When the Vikings face the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football, Minnesota’s head coach may not be available for the game.

Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman has announced that coach Mike Zimmer will have emergency eye surgery on Wednesday night, and that his status for Thursday night’s game is uncertain.

Zimmer previously had at least one procedure to repair a torn retina, following the team’s October 31 game at Chicago.

The Vikings have not named an interim coach in the event Zimmer is unable to attend the game; however, Spielman says that the team has a “contingency plan” in place.

Spielman will address the media at 11:00 a.m. ET on Thursday.

  1. Can a team get any more snake-bitten in one season? Geez, I’ve never seen anything like this.

  2. I’ve like Zimmer since he was coaching for the Cowboys. Good coach, seems like a good person, and he’s done a great job this year considering he lost both Teddy and AP.

    Wish him a speedy recovery.

  3. Man that injury bug is really hitting the whole roster from mike Zimmer, down to guys off the street going down, literally top to bottom. Hope you’re gonna be ok coach! Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.

  4. We all hope the surgery is a 100% success coach Zimmer our thoughts are with you!
Now Band together Purple Bloods and Rock that freakin’ crystal house tomorrow for coach and don’t come away with anything less than a win!

  5. Heal up Zimmerman, but man the Cowboys really are this years Panthers. They have easy schedule, and now one of the toughest defenses they will play in regular season will most likely be down the man with the plan for that defense.

  6. Seriously?? Waiting until the nightime before a desperation game? Either he wanted to see the team get in a solid week of practice, or it’s overemotional melodrama at it’s finest. Either way, get well soon coach!

  7. As someone who has had surgery to repair a retina tear, I can tell you that A. It is extremely rare to have 2, especially if you follow the docs orders and rest it enough. B. To be at work 24 hours after this surgery is absolutely ludicrous. I’m a fairly healthy 30 something and I did almost nothing for a week after the surgery. You can easily reverse the surgery if you don’t give it the rest it needs. From what I’m hearing in this article, I’d guess that is exactly what has happened here.

  8. This season raises the “you’ve gotta be kidding me” bar up another notch from the record setting dome collapse season.

    Good luck Zim.

I give Zimmer a lot of credit for keeping this team from totally collapsing. Their was so much optimism to start the season, and rightfully so, but this season has just been torpedoed by injury after injury. His first season he gets blindsided by the AD all year ban, and then has last season ruined by a missed chipshot fg, and then TB goes down a week before the season, Ad in the second game, and then both starting tackles, Kendricks in and out, and now Diggs….I still think he gets this team to a Super Bowl at some point, not sure when, but I have faith in him.

  10. Both Sparano and Shurmur have some head coaching experience. Although, with Shurmur being the OC, you may not want to add extra duties. For one game, I feel like you will miss a head coach less than you would a coordinator.

  11. Who the hell is thumbs downing these comments? C’mon Grinch, it’s Christmas time, you don’t have time to be on a blog comment section.

Good luck and good healing Zimmer!

  12. Sparano will be head coach. Edward’s will call the defense and shurmer with the offense. It’s not that hard to figure out. Vikings gonna win this one for.coach!

  13. he ain’t coachin for a few wks. if that is 2nd retina surgery, he is in recurrent, high risk group, so he will probably have what is called a gas bubble inserted behind the retina to push it up against the eyeball to optimize retinal re-adhesion. and it is important that gravity aids in this process, which means zim probably will have to have his head down virtually 24/7 for 14 days

but the bright side is he won’t be able to watch the terrible vikes offense for awhile

  14. This made me cry! I am praying for you, Coach…for a successful surgery and a quick and complete recovery!

  15. Sorry you rabid, Queen Nation but Zims knows the season is over and is smart enough to get ready for next year. Maybe you should try to do the same?

  16. Nice to see a thread where nobody has made any derogatory or inflammatory comments. Yay, civility!

I had a much less severe eye injury and it was excruciating. Wish him the best, and wish you all happy and safe holidays and a very merry Christmas

  17. I hear the surgery was rescheduled after Zimmer proclaimed that he, “couldn’t see the Vikings beating the Cowboys this week…”

  18. The emotion and the stress of the game is probably not good for the eyes. Hopefully he just concentrates on the healing process. Good Luck!

  19. >Kind of wish Uncle Norv was still here…

Norv left because he didn’t see eye to eye with Zim. Now we know why….

(seriously, just numb, forget the game just get fixed, hopefully surgery went well and he has a 100% recovery)

  20. Good luck coach, and Godspeed.

Sad how less than a third of Vike fans posts actually wished him well or offered good thoughts and prayers.

Because he doesn’t read garbage like this. It’s not a “get well” card being sent to him.

  22. Good luck with the surgery and recovery. Hate to think of the stress that he is under.

On a positive note, the Vikings could turn to any number of the trolls on this site since they seem to have all the answers. Could somebody check the archives for this question: How many teams started a season 5-0 and failed to make the playoffs? There has to be some but it should be a very short list

  23. poor guy needs to quit watching tape of their explosive offense. I bet he needs a tum or two as well..

Go away trolls. This is a serious matter not to be joked about.

Lighten up. Nothing wrong with having a little fun with this. It’s not like he or a family member has cancer.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all as a Viking fan…

    —————–

I see what you did there… too bad Coach Zim can’t…

JK JK that was bad… was it too soon?

Lifelong Vikes fan, but sometimes if you can’t laugh you end up crying.

From 5-0 to likely 6-6 after tonight.
Hard to imagine a more obvious collapse.

  27. Best wishes to Zimmer to get this healed up.

For Vikings fans, man up and quit feeling sorry for yourself. Other teams have more injuries than your team, look it up. Bradford is an upgrade at QB. Truth is, it’s not a very good team. If they get some defensive or special team TDs they might win, otherwise probably not.
