the customer’s order, and does some sort of “woo hoo….look at me” dance.

  42. AB’s post-TD antics are classless and embarrassing. But he’s not alone. There are too many of these punks that need to grow up.

  43. These guys like Brown are one step up above street gangsters.
Why would they think it’s inappropriate to do something which hurts the team when all they care about is “me,me,me”???

Good for the Steelers players for telling Brown to knock it off, but don’t hold your breath to see if it works.

  44. I’m still waiting for the coach with the guts to pull a guy out of a game and keep him on the bench after he scores and then gets a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for doing one of these stupid celebrations.
But there’s not one head coach in the league who has the guts to do it. I mean, even Tom Coughlin, who was supposed to be as tough as they come, sat back and watched while his star receiver had a complete meltdown on the field.
The only coach in the whole league who’d have the guts to do it is Mike Singletary. But he’s only an advisor for the Rams defense for his buddy Jeff Fisher.

  45. did anyone watch the KC/Denver game as the Chiefs with no timeouts were driving for the win…Kelce gets a first and proceeds to mug it up and wiggle while the team was lining up. He’s 15 yards downfield looking for cameras and has to sprint back. It’s not taking fun out of anything, it’s holding up what is already entertaining. Win,then dance.

AB may like to celebrate, but he is miles from being a gangster. But just because you live in the me me me capital of the US doesn’t make you an expert on who is a gangster. Have you ever watched an interview with AB……until you do you need to shut up!

  47. “Brown has twice previously been penalized for his dances this season, which the buttoned-up NFL has deemed sexually suggestive. (Thank goodness they would never objectify women or advertise erectile dysfunction drugs during games.)”

Perfectly stated. Hypocrisy rules the NFL, and it all starts at the top. And they wonder why their TV ratings are tanking.

And kids should all get participation trophies because everyone is special in their own way. Got it.

  50. Thank you knew8411. I have had the same thoughts for a long time. To the best of my memory, it all started with a DE (all pro) of the Jets. He danced like a pro with every tackle or sack. I said then, and repeat: “It is your job for which you are well paid”. They finger-point, question every call, speak garbage and brag far beyond their talent, all in the name of entertainment. Their entertainment qualities are limited to playing the game, one play at a time. It is sickening to see a DL run the opposite direction from his position after a tackle or sack when all he wants to do is position himself so everyone can see “The Great One”. A lot of fans seem to need this excess, but good football is all the true fan wants, especially from his team.

  51. AB and Little Ben are both giant embarrassments. Let him dance around like a clown. Who cares? The rest of us love mocking this overrated team and its deluded fan base. What a joke.

    ———————————————————

Brown and Ben are embarrassments? Where on earth could you possibly come up with that? The best QB /WR combination in the league. And deluded fan base? Stand down with that, because while there are some fans for Pittsburgh that might be deluded, most of us are more knowledgeable and will forget more than you’ll ever know about the game. Go back to mom’s basement please.

  53. As a Steelers’ fan, I agree . . . AB, while one of the most talented WR’s out there, he is also one of the most selfish. It would be nice if all of these players were more like Heath Miller or James Harrison. Harrison sacks the QB and just goes about his business, the same with Heath Miller. I agree with the poster who says: Act like you’ve been there before.

  54. It begins. First shot in the next contract negotiations.

Next contract talk Brown feels disrespected and this comes up that they don’t have his back. Steelers feel he takes too many penalties negating some of the postivity from a TD.

It’s not there yet but trust me, this will come up as a story on this site in a couple years at most.

  55. Whats wrong with just spiking the ball or handing it to the Ref then celibrating with your teammates.

  56. Brown should model himself after AJ Green – scores and gives the ball to the ref – no me me all class!

  57. As a Steeler fan, I would prefer that the player just hand the ball to the official, and get to the sideline to celebrate with the whole team. But, considering what the NFL fines these players for in celebrations, I don’t understand how the NFL lets Packers do the Lambeau Leap, in which the player actually goes into the stands. Isn’t that also potentially a danger to both players and fans?

  58. I wonder where Ben and Brown had their little heart to heart. Perhaps in the men’s room of some Georgia bar?

  59. Tomlin’s lack of discipline is even more problematic. Second occurrence and Belichick would have a first round pick from Cleveland.

  60. I wish these players would cut out the dancing. They’re on a football field, not in Studio 54. I’m not offended by it personally but the “me me me” crap is getting old fast.
